The Spin Correlation Parameter and Analyzing Power in $n p$ Elastic Scattering at Intermediate-energies

Phys.Rev.C 40 (1989) 2684-2696, 1989.

In order to improve existing I=0 phase shift solutions, the spin correlation parameter ANN and the analyzing powers A0N and AN0 have been measured in n-p elastic scattering over an angular range of 50°–150° (c.m.) at three neutron energies (220, 325, and 425 MeV) to an absolute accuracy of ±0.03. The data have a profound effect on various phase parameters, particularly the P11, D23, and ε1 phase parameters which in some cases change by almost a degree. With the exception of the highest energy, the data support the predictions of the latest version of the Bonn potential. Also, the analyzing power data (A0N and AN0) measured at 477 MeV in a different experiment over a limited angular range [60°–80° (c.m.)] are reported here.

Charge Symmetry Breaking in $n p$ Elastic Scattering at 477-{MeV}

Phys.Rev.D 39 (1989) 2464, 1989.
Inspire Record 267187 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23224

The effect of isospin-violating, charge-symmetry-breaking (CSB) terms in the np interaction has been observed at TRIUMF by measuring the difference in the zero-crossing angles of the neutron and proton analyzing powers, An and Ap, at a neutron energy of 477 MeV. The scattering asymmetries were measured with a neutron beam incident on a polarizable proton target. To reduce systematic errors, interleaved measurements of An and Ap were made using the same beam and target (apart from their respective polarization states). Neutrons and protons were detected in coincidence in the center-of-mass angle range from 59°–80°. The difference in zero-crossing angles was 0.340°±0.162° (±0.058°), which yields ΔA≡An-Ap=0.0047±0.0022 (±0.0008) using dA/dθc.m.=−0.01382 deg−1. The second errors represent systematic effects. This result is in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations which include CSB effects due to the np mass difference in π, ρ, and 2π exchange, electromagnetic coupling of the neutron anomalous magnetic moment to the proton current, ρ-ω-meson mixing, and short- and medium-range effects of the up- and down-quark mass difference.

Measurements of Spin Parameters in $p p$ Elastic Scattering at 6-{GeV}/$c$

Linn, S.L. ; Perlmutter, A. ; Crosbie, E.A. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 26 (1982) 550, 1982.
Inspire Record 11848 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23900

We measured the differential cross section for proton-proton elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c, with both initial spins oriented normal to the scattering plane. The analyzing power A shows significant structure with a large broad peak reaching about 24% near P⊥2=1.6 (GeV/c)2. The spin-spin correlation parameter Ann exhibits more dramatic structure, with a small but very sharp peak rising rapidly to about 13% at 90°c.m.. This sharp peak may be caused by particle-identity effects.

Phys.Rev.D 21 (1980) 580-598, 1980.
Inspire Record 157432 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24184

The Wolfenstein parameters D, R, and A and the polarization parameter P have been measured for p−p elastic scattering at 312, 392, 493, and 575 MeV kinetic energy. The center-of-mass angular range observed was from 3° to 33°. The experiment was performed at SIN, using a polarized proton beam. These data significantly improve the determination of I=1 phase shifts.

Spin Spin Forces in 6-{GeV}/$c$ Neutron - Proton Elastic Scattering

Phys.Rev.Lett. 43 (1979) 983, 1979.

Measurement was made of dσdt for n↑+p↑→n+p at P⊥2=0.8 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2 at 6 GeV/c. The 6-GeV/c 53%-polarized neutrons from the 12-GeV/c polarized deuteron beam at the Argonne zero-gradient synchroton were scattered from our 75%-polarized proton target. Both spins were oriented perpendicular to the scattering plane. We found large unexpected spin-spin effects in n−p elastic scattering which are quite different from the p−p spin-spin effects.

Spin Dependence of High p-Transverse**2 Elastic p p Scattering

Phys.Rev.Lett. 41 (1978) 1257, 1978.
Inspire Record 7117 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20867

We measured dσdt for p↑+p↑→p+p from P⊥2=4.50 to 5.09 (GeV/c)2 at 11.75 GeV/c. We used a 59%-polarized proton beam and a 71%-polarized proton target with both spins oriented perpendicular to the scattering plane. In these large-P⊥2 hard-scattering events, spin effects are very large and the ratio (dσdt)↑↑:(dσdt)↑↓ grows rapidly with increasing P⊥2, reaching a value of 4 at 90° (c.m.). Thus, hard elastic scattering, which is presumably due to the direct scattering of the protons' constituents, may only occur when the two incident protons' spins are parallel.

We measured d σ d t(90° cm ) for ↑+ p ↑→ p + p from 1.75 to 5.5 GeV/ c , using the Argonne zero-gradient synchrotron 70% polarized proton beam and a 70% polarized proton target. We found that the spin-spin correlation parameter. A nn , equals 60% at low energy, then drops sharply to about 10% near 3.5 GeV/ c , and remains constant up to 5.5 GeV/ c .
