A new measurement of the elastic scattering of 250-GeV/c negative pions by electrons provides form-factor results from 0.0368<q2<0.0940 (GeV/c)2. These measurements determine the mean square pion radius to be 〈rπ2〉=0.439±0.030 fm2 or 〈rπ2〉12=0.663±0.023 fm. Comparisons are made with previous elastic-scattering experiments as well as with results obtained from electroproduction experiments, e+e− annihilation experiments, and phenomenological analyses.

Exposures of the Ne/H 2 filled Big European Bubble Chamber (BEBC) to a dichromatic neutrino (antineutrino) beam produced by 400 GeV protons of the CERN SPS yielded ∼ 3100 events with a negative, and ∼ 1100 with a positive, muon. The neutrino flux is determined from the muon flux in the shielding. Assuming a linear energy dependence of the cross section, the values σ E between 20 and 200 GeV are found to be 0.657 ± 0.012 (stat.) ± 0.027 (syst.) and 0.309 ± 0.009 (stat.) ± 0.013 (syst.) cm 2 (GeV nucleon) −1 , for neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. The scaling variable q 2 E decreases significantly with increasing energy both for neutrinos and antineutrinos.

The process e + e − → π 0 + anything has been measured at c.m. energies of 14 and 34 GeV for π 0 energies between 0.5 and 4 GeV. The ratio of π 0 to π ± production for π momenta between 0.5 and 1.5 GeV/ c is measured to be 2 σ ( π 0 )/ [ σ ( π + ) + σ ( π − )] = 1.3 ± 0.4 (1.2 ± 0.4) at 14 (34) GeV. The scaled cross section ( s / μ )d σ /d x when compared with lower energy (4.9–7.4 GeV) π 0 data indicates a substantial scaling violation.

The small-angle elastic scattering for pp at s=23.5, 30.7, and 52.8 GeV and for p¯p at s=52.8 GeV are measured. The data are normalized on Coulomb scattering. Using the optical theorem and the best estimate of the real part of the forward scattering amplitude, ρ(pp¯)=0.1, we obtain σtot(p¯p)=44.1±2.9 mb for the total cross section and b(p¯p)=13.6±2.2 GeV−2 for the nuclear slope parameter. This supports the dispersion relation prediction that σtot(p¯p) will start to rise above Elab≈200 GeV.

Production of proton-antiproton pairs by two-photon scattering has been observed at the electron-position storage ring PETRA. A total of eight proton-antiproton pairs have been identified using the time-of-flight technique. We have measured a total cross section of 4.5 ± 0.8 nb in the photon-photon c.m. energy range 2.0–2.6 GeV.

Results are presented on the measurement of 200-GeV/c π−p elastic scattering at −t from 0.8 to 11 (GeV/c)2. As −t is increased, dσdt falls by ∼6 decades to a prominent dip at 4 (GeV/c)2, followed by a second maximum and than a slow decrease with increasing −t.

We have studied the properties of hadron production in photon-photon scattering with tagged photons at the e + e − storage ring PETRA. A tail in the p T distribution of particles consistent with p T −4 has been observed. We show that this tail cannot be due to the hadronic part of the photon. Selected events with high p T particles are found to be consistent with a two-jet structure as expected from a point-like coupling of the photons to quarks. The lowest-order cross section predicted for γγ → q q , σ = 3 Σ e q 4 · σ γγ → μμ , is approached from above by the data at large transverse momenta.

We have measured the cross-section ratio σ(νn)σ(νp) for both charged-current and neutral-current interactions at low energy. The experiment used the wide-band neutrino beam at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The detector was the 7-foot bubble chamber filled with a 62% neon-hydrogen mixture. For charged-current events we find that the ratio reaches an asymptotic value of 1.80±0.19 for neutrino energies above 1 GeV. For neutral-current events we measure the ratio to be 1.07±0.24. Both of these results are in agreement with the quark model.

We have measured exclusive ρ0, ω, and φ meson electroproduction at the Cornell Wilson Synchrotron. The final ρ0 data sample included 4637 four-constraint e+p→e+π++π−+p events, with incident energy E=11.5 GeV and electroproduction variables Q2 and W in the region 0.7<Q2<4 GeV2 and 1.9<W<4 GeV. We find that the width of the forward ρ0 diffraction peak increases rapidly as the lifetime of the intermediate hadron states decreases below cΔτ=1 fm and that the peak is wider for longitudinal ρ0 than it is for transverse ρ0. The longitudinal-transverse cross-section ratio Rp=σLσT, obtained assuming s-channel helicity conservation, becomes constant at high Q2. At fixed W the diffractive vector-meson-dominance (VMD) model reproduces the Q2 dependence of our cross section, σ=(σT+εσL), but is is not able to account for the rapid decrease in the cross section with increasing W we observe. We find that σωσρ depends on W but is independent of Q2 for 0.7<Q2<3 GeV2 and 2.2<W<3.7 GeV. However, σω is substantially larger than the diffractive VMD cross section. Our results for σφ are consistent with the Q2 dependence of the diffractive VMD model for 0.8<Q2<4 GeV2 and 2<W<3.7 GeV, but this model again fails to predict the W dependence we observe.
