The spin-rotation parameters A and R and the related spin-rotation angle β have been measured for π+p and π−p elastic scattering using protons polarized in the scattering plane. The pion-beam momenta are 427, 471, 547, 625, and 657 MeV/c and the angular range is −0.9≤cosΘc.m.≤0.3. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence, using a scintillator hodoscope for the pions, and the Large Acceptance Spectrometer combined with the JANUS polarimeter for the recoil protons. The results are compared with the four recent πN partial wave analyses (PWA's). Our data show that the major features of these PWA's are correct. The A and R measurements complete our program of pion-nucleon experiments, providing full data sets at three of the above beam momenta. Such sets can be used to test the constraints in the PWA's or to obtain a model-independent set of πN scattering amplitudes.

We have measured differential cross sections for pion elastic scattering from H3 and He3 in the angular region near the minimum in the non-spin-flip amplitude. Data were acquired for incident pion energies of 180, 220, 256, and 295 MeV. Nuclear charge symmetry is investigated with the aid of several charge-symmetric ratios formed from combinations of measured cross sections. A particularly intriguing result is obtained from the superratio R, which is defined as R=dσ(π+3H)dσ(π−3H)/dσ(π+3He)dσ(π−3He). R is found to be greater than unity at 180 MeV and significantly smaller than unity at 256 MeV, with the transition occurring at around 210 MeV. The charge-symmetry prediction for this ratio (after allowance for the Coulomb force) is one, and is independent of energy and angle. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

The doubly differential cross section for the production of He3 and He4 by 800 MeV protons from C12, Ti, and Pb has been measured at laboratory angles of 6° and 15°. The momentum of the detected helium nuclei varied from 1 to 2 GeV/c, the maximum being well above the incident proton momentum of 1.46 GeV/c. The cross sections were found to increase with increasing target mass and decrease with increasing momentum and scattering angle. In our momentum region, the He3 production cross section is 1.5–10 times larger than He4 depending on the target and the momentum. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that the dominant reaction mechanism is a direct process where the initial nucleon-nucleon scattering is followed by a sequential pickup of neutrons.

The polarization of the recoil proton in π+p and π−p elastic scattering using a liquid-hydrogen target has been measured for backward angles at 547 and 625 MeV/c. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence using the large-acceptance spectrometer to detect and analyze the momentum of the pions and the JANUS polarimeter to identify and measure the polarization of the protons. Results from this experiment agree with other measurements of the recoil polarization, with analyzing-power data previously taken by this group, and with predictions of partial-wave analyses.

The π − yield in the momentum range 500–740 MeV/ c produced by 800 MeV protons incident on targets of Be and C has been measured at laboratory production angles between 0° and 20°. The yield of 725 MeV/ c π − from Be and C at 0° is a factor of 6 greater than at 20°, for 600 MeV/ c π − the factor is 3. The yield from beryllium is typically 30% higher than from carbon.

We have measured differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of charged pions from H3 and He3 into the backward hemisphere. Near the peak of the delta resonance, at Tπ=180 MeV, an angular distribution covering 114° to 168° in the laboratory extends our earlier measurements. At Tπ=142, 180, 220, and 256 MeV, we have measured an excitation function at angles approaching 170°. The cross sections for the reactions He3(π+,π+)3He, H3(π−,π−)3H show a rise at back angles which is not seen for He3(π−,π−)3He and H3(π+,π+)3H. There is a dip in the cross sections near 130° for Tπ=180 MeV.

The cross section for e+e- to pi+ pi- psi(2S) between threshold and \sqrt{s}=5.5 GeV is measured using 673 fb^{-1} of data on and off the \Upsilon(4S) resonance collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. Two resonant structures are observed in the pi+ pi- psi(2S) invariant mass distribution, one at 4361\pm 9\pm 9 MeV/c2 with a width of 74\pm 15\pm 10 MeV/c2, and another at 4664\pm 11\pm 5 MeV/c2 with a width of 48\pm 15\pm 3 MeV/c2, if the mass spectrum is parameterized with the coherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions. These values do not match those of any of the known charmonium states.

We report a measurement of the exclusive \$e^+e^- \to \Lambda_c^+ \Lambda_c^-$ cross section as a function of center-of-mass energy near the $\Lambda_c^+ \Lambda_c^-$ threshold. A clear peak with a significance of $8.8\sigma$ is observed in the $\Lambda_c^+ \Lambda_c^-$ invariant mass distribution just above threshold. With an assumption of a resonance origin for the observed peak, a mass and width of $M=(4634^{+8}_{-7} \mathrm{(stat.)} ^{+5}_{-8} \mathrm{(sys.)})\mevc$ and $\Gamma_{\mathrm{tot}}=(92^{+40}_{-24} \mathrm{(stat.)}^{+10}_{-21} \mathrm{(sys.)})\mev$ are determined. The analysis is based on a study of events with initial-state-radiation photons in a data sample collected with the Belle detector at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and nearby continuum with an integrated luminosity of 695 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^_$ collider.

The dijet invariant mass distribution has been measured in the region between 140 and 1000 GeV/c2, in 1.8 TeV p p¯ collisions. Data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab show agreement with QCD calculations. A limit on quark compositeness of Λc>1.3 TeV is obtained. Axigluons with masses between 240 and 640 GeV/c2 are excluded at 95% C.L. if we assume ten open decay channels. Model-independent limits on the production of heavy particles decaying into two jets are also presented.

If quarks are composite particles then excited states are expected. We have searched in pp¯ collisions for excited quarks (q*) which decay to common quarks by emitting a W boson (q*→qW) or a photon (q*→qγ). The simplest model of excited quarks has been excluded for mass M*<540 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level.

We present a measurement of the ratio σB(W→eν)σB(Z0→e+e−) in p¯p collisions at s=1.8 TeV The data represent an integrated luminosity of 21.7 pb−1 from the 1992-1993 run of the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find σB(W→eν)σB(Z0→e+e−)=10.90±0.32(stat)±0.29(syst). From this value, we extract a value for the W width, Γ(W)=2.064±0.061(stat)±0.059(syst) GeV, and the branching ratio, Γ(W→eν)Γ(W)=0.1094±0.0033(stat)±0.0031(syst), and we set a decay-mode-independent limit on the top quark mass mtop>62 GeV/c2 at the 95% C.L.

We report on a study of W+ photon production in approximately 20 pb−1 of p−p¯ collisions at s=1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Our results are in good agreement with standard model expectations and are used to obtain limits on anomalous CP-conserving WWγ couplings of −2.3<Δκ<2.2 for λ=0 and −0.7<λ<0.7 for Δκ=0 at 95% C.L. We obtain the same limits for CP-violating couplings. These results provide limits on the higher-order electromagnetic moments of the W boson of 0.8<gW<3.1 for qWe=1 and −0.6<qWe<2.7 for gW=2 at 95% C.L.

We present the results of a search in p¯p collisions at s=1.8 TeV for the top quark decaying to a charged Higgs boson (H±). We search for dilepton final states from the decay chain tt¯→HH (or HW, or WW) + bb¯→ll+X. In a sample of 19.3 pb−1 collected during 1992-93 with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, we observe 2 events with a background estimation of 3.0 ± 1.0 events. Limits at 95% C.L. in the (Mtop,MH±) plane are presented. For the case Mtop<MW+Mb, we exclude at 95% C.L. the entire (Mtop,MH±) plane for the branching ratio B(H→τν) larger than 75%. We also interpret the results in terms of the parameter tan β of two-Higgs-doublet models.

A prompt photon cross section measurement from the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment is presented. Detector and trigger upgrades, as well as 6 times the integrated luminosity compared with our previous publication, have contributed to a much more precise measurement and extended PT range. As before, QCD calculations agree qualitatively with the measured cross section, but the data has a steeper slope than the calculations.
Note that the sytematic uncertainties are approximately 100 pct correlated bin to bin.
The charge asymmetry has been measured using $19,039W$ decays recorded by the CDF detector during the 1992-93 run of the Tevatron Collider. The asymmetry is sensitive to the ratio of $d$ and $u$ quark distributions to $x<0.01$ at $Q~2 \approx M_W~2$, where nonperturbative effects are minimal. It is found that of the two current sets of parton distributions, those of Martin, Roberts and Stirling (MRS) are favored over the sets most recently produced by the CTEQ collaboration. The $W$ asymmetry data provide a stronger constraints on $d/u$ ratio than the recent measurements of $F_2~{\mu n}/F_2~{\mu p}$ which are limited by uncertainties originating from deutron corrections.

The shape of the angular distribution is similar to that observed in photon + jet data and significantly different from that observed in dijet data.

We have used 19 pb**-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for new particles decaying to dijets. We exclude at 95% confidence level models containing the following new particles: axigluons with mass between 200 and 870 GeV, excited quarks with mass between 80 and 570 GeV, and color octet technirhos with mass between 320 and 480 GeV.
Here UNSPEC refers to axigluons, excited quarks, colour octet technirhos, ngauge bosons (W' and Z') and diquarks (D and Dc). M is the mass of the new particle (axigluon, q*, ...). Measurements are given to the 95% confidence limit.
The properties of two-, three-, four-, five-, and six-jet events with multijet masses >600 GeV /c2 are compared with QCD predictions. The shapes of the multijet-mass and leading-jet-angular distributions are approximately independent of jet multiplicity and are well described by the NJETS matrix element calculation and the HERWIG parton shower Monte Carlo predictions. The observed jet transverse momentum distributions for three- and four-jet events discriminate between the matrix element and parton shower predictions, the data favoring the matrix element calculation.

We present a measurement of $\sigma \cdot B(W \rightarrow e \nu)$ and $\sigma \cdot B(Z~0 \rightarrow e~+e~-)$ in proton - antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =1.8$ TeV using a significantly improved understanding of the integrated luminosity. The data represent an integrated luminosity of 19.7 pb$~{-1}$ from the 1992-1993 run with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). We find $\sigma \cdot B(W \rightarrow e \nu) = 2.49 \pm 0.12$nb and $\sigma \cdot B(Z~0 \rightarrow e~+e~-) = 0.231 \pm 0.012$nb.

We present the first measurement of associated direct photon + muon production in hadronic collisions, from a sample of 1.8 TeV $p \bar p$ collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily from the Compton scattering process $cg \to c\gamma$, with the final state charm quark producing a muon. Hence this measurement is sensitive to the charm quark content of the proton. The measured cross section of $29\pm 9 pb^{-1}$ is compared to a leading-order QCD parton shower model as well as a next-to-leading-order QCD calculation.
The statistical and systematic errors are added in quadrature.

We present the first measurement of the jet pseudorapidity distribution in direct photon events from a sample of pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV, recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily from hard quark-gluon Compton scattering, qg→qγ, with the final state quark producing the jet of hadrons. The jet pseudorapidity distribution in this model is sensitive to parton momentum fractions between 0.015 and 0.15. We find that the shape of the measured pseudorapidity distribution agrees well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations.
The fully corrected shape of the pseudorapidity distribution normalised to the data in the absolute pseudorapidity bin from 0 to 0.7.
We have used 87 pb^-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for new particles decaying to b bbar. We present the results of a search for the top quark in 19.3 pb−1 of p¯p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. The data were collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider using the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The search includes standard model tt¯ decays to final states eeνν¯, eμνν¯, and μμνν¯ as well as e+ν+jets or μ+ν+jets. In the (e,μ)+ν+jets channel we search for b quarks from t decays via secondary vertex identification and via semileptonic decays of the b and cascade c quarks. In the dilepton final states we find two events with a background of 0.56−0.13+0.25 events. In the e,μ+ν+jets channel with a b identified via a secondary vertex, we find six events with a background of 2.3±0.3. With a b identified via a semileptonic decay, we find seven events with a background of 3.1±0.3. The secondary vertex and semileptonic-decay samples have three events in common. The probability that the observed yield is consistent with the background is estimated to be 0.26%. The statistics are too limited to firmly establish the existence of the top quark; however, a natural interpretation of the excess is that it is due to tt¯ production. We present several cross-checks. Some support this hypothesis; others do not. Under the assumption that the excess yield over background is due to tt¯, constrained fitting on a subset of the events yields a mass of 174±10−12+13 GeV/c2 for the top quark. The tt¯ cross section, using this top quark mass to compute the acceptance, is measured to be 13.9−4.8+6.1 pb.
Cross section refers to top quark mass equals 174 +- 10 +13 - 12 GeV. Two events in the dilepton final states and six events in the electron or muon nu jets final states.
We summarize a search for the top quark with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in a sample of $\bar{p}p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 1.8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 19.3pb$~{-1}$. We find 12 events consistent with either two $W$ bosons, or a $W$ boson and at least one $b$ jet. The probability that the measured yield is consistent with the background is 0.26\%. Though the statistics are too limited to establish firmly the existence of the top quark, a natural interpretation of the excess is that it is due to $t\bar{t}$ production. Under this assumption, constrained fits to individual events yield a top quark mass of $174 \pm 10~{+13}_{-12}$ GeV/c$~2$. The $t\bar{t}$ production cross section is measured to be $13.9~{+6.1}_{-4.8}$pb. (Submitted to Physical Review Letters on May 16, 1994).

We present a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry of the process pp¯→Z0/γ+X,Z0/γ→e+e− at Mee>MZ, using 110pb−1 of data at s=1.8TeV collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measured charge asymmetries are 0.43±0.10 in the invariant mass region Mee>105GeV/c2, and 0.070±0.016 in the region 75<Mee<105GeV/c2. These results are consistent with the standard model values of 0.528±0.009 and 0.052±0.002, respectively.
The forward-backward asymmetry resuts from angular differential cross section : D(SIG)/D(COS(THETA*) = A*(1 + COS(THETA*)**2) + B*COS(THETA*), where THETA * is the emission angle of the E- relative to the quark momentum in the rest frame of the E+ E- pair.
We search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a massive vector boson in 91±7pb−1 of pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume the Higgs scalar H0 decays to a bb¯ pair with branching ratio β, and we consider the hadronic decays of the vector boson V ( W or Z). Observations are consistent with background expectations. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on σ(pp¯→H0V)β as a function of the scalar mass (MH0) over the range 70<MH0<140GeV/c2. When combined with an analysis of the case where V is a leptonically decaying W, these limits vary from 23 pb at MH0=70GeV/c2 to 17 pb at MH0=140GeV/c2.

The data are from 108pb−1 of integrated luminosity collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Measurements of the cross section ratio for jet transverse energy thresholds (ETmin) ranging from 15 to 95 GeV are compared to theoretical predictions using next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. We present a measurement of the t-tbar cross section in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 109 pb-1 collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measurement uses t-tbar decays into final states which contain one or two high transverse momentum leptons and multiple jets, and final states which contain only jets. Using acceptances appropriate for a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c^2, we find sigma(t-tbar)=7.6 (+1.8 -1.5) pb .

A strong signal for double parton (DP) scattering is observed in a 16pb−1 sample of p¯p→γ/π0+3jets+X data from the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. In DP events, two separate hard scatterings take place in a single p¯p collision. We isolate a large sample of data (∼14000events) of which 53% are found to be DP. The process-independent parameter of double parton scattering, σeff, is obtained without reference to theoretical calculations by comparing observed DP events to events with hard scatterings in separate p¯p collisions. The result σeff=(14.5±1.7−2.3+1.7)mb represents a significant improvement over previous measurements, and is used to constrain simple models of parton spatial density. The Feynman x dependence of σeff is investigated and none is apparent. Further, no evidence is found for kinematic correlations between the two scatterings in DP events.
The cross section for Double Parton scattering comprised of scatterings A and B is written: SIG(DP) = SIG(A)*SIG(B)/CONST(NAME=SIG-EFF). The value of the constant SIG-EFF is measured here.
We have searched for heavy neutral gauge bosons (Z′) in dielectron and dimuon decay modes using 110pb−1 of p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. For mass MZ′>600GeV/c2, the upper limit is 40 fb at 95% confidence level. We set the lower mass limits of 690, 590, 620, 595, 565, 630, and 600GeV/c2 for ZSM′, Zψ, Zη, Zχ, ZI, ZLR, and ZALRM, respectively.

We report a measurement of the ratios of the decay rates of the B~+, B~0 and B~0_s mesons into exclusive final states containing a J/psi meson. The final states were selected from 19.6 pb~{-1} of p-pbar collisions recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. These data are interpreted to determine the bquark fragmentation fractions f_u, f_d and f_s. We also determine the branching fractions for the decay modes B~+ --> J/psi K~+, B~+ --> J/psi K~*(892)~+, B~0 --> J/psi K~0, B~0 --> J/psi K~*(892)~0 and B_s~0 --> J/psi phi(1020). We discuss the implications of these measurements to B meson decay models.

We present evidence for dilepton events from t tbar production with one electron or muon and one hadronically decaying tau lepton from the decay t tbar -> (l nu_l) (tau nu_tau) b bbar, (l=e, mu), using the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In a 109 pb~-1 data sample of p pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV we expect 1 signal event and a total background of 2 events; we observe 4 candidate events (2 e tau and 2 mu tau). Three of these events have jets identified as b candidates, compared to an estimated background of 0.28+-0.02 events.
Two complementary techniques for identifying TAU's are used (see text), one'track-based' (C=TRCK) and other 'calorimeter-based' (C=CALO).
The inclusive jet differential cross section has been measured for jet transverse energies, $E_T$, from 15 to 440 GeV, in the pseudorapidity region 0.1$\leq | \eta| \leq $0.7. The results are based on 19.5 pb$~{-1}$ of data collected by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data are compared with QCD predictions for various sets of parton distribution functions. The cross section for jets with $E_T>200$\ GeV is significantly higher than current predictions based on O($\alpha_s~3$) perturbative QCD calculations. Various possible explanations for the high-$E_T$\ excess are discussed.

For events with a W boson and four or more jets, the shape of the "H" distribution deviates by 3.8 standard deviations from that expected from known backgrounds to ttbar production. However this distribution agrees well with a linear combination of background and ttbar events, the agreement being best for a top mass of 180 GeV/c^2.
A result of the study of the W + >= 4JETS data sample used in PRL 74, 2626, based on 67 pb-1 of integrated luminosity.. Different fit results due to two choices of the Q2 scale in VECBOS program (see paper).
We present a study of events with Z bosons and hadronic jets produced in $\overline{p}p$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data consist of 6708 $Z \rightarrow e~+e~-$ decays from 106 pb$~{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected using the CDF detector at the Tevatron Collider. The Z $+ \ge n$ jet cross sections and jet production properties have been measured for n = 1 to 4. The data compare well to predictions of leading order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiation and simulated parton fragmentation.
The notation (N)JET(S) means greater than or equal to N jets. Cross sections include the branching ratio to E+ E-.

We establish the existence of the top quark using a 67 pb^-1 data sample of Pbar-P collisions at Sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Employing techniques similar to those we previously published, we observe a signal consistent with t-tbar decay to WW b-bbar, but inconsistent with the background prediction by 4.8 sigma. Additional evidence for the top quark is provided by a peak in the reconstructed mass distribution. We measure the top quark mass to be 176 +/-8(stat) +/- 10(sys.) GeV/c^2, and the t-tbar production cross section to be 6.8 +3.6 -2.4 pb.
Cross section refers to top quark mass equal 176. (+- 8 +- 10) GeV.. Error contains both statistical and systematic uncertainty.
The properties of high-mass multijet events produced at the Fermilab proton-antiproton collider are compared with leading order QCD matrix element predictions, QCD parton shower Monte Carlo predictions, and the predictions from a model in which events are distributed uniformly over the available multibody phase-space. Multijet distributions corresponding to (4N-4) variables that span the N-body parameter space are found to be well described by the QCD calculations for inclusive three-jet, four-jet, and five-jet events. The agreement between data, QCD Matrix Element calculations, and QCD parton shower Monte Carlo predictions suggests that 2 -> 2 scattering plus gluon radiation provides a good first approximation to the full LO QCD matrix element for events with three, four, or even five jets in the final state.

We present a measurement of the differential cross section dσ/dΣETjet for the production of multijet events in pp¯ collisions where the sum is over all jets with transverse energy ETjet>ETmin. The measured cross section for events with ΣETjet>320GeV is compared to O(αs3) perturbative QCD predictions and QCD parton shower Monte Carlo predictions. The agreement between the O(αs3) predicted and observed event rates is reasonable for ETmin=100GeV, but poorer for ETmin=20GeV.
The ET shown here (unless specified otherwise) is the sum of all the jets' individual ETs. All jets are required to have the absolute values of their pseudorapidity < 4.2 and data are given for two different minimum ET cut-offs.. The errors given are statistical only.
Integrated cross sections. Again ET is the sum of the individual ETs of thejets.
We describe the properties of six-jet events, with the six-jet mass exceeding 520GeV/c2, produced at the Fermilab proton-antiproton collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV. Observed distributions for a set of 20 multijet variables are compared with predictions from the HERWIG QCD parton shower Monte Carlo program, the NJETS leading order QCD matrix element Monte Carlo program, and a phase-space model in which six-jet events are distributed uniformly over the kinematically allowed region of the six-body phase space. In general the QCD predictions provide a good description of the observed six-jet distributions.

We report on a measurement of the branching fraction of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay Bu+→J/ψπ+, where J/ψ→μ+μ−. The data were collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992–1995 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 110pb−1 in p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV. A signal of 28−9+10 events is observed and we determine the ratio of branching fractions B(Bu+→J/ψπ+)/B(Bu+→J/ψK+) to be [5.0−1.7+1.9(stat)±0.1(syst)]%. Using the world average value for B(Bu+→J/ψK+), we calculate the branching fraction B(Bu+→J/ψπ+) to be (5.0−1.9+2.1)×10−5. We also search for the decay Bc+→J/ψπ+ and report a 95% confidence level limit on σ(Bc+)B(Bc+→J/ψπ+)/σ(Bu+)B(Bu+→J/ψK+) as a function of the Bc+ lifetime.

We present a search for first generation leptoquark with 110pb^1 of data collected with the CDF detector. We set 95% C.L. cross section limits as a function of the leptoquark mass.
It is assumed that first generation scalar leptoquark has the ranching ratio to electron and quark equal to 1.
We present results of a search for W+W− production through the leptonic decay channel W+W−→l+l−νν¯ in p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV. In a 108pb−1 data sample recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, five W+W− candidates are found with an expected standard model background of 1.2±0.3 events. The W+W− production cross section is measured to be σ(p¯p→W+W−)=10.2−5.1+6.3(stat)±1.6(syst)pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. Limits on WWγ and WWZ anomalous couplings are presented.

We report the first observation of diffractively produced W bosons. In a sample of W -> e nu events produced in p-barp collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, we find an excess of events with a forward rapidity gap, which is attributed to diffraction. The probability that this excess is consistent with non-diffractive production is 1.1 10^{-4} (3.8 sigma). The relatively low fraction of W+Jet events observed within this excess implies that mainly quarks from the pomeron, which mediates diffraction, participate in W production. The diffractive to non-diffractive W production ratio is found to be R_W=(1.15 +/- 0.55)%.
