New experimental results on the π + d → π + π − pp and π + d → π + π + nn reactions at T π 1 = 283 MeV are presented. In-plane coincidence data were taken with the CHAOS spectrometer using pions from the M11 channel at TRIUMF. Because of the quasi-free nature of the pion-production reaction, the present study is equivalent to studying the elementary π + N → π + π ± N reactions on protons and neutrons simultaneously. These exclusive measurements provide a set of many-fold differential cross sections which are an ideal testing ground for microscopic models describing the πN → ππN reaction. The interpretation of the data relies on a model which is based on effective chiral Lagrangians to describe the piece of the reaction that includes only π's and N 's, and on effective Lagrangians to account for intermediate Δ's and N ∗ ' s . The measured many-fold differential cross sections are used to constrain some parameters of the model (ξ, f Δ , C, g N ∗ Δπ and g N ∗ Nπ ). Finally, the π + π ± invariant mass distributions display no evidence of strongly interacting pion pairs in either the I = J = 0 or the I = 2 J = 0 channels.

The total cross section for the π−p→π−π+n reaction has been measured at incident pion kinetic energies of 200, 190, 184, and 180 MeV. In addition, the π+p→π+π+n reaction was measured at 200 and 184 MeV. A fit of the cross sections by heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory yields values of 8.5±0.6(mπ−3) and 2.5±0.1(mπ−3) for the reaction matrix elements A10 and A32, which correspond to values for the s-wave isospin-0 and isospin-2 π−π scattering lengths of a0=0.23±0.08(mπ−1) and a2=−0.031±0.008(mπ−1), respectively.

The 1H(e,e′K+)Λ reaction was studied as a function of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q2, and the virtual photon polarization, ɛ. For each of four Q2 settings, 0.52, 0.75, 1.00, and 2.00 (GeV/c)2, the longitudinal and transverse virtual photon cross sections were extracted in measurements at three virtual photon polarizations. The Q2 dependence of the σL/σT ratio differs significantly from current theoretical predictions. This, combined with the precision of the measurement, implies a need for revision of existing calculations.

The double differential cross section for pn→pp(1S0)π− at three beam energies has been extracted from the quasifree process pd→pppπ−. A comparison is carried out with single differential cross section measurements for 3He(π−,pn)n, where the pion is thought to be absorbed onto a pp(1S0) “diproton” state. A significant difference is observed in the shape of the angular distribution between the production and absorption data. This difference is ascribed to the effects of the 3He nuclear environment characterizing the absorption process; however, an adequate theoretical explanation is not available.

Inclusive single-particle distributions and transverse momenta of forward produced charged hadrons in mu p scattering at 470-GeV

Using data from the Fermilab fixed target experiment E665, general properties of forward produced charged hadrons in μp interactions at a primary muon energy of 470 GeV are investigated. The normalized inclusive singleparticle distributions for Feynman-x D(xF ) and for the transverse momentum D(p2t , xF ) are measured as a function of W and Q2. The dependence of the average transverse momentum squared 〈p2t〉 on xF , W and Q2 is studied. The increasing contribution from diffractive production as Q2 decreases leads to a reduction of the average charged hadron multiplicities at low (positive) xF and an enhancement at large xF , for Q2 ≲ 10 GeV2. It also reduces 〈p2t〉 for Q2 ≲ 5 GeV2 and 0.4 ≲ xF < 1.0.

Diffractive production of rho0 (770) mesons in muon - proton interactions at 470-GeV

The diffractive production of ρ0(770 @#@) mesons in muon-proton interactions is studied in the kinematic region 0.15 GeV2< Q2< 20 GeV2 and 20 GeV < ? < 420 GeV. The data were obtained in the Fermilab fixed-target experiment E665 with primary muons of 470 GeV energy. Results are presented on the Q2, x and ? dependence of the cross section, on the shape of the ρ+ρt - mass spectrum, on the slope of the diffraction peak and on the production and decay angular distributions of the ρ0(770). The cross section for diffractive production of ρ0 by virtual photons on protons depends mainly on Q2. At fixed Q2, no significant dependence on x or ? is observed. The extrapolation to Q2 = 0 yields a photoproduction cross section of (10.30 ± 0.33) μb. The slope of the t′ distribution has a value of (7.0 ± 0.2) GeV−2, with a tendency to decrease as Q2 increases. The production and decay angular distributions of the ρ0 depend strongly on Q2 and are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. The ratio R = σl/σt deduced from the decay angular distributions rises strongly with Q2, passing the value of 1 at Q2≈ 2 GeV2.

Spin transfer measurements of the pi anti-d ---> anti-p p reaction at energies spanning the Delta resonance

Inspire Record 456889 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.25720

The first spin-transfer experiment performed for the πd→→p→p reaction is described. Three spin-transfer parameters for this π-absorption process were determined, KLSa, KSSa, and KNNa, which correspond to the π-production parameters, KSLp, KSSp, and KNNp, of the time-reversed p→p→d→π process. Each observable was measured at a single angle for a number of energies spanning the Δ resonance of this system. The results are compared with the predictions of published partial wave amplitude fits which are primarily based on existing data for the time-reversed pp→dπ reaction, and also with the predictions of two current theories. The failure of these theories to describe the fundamental features of the data clearly demonstrates the need for further theoretical work in this area.

Multinucleon contributions to the C-12(pi+,p p) reaction at 100-MeV and 165-MeV incident pion energies

Differential and total cross sections for π + absorption on 12 C are presented at incident pion energies of 100 and 165 MeV. This is the first time that this reaction has been measured with a combination of good energy and angle information over an extensive region of phase space. Results are compared to extensive Monte Carlo simulations in order to investigate the role of two- and multinucleon absorption processes in this nucleus. Signatures of ISI and FSI in the pion absorption process are also investigated, in order to explain the complex reaction mechanism implied by the data.

The proton and deuteron structure functions F2p and F2d are measured in inelastic muon scattering with an average beam energy of 470 GeV. The data were taken at Fermilab experiment E665 during 1991 and 1992 using liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. The F2 measurements are reported in the range 0.0008<x<0.6 and 0.2<Q2<75 GeV2. These are the first precise measurements of F2 in the low x and Q2 range of the data. In the high x range of the data where they overlap in x and Q2 with the measurements from NMC, the two measurements are in agreement. The E665 data also overlap in x with the DESY HERA data, and there is a smooth connection in Q2 between the two data sets. At high Q2 the E665 measurements are consistent with QCD-evolved leading twist structure function models. The data are qualitatively described by structure function models incorporating the hadronic nature of the photon at low Q2. The Q2 and the W dependence of the data measure the transition in the nature of the photon between a pointlike probe at high Q2 and a hadronic object at low Q2.

Role of quasideuteron absorption in the Li-6 (pi+, p p) reaction at T(pi+) = 100-MeV, 165-MeV

Differential and total cross sections for π+ absorption on Li6, leading to the pp+4Heg.s., pp+4He*, and pp+X final states, are presented at incident pion energies of 100 and 165 MeV. We conclude that most of the cross section is confined to the level of coplanarity expected from quasideuteron absorption in the nuclear environment and that the contributions of nonquasideuteron absorption mechanisms are small. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
