Using non-tagged bremsstrahlung produced by a 130 MeV–20 μA c.w. electron beam of MAMI A quasi-free Compton scattering by the neutron was investigated via the 2 H( γ , γ 'n) 1 H reaction for lab scattering angles of θ γ = 90° and 135°. The energy spectrum and angular distribution of recoiling neutrons were measured via time of flight and a plastic-scintillator hodoscope, respectively. Double-differential cross sections for quasi-free scattering by the neutron were determined on an absolute scale by normalizing to the Compton cross section of the proton. By comparing the experimental double-differential cross sections with predictions the electric polarizability of the neutron was determined, leading to α n = (10.7 −10.7 +3.3 ) × 10 −4 fm 3 . Thus, the upper limit of α n is further reduced as compared to our previous result, but the lower limit is still consistent with zero.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS OF MEDIUM AND HEAVY TARGET NUCLEI WITH HIGH-ENERGY PROJECTILES: SPALLATION OF Mn-55, Co-59, Ni-nat AND Cu-nat BY 3.65-AGeV C-12 IONS AND 3.65-GeV PROTONS

Nuclear reactions induced by 3·65 A GeV12C-ions and 3·65 GeV protons on target elements55Mn,59Co,nat Ni andnatCu were investigated by using the foil stack activation technique and Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectroscopy. Charge dispersions and mass-yield distributions of radioactive residues were obtained from the parametrization of measured spallation cross sections. Discussion of results from this and other radiochemical reactions of high-energy protons and12C-ions with complex nuclei is presented in terms of the concepts of limiting fragmentation and factorization.

The Threshold Photoproduction of pi0 on Nucleons and on Few Nucleon Systems

Argan, P. ; Audit, G. ; Bloch, A. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 206 (1988) 4, 1988.
Inspire Record 251858 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29971

The absolute value of the π 0 photoproduction cross section on the proton recently measured near threshold enables to reanalyze previous data collected on 2 H, 3 He, and 4 He relatively to the proton. Absolute cross sections are presented for these nuclei in the energy region extending up to 10 MeV above threshold. The threshold s-wave amplitudes for 2 H and 3 He thus obtained are discussed in relation with the neutron threshold amplitude E ( nπ 0 ) 0+ value.

COULOMB - NUCLEAR INTERFERENCE IN PROTON DEUTERIUM ELASTIC SCATTERING AT 600-MEV AND THE REAL PART OF P N SCATTERING AMPLITUDE

Inspire Record 170137 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.37549

The differential cross-sections for the elastic scattering of protons on deuterium have been measured at 600 MeV in the |t| range between 0.003 and 0.030 (GeV/c)2. The results are analysed by using the Bethe and Glauber formalisms taking into account spin effects in deuterium wave function and nucleon-nucleon amplitudes. The ratio between the real and the imaginary parts of the spin-independent protonneutron amplitude αpn deduced from dispersion calculations and phase shift analysis is compared with experimental results.

Measurement of polarization observables $\textbf{T}$, ${\textbf{P}}$, and ${\textbf{H}}$ in $\mathbf {\pi ^0}$ and $\mathbf {\eta }$ photoproduction off quasi-free nucleons

The target asymmetry T, recoil asymmetry P, and beam-target double polarization observable H were determined in exclusive $\pi ^0$ and $\eta $ photoproduction off quasi-free protons and, for the first time, off quasi-free neutrons. The experiment was performed at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn, Germany, with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector setup, using a linearly polarized photon beam and a transversely polarized deuterated butanol target. Effects from the Fermi motion of the nucleons within deuterium were removed by a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state invariant mass. A comparison of the data obtained on the proton and on the neutron provides new insight into the isospin structure of the electromagnetic excitation of the nucleon. Earlier measurements of polarization observables in the $\gamma p \rightarrow \pi ^0 p$ and $\gamma p \rightarrow \eta p$ reactions are confirmed. The data obtained on the neutron are of particular relevance for clarifying the origin of the narrow structure in the $\eta n$ system at $W = 1.68\ \textrm{GeV}$. A comparison with recent partial wave analyses favors the interpretation of this structure as arising from interference of the $S_{11}(1535)$ and $S_{11}(1650)$ resonances within the $S_{11}$-partial wave.
