Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we determine the ratio R(chrg) for the mean charged multiplicity observed in Upsilon(1S)->gggamma events, to the mean charged multiplicity observed in e+e- -> qqbar gamma events. We find R(chrg)=1.04+/-0.02+/-0.05 for jet-jet masses less than 7 GeV.

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell $e~+e~-$ storage ring, CESR, we study the two-photon production of $\Lambda \overline{\Lambda}$, making the first observation of $\gamma \gamma \to \Lambda \overline{\Lambda}$. We present the cross-section for $ \gamma \gamma \to \Lambda \overline{\Lambda}$ as a function of the $\gamma \gamma$ center of mass energy and compare it to that predicted by the quark-diquark model.

Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report evidence of a pair of excited charmed baryons, one decaying into Λc+π+ and the other into Λc+π−. The doubly charged state has a measured mass difference M(Λc+π+)−M(Λc+) of 234.5±1.1±0.8 MeV/c2 and a width of 17.9−3.2+3.8±4.0MeV/c2, and the neutral state has a measured mass difference M(Λc+π−)−M(Λc+) of 232.6±1.0±0.8 MeV/c2 and a width of 13.0−3.0+3.7±4.0MeV/c2. We interpret these data as evidence of the Σc*++ and Σc*0, the spin 32+ excitations of the Σc baryons.

We have observed $23.2 \pm 6.0_{-0.9}^{+1.0}$ purely-leptonic decays of $D_s^+ -> \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ from a sample of muonic one prong decay events detected in the emulsion target of Fermilab experiment E653. In addition, we extract the decay constant $f_{D_s}=194 \pm 35 \pm 20 \pm 14 MeV$.

Using data recorded by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report the first observation of an excited charmed baryon decaying into Ξc0π+. The state has mass difference M(Ξc0π+)−M(Ξc0) of 174.3±0.5±1.0MeV/c2, and a width of <3.1MeV/c2 (90% confidence level limit). Using the CLEO II detector operating at the e + e − Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we present evidence for new decay modes of the Ξ c + into Ξ 0 π + , Ξ 0 π + π 0 , and Ξ 0 π + π − π + . The branching ratios of these decay modes, relative to Ξ c + → Ξ − π + π + , have been measured to be 0.55±0.13±0.09, 2.34±0.57±0.37, and 1.74±0.42±0.27, respectively.
Charge conjugate modes are imlied. P(P=3,C=MAX) is the maximum momentum value and given by P(P=3,C=MAX)**2 = E(P=1)**2 - M(P=3)**2).
This paper describes new measurements from CLEO of the inclusive B→Ds+X branching fraction as well as the B+→Ds(*)+D¯(*)0 and B0→Ds(*)+D(*)− branching fractions. The inclusive branching fraction is B(B→Ds+X)=(12.11±0.39±0.88±1.38)% where the first error is statistical, the second is the systematic error, and the third is the error due to the uncertainty in the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction. The branching fractions for the B→Ds(*)+D¯(*) modes are found to be between 0.9% and 2.4% and are significantly more precise than previous measurements. The sum of the B→Ds(*)+D¯(*) branching fractions is consistent with the results of fits to the inclusive Ds+ momentum spectrum. Factorization is used to arrive at a value for fDs, the Ds+ decay constant. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

We report the observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decays \lcpkk\ and \lcpphi\ using data collected with the CLEO II detector at CESR. The latter mode, observed for the first time with significant statistics, is of interest as a test of color-suppression in charm decays. We have determined the branching ratios for these modes relative to \lcpkpi\ and compared our results with theory.

Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report the first observation of a narrow state decaying into $\Xi_c~+\pi~-$. The state has mass difference $M(\Xi_c~+\pi~-)-M(\Xi_c~+)$ of $178.2\pm0.5\pm1.0$ $\rm{MeV/c~2}$, and a width of $<5.5$ $\rm{MeV/c~2}$ (90\% confidence level limit). The most likely explanation of this new state is that it is the $J=\32$ spin excitation of the $\Xi_c~0$ charmed baryon.

We have observed five new decay modes of the charmed baryon Λc+ using data collected with the CLEO II detector. Four decay modes, Λc+→pK¯0η, Ληπ+, Σ+η, and Σ*+η, are first observations of final states with an η meson, while the fifth mode, Λc+→ΛK¯0K+, requires the creation of an ss¯ quark pair. We measure the branching fractions of these modes relative to Λc+→pK−π+ to be 0.25±0.04±0.04, 0.35±0.05±0.06, 0.11±0.03±0.02, 0.17±0.04±0.03, and 0.12±0.02±0.02, respectively.

Using data collected by the CLEO II detector, we have observed two states decaying to Λc+π+π−. Relative to the Λc+, their mass splittings are measured to be +307.5±0.4±1.0 and +342.2±0.2±0.5MeV/c2, respectively; this represents the first measurement of the less massive state. These two states are consistent with being orbitally excited, isospin zero Λc+ states.

Using the CLEO II detector at CESR, we have observed two charmed states, where the higher mass state decays to D 0 π + and to D ∗0 π + , while the lower mass state decays to D ∗0 π + , but not to D 0 π + . The masses and widths were measured to be 2425±2±2 MeV/c 2 and 26 −7−4 +8+4 MeV/c 2 for the lower mass state, and 2463±3±3 MeV/c 2 and 27 −8−5 +11+5 MeV/c 2 for the higher mass state. Properties of these states, including their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments have been studied. The results of this analysis support the identification of these states as the charged L = 1 D 1 (2420) + and D 2 ∗ (2460) + , respectively. The isospin mass splittings between these states and their neutral partners have also been measured. This is the first full reconstruction of any decay mode of the D 1 (2420) + and the first observation of the decay of D 2 ∗ (2460) + to D ∗0 π + .

A measurement of the cross section for the combined two-photon production of charged pion and kaon pairs is performed using 1.2~$\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the CLEO~II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The cross section is measured at invariant masses of the two-photon system between 1.5 and 5.0 GeV/$c^2$, and at scattering angles more than $53^\circ$ away from the $\gamma\gamma$ collision axis in the $\gamma\gamma$ center-of-mass frame. The large background of leptonic events is suppressed by utilizing the CsI calorimeter in conjunction with the muon chamber system. The reported cross section is compared with leading order QCD models as well as previous experiments. In particular, although the functional dependence of the measured cross section disagrees with leading order QCD at small values of the two-photon invariant mass, the data show a transition to perturbative behavior at an invariant mass of approximately 2.5 GeV/$c^2$. hardcopies with figures can be obtained by writing to to: Pam Morehouse preprint secretary Newman Lab Cornell University Ithaca, NY 14853 or by sending mail to: preprints@lns62.lns.cornell.edu

A search for charm production in the coherent diffractive dissociation reaction pSi→XSi was carried out for the modes D 0 → K − π + , D 0 → K − π + π + π − , and D + → K − π + π + . The results are interpreted as an upper limit of 0.2% on the amount of intrinsic charm in the proton.

The CLEO II detector is used to search for the production of χc2 states in two-photon interactions. We use the signature χc2→γJ/ψ→γl+l− with l=e,μ. Using 1.49 fb−1 of data taken with beam energies near 5.29 GeV, the two-photon width of the χc2 is determined to be Γ(χc2→γγ)=1.08±0.30(stat)±0.26(syst) keV, in agreement with predictions from perturbative QCD.
Results below were obtained usign J/psi from-factors in the two photon propogators, and assumes that only transversely polarized photons are significant inthe production of the CHI/C2(1P) state.

A measurement of the cross section for γγ→pp¯ is performed at two-photon center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.25 GeV. These results are obtained using e+e−→e+e−pp¯ events selected from 1.31 fb−1 of data taken with the CLEO II detector. The measured cross section is in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and is in excellent agreement with recent calculations based on a diquark model. However, leading order QCD calculations performed using the Brodsky-Lepage formalism are well below the measured cross section.

We have measured the B0B¯0 mixing probability, χd, using a sample of 965 000 BB¯ pairs from Υ(4S) decays. Counting dilepton events, we find χd=0.157±0.016±0.018−0.021+0.028. Using tagged B0 events, we find χd=0.149±0.023±0.019±0.010. The first (second) error is statistical (systematic). The third error reflects a ±15% uncertainty in the assumption, made in both cases, that charged and neutral B pairs contribute equally to dilepton events. We also obtain a limit on the CP impurity in the Bd0 system, ‖Re(εB0)‖<0.045 at 90% C.L.

We report on the production characteristics and total cross section for 9 beauty hadron pairs produced by a 600 GeV/ c π − beam, the first such information in this energy region. We present total and differential cross sections for charm mesons produced in 600 GeV/ c π - emulsion interactions. Fits to d 2 σ / dx F dp T 2 ∞ (1−| x F |) n exp (- bp T 2 ) for 676 electronically reconstructed D mesons with x F >0 give n =4.25±0.24 ( stat .)±0.23 ( syst .) and b =0.76±0.03±0.03 ( GeV / c ) -2 . The total inclusive D + and D 0 cross sections are σ ( π - N → D ± ; x F >0) = 8.66±0.46±1.96 μb nucleon and σ(π - N→D 0 D 0 ; x F >0)=22.05±1.37±4.82μb nucleonk, where a linear dependence on the mean atomic weight of the target is assumed. These results are compared to next-to-leading order QCD predictions.

Analyzing powers have been measured for the quasi-elastic ( p → , 2p ) scattering in carbon and copper using a KEK 3.5 GeV polarized proton beam. The present result shows relatively larger analyzing powers compared with the ones obtained for carbon in the energy region 0.52–2.8 GeV at Saclay (Saturne). The t -dependence for C and Cu ( p → , 2p ) is compared with a calculation based on the relativistic impulse approximation and is reproduced well.

High statistics data of the ηππ system in π − p → ηπ + π − n were obtained. A partial wave analysis was performed in the mass region between 1.37 and 1.85 GeV. Resonant structures were observed in the IJ PC = 11 −− wave around 1.6 GeV and in 13 −− around 1.7 GeV. The structure in 11 −− was fitted with a single Breit-Wigner and also fitted with two Breit-Wigner's. The result suggests the possible existence of two vector resonances around 1.6 GeV. The polarized target asymmetry for γ n→ π − p was measured over the second resonance region from 0.55 to 0.9 GeV at pion c.m. angles between 60° and 120°. The polarized target asymmetry in the reaction γ p → π 0 p has been measured at c.m. angles of 30°, 80°, 105° and 120° for incident photon energies below 1 GeV. Two decay photons from π 0 were detected in coincidence at 30°, and at the other angles recoil protons and single photons from π 0 were detected. The polarized target asymmetry for the process γ p → π + n has been measured for incident photon energies below 1.02 GeV over a range of c.m. angles from 40° to 160°. π + mesons from a polarized butanol target were detected by a magnetic spectrometer. The results are compared with predictions given by existing analyses. A tentative interpretation of the data is performed, and a larger contribution of S-wave resonances is suggested. The photocouplings of dominant resonances were hardly changed by the inclusion of new data and they seem to be almost uniquely determined.

The polarized target asymmetry for γ + p → π + + n was measured at c.m. angles around 130° for the energy range between 0.3 and 1.0 GeV. A magnetic spectrometer system was used to detect π + mesons from the polarized butanol target. The data show two prominent positive peaks at 0.4 and 0.8 GeV and a deep minimum at 0.6 GeV. The asymmetry of the cross section for π + photoproduction from a polarized butanol target has been measured at a c.m. angle 90° and photon energies between 300 and 900 MeV by a single-arm spectrometer detecting positive pions. Our results indicate that the asymmetry has clear positive peaks at photon energies 400 and 700 MeV with a deep valley at about 600 MeV. The general feature of the results is well reproduced by the phenomenological analyses made by Walker and ourselves; however, the best fit to the polarized target asymmetry data seems to give a somewhat different set of parameters from that given by Walker.
