The reaction $\gamma p \rightarrow \omega p$ $(\omega \rightarrow \pi~+\pi~-\pi~0$ and $\pi~0\rightarrow\gamma\gamma)$ has been studied in $ep$ interactions using the \mbox{ZEUS} detector at photon-proton centre-of-mass energies between $70$ and $90\uni{GeV}$ and $|t| < 0.6\uni{GeV}~2$, where $t$ is the squared four momentum transferred at the proton vertex. The elastic \ome photoproduction cross section has been measured to be $\sigma_{\gamma p\rightarrow \omega p} = 1.21\pm 0.12\pm 0.23 \mu\mbox{b}$. The differential cross section $d\sigma_{\gamma p\rightarrow \omega p} /d|t|$ has an exponential shape $\mbox{e}~{-b |t|}$ with a slope $b = 10.0\pm 1.2\pm 1.3\uni{GeV}~{-2}$. The angular distributions of the decay pions are consistent with {\it s}-channel helicity conservation. When compared to low energy data, the features of $\omega$ photoproduction as measured at HERA energies are in agreement with those of a soft diffractive process. Previous measurements of the $\rho~0$ and $\phi$ photoproduction cross sections at HERA show a similar behaviour.

The analyzing power A N of proton-proton, proton-hydrocarbon, and antiproton-hydrocarbon, scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using thhe 185 GeV/ c Fermilab polarized-proton and -antiproton beams. The paper presents results on measuring the polarization in the reaction π − p→ π 0 n at 40 GeV/ c in the 4-momentum transfer range 0<| t |⩽2 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results based on the statistics of about 2.2 million recorded events made it possible to observe a noticeable value and complex structure in the polarization behaviour up to | t |⩽2 (GeV/ c ) 2 .

The polarization parameter in the reactions π−p→ηn and π−p→η′n at 40 GeV/c with −t ranging from 0 to 2.6 (GeV/c)2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2, respectively, was measured in experiments using a propanediol polarized target. Only gamma particles from the neutral meson decay were detected. The polarization parameter of the first reaction turns out to be negative in a widet interval (0.05<−t<1.6 (GeV/c)2) and probably changes its sign at larger values oft. The average value of the polarization parameter of the second reaction is equal to −17±8)% in the region 0.05<−t<0.5 (GeV/c)2.

The analyzing power (spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetry) has been observed for the first time in the nuclear Coulomb coherent production process, the ‘‘Primakoff process,’’ with the use of the newly constructed 185-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. We have observed a large asymmetry of this process in the regions of ‖t’‖<0.001 (GeV/c)2 and 1.36<M(π0p)<1.52 GeV/c2, where the Coulomb process is predominant. The measured asymmetry is consistent with the analyzing power of the existing low-energy γ+p→π0+p data.
