HEPData Search

The result of a search for magnetic charged particles at 70 GeV IPHE proton synchrotron is presented. Using the ferromagnetic trap method the upper limit of the magnetic monopole production cross-section in proton-nucleon collisions was found to be α (95%) ⩾ × 10 −43 cm 2 .

Invariant mass spectrum of μ + μ − pairs produced by 70 GeV/ c protons in Be target are presented. Distinct enhancements in the mass regions of ϱ, ω mesons, φ meson and J/ψ particle are observed. For J/ψ production x and p ⊥ 2 distributions are given. The total cross section for the reaction p + Be → ( J ψ → μ + μ − ) + … is equal to 9.5 ± 2.5 nb/nucleus .

The inclusive reaction pp → Λ + X ++ at 19 GeV/ c beam momentum has been analyzed in terms of the triple-Regge formalism. A good description of the structure function is achieved for events with | t | < 4 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The effective trajectory obtained from fits to the M 2 / s distribution in different t bins is α R ( t ) = −(0.38 ± 0.11) + (1.15 ± 0.07) t , which holds up to a | t | value of 4 (GeV/ c ) 2 . This is consistent with the K trajectory rather than the K ∗ trajectory which has been reported from other experiments.

We present data on inclusive negative-hadron production from charged-current antineutrino interactions in a 21% Ne-H mixture. Inclusive single-particle distributions are presented and are shown to be insensitive to the momentum transferred to the hadron vertex. Comparisons made to inclusive data from π−p and π−n interactions indicate a close similarity between the hadrons resulting from π-nucleon and ν¯-nucleus interactions. The general features of the ν¯-nucleus data are found to be similar to those seen in ν¯p interactions. This last observation implies that ν¯p and ν¯n interactions are similar and that nuclear effects are small.

Spectra of p, d, and t from relativistic nuclear collisions

Inclusive energy spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons were measured with a telescope of silicon and germanium detectors with a detection range for proton energies up to 200 MeV. Fifteen sets of data were taken using projectiles ranging from protons to Ar40 on targets from Al27 to U238 at bombarding energies from 240 MeV/nucleon to 2.1 GeV/nucleon. Particular attention was paid to the absolute normalization of the cross sections. For three previously reported reactions, He fragment cross sections have been corrected and are presented. To facilitate a comparison with theory the sum of nucleonic charges emitted as protons plus composite particles was estimated and is presented as a function of fragment energy per nucleon in the interval from 15 to 200 MeV/nucleon. For low-energy fragments at forward angles the protons account for only 25% of the nucleonic charges. The equal mass Ar40 plus Ca systems were examined in the center of mass. Here at 0.4 GeV/nucleon Ar40 plus Ca the proton spectra appear to be nearly isotropic in the center of mass over the region measured. Comparisons of some data with firestreak, cascade, and fluid dynamics models indicate a failure of the first and a fair agreement with the latter two. In addition, associated fast charged particle multiplicities (where the particles had energies larger than 25 MeV/nucleon) and azimuthal correlations were measured with an 80 counter array of plastic scintillators. It was found that the associated multiplicities were a smooth function of the total kinetic energy of the projectile. This paper presents the results of an experiment in which the polarization parameter P in π − p elastic scattering has been measured at energies of 450, 490, 530, 560 and 600 MeV. The experiment was performed on a pion channel of the LNPI synchrocyclotron using a polarized proton target and wire spark chambers with magnetostrictive read-out. The results have substantially higher precision in comparison with other experiments in this energy range.

We have used the ratio between the production rates of $K^0$'s and $π^−$'s in antineutrino-nucleon interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber to measure the size of the SU (3) symmetry violation in the production of quark-antiquark pairs to be 0.27 ± 0.04. This value is significantly larger than the value obtained from a recent ep experiment. There is no apparent dependence of the $K^0$/$π^−$ ratio with $W^2 , Q ^2 , x_b$ or $p_T^2$ .

The results of a study of strange particle production in charged current $\bar{\nu}_{\mu} N$ interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy $Ne-H_2$ mixture are presented. Production rates and average multiplicities of $K^0$'s and Λ's as functions of W 2 and Q 2 are given. The experimental data agree well with the quark-parton model predictions if a yield of 0.06 ± 0.02 of $K^0$'s and Λ's from charm production is included. Upper limits for D-meson production are given and the shape of the charmed quark fragmentation function is discussed. Inclusive production of the K ∗ (890) and Σ(1385) resonances is measured and it is shown that only about 5% of the K 0 mesons and Λ hyperons results from resonance decays. Relative production rates of neutral strange particles on proton and neutron targets are studied.

We have studied transverse momenta of charged hadrons in the current fragmentation region of charged current antineutrino- nucleon interactions observed in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber. The measured momentum squared transverse to the v μ + plane (p out 2 ) of the negative hadrons varies as a function of Q 2 , W 2 and x as expected from t he leading order perturbative QCD calculations. Positively charged hadrons show a different transverse momentum behaviour as a function of Q 2 .

We present results on inclusive particle production in the antineutrino charged current induced hadron jets observed in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber. Fractional energy distributions, particle ratios and average multiplicities of the hadrons in the jets are measured. Ratios between the inclusive production rates of different mesons in the jets are studied to seek evidence for the d-quark origin of the observed hadrons. Good over-all agreement with the hypothesis of d-quark fragmentation with universal fragmentation functions obeying isospin systematics is established.

We present results on the experimental study of inelastic charged-current antineutrino-nucleon scattering in the energy range of 10–200 GeV. The data sample, consisting of about 6500 antineutrino-induced events, was obtained in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy neon-hydrogen mixture. The differential cross sections for ν μ N interactions are presented in terms of scaling variables x and y . The structure functions F 2 ν and xF 3 ν have been evaluated as functions of x and E ν . A deviation from the scaling hypothesis, similar to those found in other experiments on inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, has been observed. The data are interpreted in the framework of the quark-parton model. Quark and antiquark distributions and their energy dependences are presented.

Observation of $\mu^+ e^+$ Events in Anti-neutrino - Nucleon Interactions

The first observation of μ + e + events produced in antineutrino interactions using the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber is reported. The relative yield of μ + e + events is (4.8 −3.2 +5.3 ) × 10 −4 of all charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 10 GeV. The observed V 0 rate is 1.0 −1.0 +1.2 per μ + e + event. Possible sources of these events are discussed.

Coherent 3 π production on nine different nuclear targets has been studied using a 40 GeV/ c π − beam at the Serpukhov accelerator (CERN-Serpukhov experiment no. 5). The absorption in nuclear matter of the produced system has been measured, analysing the data on the different nuclear targets. Identica results are obtained from the differential cross sections and from the coherent nuclear cross sections. The 1 + waves show a very weak absorption, definitely smaller than 0 − and 2 − waves. No influence on the absorption comes from the spin-flip amplitudes, which have been found to be negligible in the coherent region.

Deep inelastic scattering cross sections have been measured with the CERN SPS muon beam at incident energies of 120 and 200 GeV. Approximately 100 000 events at each energy are used to obtain the structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) in the kinematic region 0.3< x <0.7 and 25 GeV 2 < Q 2 <200 GeV 2 .
