Study of the Reaction K- p --> anti-K0 n at Momenta of 25-GeV/c and 40-GeV/c

Measurements were made of the differential cross sections for the charge exchange of K − mesons on protons at momenta of 25 and 40 GeV/ c using a high-precision spectrometer with no magnetic field. In the range 5–40 GeV/ c the reaction cross section follows a power-law dependence p K − −1.52 . In the snall momentum transfer region (− t ⪅ m π 2 ) a minimum is observed, similar to that discovered at lower energies. The differential cross sections t = 0 are considerably less than those predicted by the Regge-pole model. The parameters of the effective trajectory are determined.

We observe a resonance in the total cross section for hadron production in e+e− annihilation at a mass of 3772±6 MeV/c2 having a total width of 28±5 MeV/c2 and a partial width to electron pairs of 370±90 eV/c2.

Inclusive Production of Charged Pions in K- p Interactions at 32-GeV/c

Results are presented on the inclusive π ± production in K − p interactions at 32.1 GeV/ c . The invariant longitudinal distributions have been calculated both for π + and π − in the backward c.m. hemisphere and extrapolated in the forward hemisphere under some physical assumptions. The inclusive cross sections for π + and π − amount to 32.9 ± 1.5 mb and 35.0 ± 0.7 mb respectively. The energy dependence of the inclusive pion production has been analyzed in the framework of Mueller-Regge phenomenology both in the proton fragmentation and in the central region.

Phi Production in pi- p Collisions Near Threshold

Using a secondary pion beam from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron we have studied the process π−p→φn in the region of the cross-section enhancement near kinematic threshold. For incident momenta between 1.6 and 2 GeV/c, we have determined production and decay angular distributions and extrapolated total cross sections from a sample of about 160 φ's above background. The production and decay distributions are consistent with isotropy over this entire incident-momentum range. The extrapolated total cross section varies between 19 and 25 μb.

Polarization in p p Elastic Scattering at Small |t|

We have measured the polarization parameter for proton-proton elastic scattering at p0 = 6 GeV/c for |t|<0.5 (GeV/c)2 using the polarized proton beam at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. These data, together with all previous measurements in this t region, are well fitted by the empirical relation P = (0.481±0.010)(−t)12exp(2.291±0.085)t.

Particle Multiplicities in K- p Interactions at 32-GeV/c

The inclusive cross section and the average multiplicity are evaluated for most of the charged ( π ± , p, K ± ) and neutral (γ, π 0 , K 0 , K 0 , Λ, Λ , n ) particles produced in 32 GeV/ c K − p interactions; corresponding results are obtained for each charged topology separately. New results are given for the total charged multiplicity cross sections. The average longitudinal momentum of neutrals is found to be roughly equal to that of charged particles. The π + and π − multiplicity distributions are reconstructed and compared to the π 0 and to the total charged multiplicity distributions.

Observation of a Resonance at 4.4-GeV and Additional Structure Near 4.1-GeV in e+ e- Annihilation

We observe a resonancelike structure in the total cross section for hadron production by e+e− colliding beams at a mass of 4414 ± 7 MeV having a total width Γ=33±10 MeV. From the area under this resonance, we deduce the partial width to electron pairs to be Γee=440±140 eV. Further structure of comparable width is present near 4.1 GeV.
