We present data on the production of the baryons Λ,\(\bar \Lambda \),p and of the baryon resonances Σ*+ (1385) and Δ++ (1232) inK+p and π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. Results are given on total and semi-inclusive cross sections, Feynman-x spectra, transverse momentum distributions and Λ polarization. The data are compared with measurements at lower energies, with deep inclastic lepton nucleon data and with predictions of quark-parton models. The models underestimate Λ production in the central c.m. region, a feature also seen in recent heavy-ion data. This failure can be cured in JETSET 6.3 by adjustment of the di-quark break-up probability.

The production of Λ 's and Ξ − 's in proton-antiproton collisions at 200 and 900 GeV c.m. energy has been studied using decays observed in the UA5 streamer chambers. The results are compared to previously published 546 GeV data, to results from other experiments, and to four theoretical models. The Λ yield per inelastic event is estimated to be 0.42±0.11 at 200 GeV and 0.66±0.14 at 900 GeV. We find a mean number of Ξ − 's per inelastic collision of 0.03 −0.02 +0.04 at 200 GeV and 0.06 −0.03 +0.05 at 900 GeV. The average transverse momentum of Λ's in the rapidity region | y |⩽2 is found to be 0.80 −0.14 +0.20 GeV/ c at 200 GeV and 0.74±0.09 GeV/ c at 900 GeV. The average transverse momentum of Ξ − 's in the rapidity region | y |⩽3 is estimated to be 0.8 −0.2 +0.4 GeV/ c at 200 GeV and 0.7 −0.1 +0.2 GeV/ c at 900 GeV which is lower than the unexpectedly high value of 1.1±0.2 GeV/ c measured at 546 GeV. The ratio of Ξ − production to Λ production in the region | y |⩽2, p t >1 GeV/ c is 0.07 −0.04 +0.08 at 900 GeV. This value is consistent with the ratio found in e + e − collisions and lower energy pp collisions but lower than the value obtained at 546 GeV. The average particle composition of events at 200 and 900 GeV, estimated using UA5 data, is presented.

Production of ϱ 0 , K ∗0 , K ∗0 , and φ have been measured in proton-proton collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) at low p T in the central region. The transverse mass spectra are well described by exp (− aμ T ), with a = −6.4±0.2 GeV −1 . The cross sections for d σ/ d y| y=0 are 6.5±0.8±1.2 mb for ϱ 0 , 1.9±0.3±0.3 mb for K ∗) , 1.9±03±03 mb for K ∗0 , and 60.±0.12±0.13 mb for φ , where the first error is statistical and the second is sytematic.

Total and semi-inclusive cross sections, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions and spin density matrix elements of theK*+(892) andK*0(892) produced in the inclusive reactionsK+p→K*+(892)+X andK+p→K*0(892)+X at 32 GeV/c are studied in detail. The inclusive spectra of theK*(892) and their decay products are compared with pion and neutral kaon production. TheK*+(892) andK*+(892) are dominantly produced by kaon fragmentation processes. Final data on topological cross sections are presented. Inclusive single particle distributions for the reactionsK+p→ π±X at 32 GeV/c are discussed and compared with data at lower energies. Early scaling in the fragmentation regions is confirmed, while cross sections in th central region continue to rise with energy even faster than inpp interactions. Thex-andpT-dependence of the π+/π− ratio inK+p interactions is discussed and a comparison of reactionsK+p→ π±X andK−p→ π±X at 32 GeV/c is made in the context of constituent models. We also present transverse momentum distributions, show prominent seagull effects and study how they are influenced by resonance production.

Results are presented on the total and differential cross sections for the production of π+, π−, γ,\(\bar K^0 \),K0,K+, andK− in theK−p interactions at 70 GeV/c. The reactions p p → K ∗ (890) X , p p →Σ ± (1385) X and p p → S ∗ (993) X at 12 GeV/ c incident momentum have been studied using 19 000 events with a visible V 0 decay in BEBC. Inclusive production cross sections of these resonances as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity are presented. The contribution of annihilation to the production of the K ∗ (890) is investigated from a comparison with the corresponding pp data.

The inclusive production of resonances is systematically studied in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . Total production cross sections are given for three baryon resonances, five vector and three 2 + tensor mesons. Results are presented on the inclusive reactions p p → K 0 X , p p → Λ X and p p → Λ X at an incident antiproton momentum of 12 GeV/ c in BEBC. The cross sections are studied as functions of the Feynman scaling variable x , the rapidity, the transverse momentum of the V 0 and the missing mass squared. The dependence of the Λ and Λ polarization on x are also studied. Comparisons with proton-proton data at 12 GeV/ c are also made. Finally, events with two detected V 0 are analyzed in order to study correlations arising from the production of two strange neutral particles.
