Zero-degree differential cross-sections and DNN values for the O-17, O-18 (,) F-17, F-18 reactions at E(p) = 118 MeV

We present zero-degree differential cross sections and transverse spin-transfer coefficients DNN(0°) for the 17,18O(p→,n→)17,18F reactions at Ep=118 MeV. For the transition to the 17F(g.s.) to which several multipoles contribute, the measured DNN(0°)=−0.13±0.05 is used to separate the Fermi and Gamow-Teller contributions at 0°. The empirical Gamow-Teller strengths and the Fermi strengths are employed to estimate the solar neutrino absorption cross section in 17O and 18O.

Measurement of gamma p --> K0 Sigma+ at photon energies up to 1.55-GeV.

The reaction γp → K 0 Σ + has been measured with the SAPHIR detector at the electron stretcher ring ELSA. The total cross section rises up to a peak value of 1.1 μ b at a photon energy of 1.4 GeV. The differential cross sections dσ/dΩ are consistent with being flat throughout the measured energy range. The first measurement of the Σ + polarization in photon induced reactions was obtained.

Inclusive measurements of the pion differential cross sections and analyzing powers have been carried out for the pp→pnπ+ reaction at 420 and 500 MeV using the SASP spectrometer at TRIUMF. Pion energies from the onset of the continuum down to about 25 MeV were covered in the angular range from 23° to 100° (lab). Total cross sections of 0.750±0.075 mb and 2.77±0.28 mb were determined for the pp→pnπ+ reaction at 420 and 500 MeV, respectively. The experimental results are presented and discussed within the framework of a partial wave analysis. Theoretical predictions from a covariant one-boson-exchange model that includes final state interactions, provide a good description of the data. The pion spectra, in the region corresponding to low relative np energies, are also well described by a final state interaction model that uses the pp→dπ+ cross sections as input. Details of the determination of the background corrections and detector efficiencies will be discussed.

Compton scattering from the free and bound proton at backward angles above pi threshold.

Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the free proton at Θ γ ′ lab =130.7° in the energy region from 200 MeV to 410 MeV and for quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton bound in the deuteron at Θ γ ′ lab =148.8° in the energy region from 200 MeV to 290 MeV have been measured. The free proton data are in agreement with dispersion-theory predictions based on standard parameters. The difference of the proton polarizabilities has been extracted from the quasi-free data. Our result, α ̄ − β ̄ =[9.1±1.7( stat+syst )±1.2( mod )]×10 −4 fm 3 , is in reasonable agreement with the world average of the free proton data if the backward spin polarizability γ π is taken to be −37.6×10 −4 fm 4 as predicted by dispersion theory in agreement with many theoretical calculations. This implies that quasi-free Compton scattering may also be used to determine the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the neutron. No indication has been found of a recently suggested new contribution to γ π .

Measurement of the e+ e- --> gamma gamma (gamma) cross section at the LEP energies.

The total and the differential cross-sections for the reaction e + e − → γγ ( γ ) have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 183 GeV for an integrated luminosity of 78.19 pb −1 . The results agree with the QED predictions. The lower limits (obtained including previously published results at the Z 0 energies) on the QED cutoff parameters are Λ + >253 GeV and Λ − >225 GeV and the lower bound on the mass of an excited electron with an effective coupling constant λ γ =1 is 231 GeV/ c 2 . All the limits are at the 95% confidence level.

Enhanced Lambda Lambda production near threshold in the C-12(K-,K+) reaction.

Enhanced production of ΛΛ pairs, above levels predicted by a two-step process model, has been observed near threshold (in the mass range 2.23-2.26 GeV/ c 2 ) in the 12 C( K − , K + ) reaction at 1.66 GeV/ c using a scintillating fiber target. The differential cross section for ΛΛ production in the momentum region 0.95≤ p K + ≤1.3 GeV/ c averaged over the range 2.3 o ≤ θ K + ≤14.7 o was found to be 7.6±1.3 ±0.9 μ b/sr, and that for the enhancement was found to be approximately 3 μ b/sr.

Measurement of gamma p --> K+ Lambda and gamma p --> K+ Sigma0 at photon energies up to 2-GeV .

Associated strangeness production in the reactions γp → K + Λ and γp → K + Σ 0 was measured with the SAPHIR detector at the electron stretcher ring ELSA at Bonn. Data on total and differential cross sections and on hyperon polarizations are presented. The total cross section for Λ production shows a strong threshold enhancement whereas the Σ 0 data have a maximum at about E γ =1.45 GeV. Along with the angular decomposition of the differential cross section into polynomials, this suggests resonance production. However, the angular distributions of both hyperon polarizations vary only slightly with the photon energy. Λ and Σ 0 polarizations show opposite signs and change sign over the angular range.

Measurement of the exclusive D (p, e+ e-) He-3 and D (p, gamma) He-3 reactions at 98 and 176 MeV

A high resolution magnetic pair spectrometer for medium energy photons has been used for studies of the exclusive ( p , e + e − ) and ( p , γ) reactions on deuterium at 98 and 176 MeV. The ( p , e + e − ) cross sections, obtained at 40° and 80°, are compared with the corresponding data for the ( p , γ) reaction measured with the same apparatus. At small virtual photon masses the ( p , e + e − ) cross sections show significant enhancement over what is expected from model calculations, a behaviour which has earlier been observed also for the 11 B( p , e + e − ) 12 C reaction.

Observation of a (Sigma)He-4 bound state in the He-4(K-,pi-) reaction at 600-MeV/c.

We have observed a clear peak below the Σ+-production threshold in the 4He(K−,π−) reaction at 600MeV/c and θKπ=4∘. This is confirmation of the existence of the bound state of Σ4He, which was reported in the 4He(stoppedK−,π−) reaction. As in the case of stopped kaons, no such peak was found in the 4He(K−,π+) spectrum. Quantitatively reliable parameters for this level have been established. The binding energy and the width of the bound state are 4.4±0.3(stat)±1(syst) MeV and 7.0±0.7(stat)−0.0+1.2(syst) MeV, respectively.
