Nucleon structure functions obtained from neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering on iron nuclei at high energies (Ev=30 to 250 GeV) are presented. These results are compared with the results of other lepton-nucleon scattering experiments. The structure functions are used to test the validity of the Gross-Llewellyn-smith sum rule, which measures the number of valence quarks in the nucleons, and to obtain leading and second order QCD fits.

The reaction π−A→Aπ− γ at 40 GeV/c was studied on “Sigma” spectrometer on six different nuclear targets in the region of four-momentum transfer |t|<0.05 (GeV/c)2. A phenomenon of elastic scattering of pions on the nuclear Coulomb field photons was observed, its total and differential cross sections were measured. The cross section of Compton effect on π−-meson was measured.

The forward production of charm states in 350 GeV p-Fe interactions has been studied via the production of prompt single muons with momentum p ≳ 20 GeV/ c . The data indicate equal production of single μ + and μ − events. The observed momentum distributions can be fit with the hypothesis that D mesons are produced with an invariant cross section proportional to (1 − x F ) 5.0±0.8 exp[−(2 ± 0.3) P t ] and do not favor a large diffractive cross section predicted by intrinsic charm models. Extrapolation of the distributions to x F = 0 yields a total D D production cross section of 22.6 ± 2.1(±3.6)ωb/nucleon on the assumption of a linear A dependence and 8% average semileptonic branching ratio of charm states.

Results from a partial wave analysis of theKππ system produced in the hypercharge exchange reaction π−p→(K+π−π0)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c are presented. SignificantQ1 production is observed but no evidence is found forQ2 production thus confirming the results obtained in a previous decay Dalitz plot analysis of the same reaction. The relative phase behaviour of the 1+(Kϱ) partial waves obtained with the present analysis provides additional confirmation of the resonance interpretation of theQ1 enhancement. Information is also obtained about its production properties and the role played by the Λ polarization in the hypercharge exchange reaction. This is compared with the results obtained in the reactionK−p→(π+π−π0)Λ at 4 GeV/c.

We have measured the inclusive production of massive dimuons (7<~Mμμ<~11 GeV/c2) by 200-, 300-, and 400-GeV protons incident on Cu in order to check whether the dimensionless cross section Mμμ3[dσdMμμdy]y=0 is a function of Mμμ2s alone, where s is the square of the c.m. energy. The results support the scaling hypothesis.

We have observed muon pairs with effective masses in the range 7<~Mμμ<~11 GeV/c2 produced by 300- and 400-GeV protons incident on a Cu target at Fermilab. The production cross section per nucleon, dσdMμμ, for 400-GeV incident protons is found to fall from 1 × 10−36 cm2/(GeV/c2) at Mμμ=7.7 GeV/c2 to 2.7 × 10−38 cm2/(GeV/c2) at Mμμ=11.2 GeV/c2. We find that a significant fraction of the observed direct single muons come from high-mass dimuons.

Differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum are presented for the production at ∼90° (in the c.m. system) of π±, K±, p, and p¯ in p-nucleus collisions at incident proton energies of 200 and 300 GeV.
