Large Angle Proton Proton Elastic Scattering at 201-{GeV}/$c$ and 400-{GeV}/$c$

Proton-proton elastic scattering using 201- and 400-GeV/c extracted beams at Fermilab has been measured in the region 4.9<−t<14.4 GeV2. Contrary to predictions of diffraction models, there is no sign of a second dip or "break," and the slope A in the fit exp(At) is smaller than predicted. It drops from 1.5 to 0.8 GeV−2 over our t range. The shape of the t distribution can be fitted by the power law dσdt∝t−8.4 which is close to a quantum-chromodynamics (QCD) prediction of t−8. At fixed t the 201-GeV/c cross sections are about 2.3 times those at 400 GeV/c which is compatible with the QCD and constituent-interchange-model prediction that dσdt∝s−10 at fixed ts.

Measurements have been made of the polarised target asymmetry parameter T for eta photoproduction from protons at a photon energy of 4 GeV and t -values of −0.4, −0.6 and −0.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results are compared with predictions for this quantity.

Production of S = -2 and -3 Baryon States in 6.5-{GeV}/$c K^- P$ Interactions

We present results from a high statistics (46 events/μ;b) experiment on K − p interactions in the Argonne 12 foot bubble chamber. In particular we make a systematic search for Ξ ∗ resonances. We confirm recent evidence of a Ξ(2370), and see a number of other well established states. We also give cross sections for various exclusive and inclusive reactions, including those in which θ − are produced.

Ξ− interactions in hydrogen and deuterium are studied close to the forward direction using the CERN charged hyperon beam. The inclusive production of ∑*−(1385),Ξ−,Ξ*0(1530),Ξ*−(1700),Ξ*−(1830), and Ω− is observed, as well as an enhancement in theΞ−π+ channel at 1940 MeV/c2. The momentum distributions and the production cross sections are measured for ∑*−(1385),Ξ−,Ξ*0(1530), and Ω−.

Measurement of the Proton Structure Function F(2) in Muon - Hydrogen Interactions at 120-GeV and 280-GeV

The proton structure function F 2 has been measured in the range 2.5 ⪕ Q 2 ⪕ 170 GeV 2 and 0.03 ⪕ x ⪕ 0.65 . Scaling violation is clearly seen in the data. Results of fits to leading-order QCD are presented, together with values of the scale-breaking parameter λ.

A measurement of the nucleon structure function F 2 on iron is presented. The data cover a kinematic range of 3.25 ⪕ Q 2 ⪕ 200 GeV 2 and 0.05 ⪕ x ⪕ 0.65 . The data clearly show scaling violation. Fits in leading-order QCD have been made and values for the scale breaking parameter λ are given.

Large transverse energy cross sections of 300 GeV/ c pions and protons on hydrogen have been measured with a segmented calorimeter covering the central rapidity region −0.88 < y < 0.67 and 2 π in azimuth. The selected events show large multiplicities and no jet-like event structure. Processes more complicated than the scattering of two constituents appear to dominate these inelastic collisions.

The absolute cross section for the reaction C(α, X)C11 has been measured from 0.64 to 2.8 GeV using a counter telescope to determine the alpha flux and a plastic scintillator target to determine the C11 activity. The results are 55.6±2.2 mb (0.64 GeV), 49.2±1.9 mb (1.2 GeV), 44.1±1.8 mb (2.0 GeV), and 42.0±1.7 mb (2.8 GeV). NUCLEAR REACTIONS C(α, X)C11, E=0.64, 1.2, 2.0, 2.8 GeV; measured absolute cross section.
