A preliminary study of single pion production with no annihilation and multiple pion annihilation in antiproton-proton interactions at 7 GeV/c indicates that the single pion production cross-section is 5.6±1.2mb, and the multipion annihilation cross-section is ∼24mb. Although there is strong evidence for resonance production in the one pion production channels, these states do not appear to be dominated by any single resonance. Resonance production in the annihilation channels is small compared to rates observed at lower energies.

The proton-antiproton total cross section was measured at the center-of-mass energy of s = 541 GeV at the S p pS at CERN using a luminosity dependent method. The result σ tot =63.0±2.1 mb is in agreement with the luminosity independent measurement performed earlier by the UA4 Collaboration.

Antiproton-proton elastic scattering was measured at c.m.s. energies √s =546 and 1800 GeV in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.025<-t<0.29 GeV2. The data are well described by the exponential form ebt with a slope b=15.28±0.58 (16.98±0.25) GeV−2 at √s =546 (1800) GeV. The elastic scattering cross sections are, respectively, σel=12.87±0.30 and 19.70±0.85 mb.

The differential cross section for antiproton-proton elastic scattering has been measured for the beam momenta between 180 and 600 MeV/c. The real-to-imaginary ratio of the forward elastic scattering amplitude is derived from the Coulomb-nuclear interference. The ratio is found to be close to zero between 180 and 500 MeV/c with a minimum ofρ=−0.14 at 260 MeV/c. This result is contrary to model predictions. The phase shifts for thes-,p- andd-waves are extracted. The partial wave compositions of the elastic and inelastic cross sections have been determined. A large contribution of thep-wave is identified in the antiproton-proton interactions at small momenta.

Results are presented on the charge exchange reaction\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations from bubble chamber exposures to antiproton beam of momenta 700 and 760 MeV/c. The differential cross section of\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) shows a forward spike followed by a clear dip bump structure. Total annihilation cross section of\(\bar np\) for average\(\bar n\) momentum of 700 MeV/c has been evaluated to be 55.4±2.2 mb. The multiplicity, Feynmanx andpT2 distributions for inclusive charged pions in\(\bar pp\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be similar. The emission of charged pions from\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be consistent with thermodynamic models with temperature ∼110 MeV.

We have measured the differential cross section for pp and p̄p elastic scattering at √ s = 31, 53 and 62 GeV in the interval 0.05 < | t | < 0.85 GeV 2 at the CERN ISR using the Split Field Magnet detector. At 53 and 62 GeV, for 0.17 < | t | < 0.85 GeV 2 both pp and p̄p data show simple exponential behaviour in t ; at √ s = 31 GeV the data for 0.05 < | t | < 0.85 GeV 2 are consistent with a change in slope near | t | = 0.15 GeV 2 .
ERRORS CONTAIN BOTH STATISTICAL AND T-DEPENDENT SYSYEMATIC ERRORS.

Proton-antiproton elastic scattering at CM energy 540 GeV has been studied in the t -range 0.04 < − t < 0.45 GeV 2 . The data are well fitted by the form exp ( bt ) with b = 17.1 ± 1.0 GeV −2 for | t | = 0.04 − 0.18 GeV su 2 and b = 13.7 ± 0.2 ± 0.2 GeV −2 for | t | = 0.21−0.45 GeV 2 . A luminosity measurement combined with the optical theorem gives σ tot = 67.6 ± 5.9 ± 2.7 mb and σ e1 / σ tot = 0.209 ± 0.018 ± 0.008.

We measured the differential cross section for p̄p and pp elastic scattering in the momentum-transfer range 0.01 <| t | < 1.0 GeV 2 at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings with center-of-mass energy s = 52.8 GeV . Fitting the differential cross section with an exponential [ A exp ( bt )], we found b p p = 13.92 ± 0.59 GeV −2 for | t | < 0.05 GeV 2 , whilst for | t | > 0.09 GeV 2 , b p p = 10.68 ± 0.26 GeV −2 . Using the optical theorem, we obtained for the total cross section σ tot ( p p)= 44.86 ± 0.78 mb and, by integrating the differential cross section, we obtained for the total elastic cross section σ el ( p p) = 7.89 ± 0.28 mb . Calculations of σ tot combining elastic-rate and total-rate measurements are also given. All of these measurements were also performed for pp scattering at the same energy, and the results for both reactions are compared.
