The total cross section and the differential cross sections of the reactions π + d →π + d (elastic scattering) →π + pn (inelastic scattering) →π 0 pp (charge exchange scattering) →γ pp (radiative absorption) → pp , (non-radiative absorption) have been measured using 85 000 pictures of 290 MeV/ c positive pions in the 38 cm Princeton-Pennsylvania bubble chamber. The elastic, inelastic and charge exchange scattering data are more complete than any previous data in this energy range.

Measurements have been made of the target asymmetry parameter for photoproduction of π 0 mesons from protons, using a butanol polarised target with a 3 He cryostat. Results were obtained at 14 incident photon energies between 0.7 GeV and 1.45 GeV over an angular range ∼40° to 145° c.m. The recent analysis of Barbour and Crawford provides a very good fit to the data.

Measurements have been made of the polarisation parameters Σ , T and P for the process γ p → π + n in the photon energy range 520–2250 MeV at c.m. angles between 30° and 120°. These data were obtained in a double polarisation experiment, using the polarised photon beam from the Daresbury electron synchrotron incident on a polarised proton target. The data are compared with predictions from current theoretical analyses.

Neutron-proton and neutron-deuteron total cross sections have been measured directly at the Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator using time of flight to determine the incident neutron momentum. The results cover the region from 700 to 2900 MeVc with a typical accuracy of 0.8% for each of 26 momentum bins. The data are not consistent with the most precise previous measurements in the same momentum range.

A neutral beam designed to transmit a high flux of Λ0 hyperons with momenta above 50 GeV/c has been built and operated at Fermilab. Inclusive production cross sections per target nucleus have been measured for p+A→Λ0+X, p+A→KS0+X, and p+A→Λ¯0+X with 300-GeV protons incident on solid targets A=berylium, copper, andlead. The region of phase space covered is predominantly projectile fragmentation: 0.2<~x<~1, 0<~p⊥<~2 GeV/c. The A dependence of the inclusive cross sections is analyzed. The cross sections are compared to other work in pp collisions by extrapolating the A dependence to A=1. The results of measurements of Λ0 and Λ¯0 polarization from the beryllium target are presented.

We present direct measurements of the total cross section for neutrons on protons and deuterons in the momentum range 0.7 to 3.6 GeVc. Using these and other nucleon-nucleon total cross sections, we evaluate total cross sections in the pure isospin states.

The missing-mass technique has been used to study the spectra of neutral mesons produced by 2- and 3-Gev protons in the reaction p+d→He3+x0. Cross sections (dσdΩc.m.) of about 10−34 cm2/sr were observed for the π, η, and ω for 3-GeV protons. A peak with a much smaller cross section was observed at a mass of 956 MeV. We have tentatively identified this peak as the η′. Cross sections for the π and η were nearly a factor of 10 larger at 2 GeV than at 3 GeV. Deviations from simple phase space were observed near the two-pion threshold in both 2-GeV and 3-GeV data. Details of the experimental method and of the results are presented.
