The total cross section for electron-positron annihilation into three or more hadrons has been measured for centre of mass energies between 1.4 and 2.0 GeV. The data were obtained at ADONE by the BB̄ experiment.
NOTE THAT THIS MEASUREMENT OF R EXCLUDES TWO-BODY FINAL STATE EVENTS. RADIATIVE CORRECTIONS WERE APPLIED.
A simple, large-solid-angle apparatus, specially suited for the measurement of backward elastic scattering of medium-energy pions on protons and deuterons, is described. The method of analysis which reduces background and determines elastic events from a data sample of 185 MeV negative pions incident on a D 2 O target is discussed. Results for 141 MeV π + p and 185 MeV π − p backward cross-sections are also presented and compared with cross-sections calculated from known phase shifts.

Three narrow resonances have been observed in e+e− annihilation into hadrons at total energies between 9.4 and 10.4 GeV. Measurements of mass spacing and ratios of lepton pair widths support the interpretation of these "ϒ" states as the lowest triplet-S levels of the bb¯ quark-antiquark system.

Inclusive ϱ 0 and φ production is investigated in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . Total and semi-inclusive ϱ 0 and φ cross sections, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions, including 〈 P T versus x dependence are presented. No evidence for a sea-gull effect is observed. Comparison with quark models strongly suggests the possibility that a large fraction of the ϱ 0 and vector mesons are produced as fragmentation products of the incident particles. Study of uncorrelated π + π − pairs in the ϱ 0 mass range provides possible indirect evidence for the existence of diquarks in the proton.

Total and semi-inclusive cross sections, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions and spin density matrix elements of theK*+(892) andK*0(892) produced in the inclusive reactionsK+p→K*+(892)+X andK+p→K*0(892)+X at 32 GeV/c are studied in detail. The inclusive spectra of theK*(892) and their decay products are compared with pion and neutral kaon production. TheK*+(892) andK*+(892) are dominantly produced by kaon fragmentation processes. The dependence of average transverse momentum <pT> vs.x for resonances has been investigated for the first time.

To complete data on resonance electroproduction we constructed an electron spectrometer with large angular and momentum acceptance. As a first result inclusive cross sections for an invariant hadronic mass 1.2<W<1.7 GeV and a four momentum transfer squared 0.5<Q2<1.5 (GeV/c)2 and for values of the polarization parameter 0.1<ɛ<0.25 are presented. Combining our results with the SLAC 4°-data we obtain σL/σT in the specified kinematical range.

New results on the inclusive and semi-inclusive production of π + mesons and protons in the whole phase space are given for about 2.2 · 10 4 inelastic p p interactions at 22.4 GeV/ c . A method of statistical separation for spectra of particles of the same charge which are produced in CP -symmetrical reactions is discussed in detail. Experimental data are compared with quark-parton model predictions.

Lambda production is studied in K − p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The total Λ cross section is 2.31±0.03 mb . Using the measured Λγ combinations we find that (31±4)% of all Λ's are produced via the Σ 0 → Λγ decay. About 60% of the Λ's are associated with either a N N or K K pair; about 40% of the Λ's are produced through the hypercharge annihiltion reaction K − p→ Λ + π 'a. The two-peak structure of the invariant x distribution can be related to fragmentation processes. The Λ is found to be unpolarized in the target fragmentation region, whereas a transverse polarization is observed for forward produced Λ's. As a function of p ⊥, a polarization effect is measured at medium p ⊥.

The proton polarization in deuteron photodisintegration has been measured at photon energies between 400 and 650 MeV at c.m. angles between 45° and 135°. To explain the polarization and differential cross-section data consistently, we have introduced dibaryon resonances and performed a partial-wave analysis at photon energies between 350 and 700 MeV. It has been shown that the existence of at least two dibaryon resonances is required in this energy range: one at ∼2380MeV with I ( J P ) = 0(3 + ) or 0(1 + ), and the other at ∼2260 MeV with I ( J P ) = 1(3 − ) or 1(2 − ).
