An enhancement in the (K − π + ) mass distribution at 1871 ± 10 MeV with full width of 285 ± 40 MeV is observed in the charge-exchange reaction K − p → K − π + n at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . The energy dependence of its cross section, the shape of the differential cross section d σ /d t and the decay angular distributions are consistent with a production mechanism by pion exchange. No significant enhancement at the same mass is seen in the non-charge exchange reaction K − p → (K π ) − p. The experimental evidence is reviewed and it is suggested that there may be more than one K ∗ enhancement in the 1700–1900 mass region.

Inspire Record 125737 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35428

We study the reactions π + p → π + p nπ 0 ( n = 2, 3) at 3.5 GeV/ c , with 940 and 143 events, respectively. Complete final states are recorded and measured in a heavy liquid bubble chamber. We find the cross sections: sigma;(π + p → π + p 2π 0 ) = 1300 ± 210 μ b , σ(π + p → π + p 3π 0 ) = 320 ± 70 μ b , below the values predicted by statistical models from charged pion data. The mass spectra are given and channel separations are performed using Van Hove variables. Our results are in agreement with charged pion experiments. We present a description of the 3 π 0 system, with 61 events. Under certain hypotheses a spin-parity analysis favours 0 − at low mass and 1 − at high mass.

Pion production on a CD2 target has been measured using the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer SPES I. Differential cross sections for the reaction D(p, π+)T have been determed at Tp=410, 605, and 809 MeV. The present data, together with previous results establish a complete angular distribution of the reaction D(p, π+)T at ∼ 600 MeV and the energy dependence of the differential cross section for this reaction at several constant momentum transfers.

Inspire Record 118843 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24494

Evidence is presented for production of Ξ* resonances, decaying into Ξπ, Ξ(1530)π, ΛK¯, and ΣK¯, in K−p interactions at 2.87 Gev/c. The data represent final combined results from a 30-events/μb hydrogen exposure and an 18-events/μb exposure in deuterium designed to study Ξ* production in the mass interval 1.46-2.07 GeV/c2. In addition to Ξ(1820) and Ξ(1940), signals have been observed at masses of 1630 MeV/c2 and 1860 MeV/c2 decaying into Ξ−π+ and YK¯, respectively. Reaction cross sections have been measured for all final states containing two visible signs of strangeness, and for the final states ΛK−K+ and Σ0K−K+.

Using the polarized-beam facility at Argonne National Laboratory and a polarized proton target, simultaneous measurements of the spin parameter P and the spin correlation term CNN were made. Data were obtained and analyzed at beam momenta of 2, 3, 4, and 6 GeV/c in the momentum-transfer-squared interval 0.1≤|t|≤2.8 (GeV/c)2. A preliminary phase-shift analysis of the 2- and 3-GeV/c data is discussed and a comparison with predictions of a particular Regge-pole model at all four energies is made.

Photoproduction of rho0 and rho- Mesons at 3-GeV

Bapu, P. ; Endorf, R. ; Meadows, B. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 15 (1977) 26, 1977.
Inspire Record 123802 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24621

The photoproduction of ρ0 and ρ− mesons has been studied at 3 GeV in the reactions γd→dπ±π−, γd→psnπ+π−, and γd→pspπ−π0. For ρ0 and ρ− production in these reactions we present the total and differential cross sections, the decay angular distributions, and the spin density matrix elements. The photoproduction of the ρ0 is found to be consistent with s-channel helicity conservation and is dominated by natural-parity exchange. The ρ− meson production has approximately equal natural- and unnatural-parity-exchange contributions. The unnatural-parity-exchange contribution is consistent with one-pion exchange and is used to estimate the value of Γρπγ.

Strange Particle Production in Three and Four-Body Final States of 16-GeV/c pi+- p Reactions

The AACHEN-BERLIN-BONN-CERN-CRACOW collaboration Bosetti, P. ; Grassler, H. ; Otter, G. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 128 (1977) 205-218, 1977.
Inspire Record 126061 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35256

Three- and four-body final states with strange particles are studied in π + p and π − p interactions at 16 GeV/ c . We present cross sections and investigate their energy dependence. Production mechanism, resonance production and quantum number transfer are discussed. Strong Y ∗ (1385) production is found in the reaction π + p → Λ K + π + , while the corresponding π − p reaction is dominated by production of K ∗ (890). In the NK K π channels, the K and K are produced mainly at the same vertex, i.e. non-strangeness exchange ΔS = 0 is dominant (about 75% of the cases), whereas in the Λ K ππ channels, the Λ and K are more frequently produced at opposite vertices, i.e. | ΔS | = 1 exchange is important (about 60% of the cases). Results on the polarization of the lambdas produced in the π + p reactions are given.

Study of the Reactions pi+ p --> pi0 Delta++ (1236), eta Delta++ (1236) and eta-prime Delta++ (1236) at 16-GeV/c

Nucl.Phys.B 131 (1977) 189-208, 1977.
Inspire Record 122492 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35195

The reactions π + p giving π 0 Δ ++ (1236), η (549) Δ ++ (1236) and η ′(958) Δ ++ (1236) are studied at 16 GeV/ c . Cross sections, differential cross sections and Δ ++ (1236) spin density matrix elements are presented. The π 0 Δ ++ (1236) differential cross section d σ d t′ indicates a dip towards t ′ = 0 and has a minimum at t ′ ≅ 0.6 GeV 2 . The Δ ++ (1236) spin density matrix elements are consistent with the predictions of the Stodolsky-Sakurai model, except perhaps near the forward direction. For ηΔ ++ (1236), the differential cross section d σ d t′ turns over in the forward direction and presents no further structure. SU(3) sum rules are tested and found to be approximately satisfied. The data agree with factorization of ϱ exchange. The effective A 2 trajectory is calculated and found to be consistent with that reported from the reaction π − p → η n.

Spin-Parity Analysis of the Diffractively Produced Low Mass n pi System in the Reaction pi+- p --> pi+- (n pi)+ at 16-GeV/c

The Aachen-Berlin-Bonn-CERN collaboration Otter, G. ; Rudolph, G. ; Wieczorek, H. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 130 (1977) 349, 1977.
Inspire Record 119192 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35244

The dominant partial waves of the diffractively produced N π system at low Nπ masses (⩽ 1.4 GeV) are determined in the reactions π ± p → π (N π ) at 16 GeV/ c . A satisfactory description of our data can only be obtained by strong contributions of both a 1 2 − S-wave and a 3 2 + P-wave, violating the Gribov-Morrison rule. Spin and parity of the diffractively produced states are found from the interference between diffraction and Δ (1236) production. The interference term is obtained by an isospin analysis.

Particle Multiplicities in K- p Interactions at 32-GeV/c

The French-Soviet & CERN-Soviet collaborations Cochet, C. ; Barloutaud, R. ; Berard, A. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 124 (1977) 61-80, 1977.
Inspire Record 118795 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35364

The inclusive cross section and the average multiplicity are evaluated for most of the charged ( π ± , p, K ± ) and neutral (γ, π 0 , K 0 , K 0 , Λ, Λ , n ) particles produced in 32 GeV/ c K − p interactions; corresponding results are obtained for each charged topology separately. New results are given for the total charged multiplicity cross sections. The average longitudinal momentum of neutrals is found to be roughly equal to that of charged particles. The π + and π − multiplicity distributions are reconstructed and compared to the π 0 and to the total charged multiplicity distributions.
