The n̄p total and annihilation cross section have been measured from near N̄N threshold (1880 MeV) to 1940 MeV with RMS resolution ranging from 0.08 MeV (1880 MeV) to 6.7 MeV (1940 MeV). No significant narrow meson structures were seen, with 90% CL upper limits of 40–180 mb-MeV on σΓ for states with width less than our resolution. Combined with increasing unitarity bounds on σ as one approaches threshold, these limits confine widths of possible predicted states below 1900 MeV to less than ∼ 1 MeV.

The p̄p annihilation cross section has been measured with good resolution (∼2 MeV rms) in the mass range 1900–1960 MeV. No narrow structures are seen, the 90% confidence level upper limit being 8–12 mb‐MeV for the integrated area of a resonance in this mass range. However, we do not rule out a very narrow bump‐dip structure seen in an earlier experiment in the 1935–1941 MeV mass interval. The data also do not support the existence of a broad structure previously reported at 1937 MeV.
Fit of form A + B/D gives A = 8.5 +- 2.5mb and B = 40.7 +- 1.3mb in the mass range 1900 to 1960 MeV.

d2σdΩdT for π+ mesons produced in π−p→π−π+n was measured at seven incident energies between 203 and 357 MeV and the integrated reaction cross section was calculated. The matrix element, when extrapolated to threshold and compared with soft-pion calculations, determined the chiral-symmetry-breaking parameter ξ=0.05±0.26, which is consistent with the Weinberg Lagrangian. The large hard-pion contributions at 203 MeV demonstrated the absolute necessity for comparing at threshold.

The analysing powers in free →n p forward elastic scattering have been measured for incident neutron energies of 633, 784, 834, 934 and 985 MeV, and for momentum transfer 0.01 < ‖ t ‖ < 0.10 ( GeV / c ) 2 . The experiment used a recoil detector ionisation chamber which served at the same time as a gas target, and scintillation counters to measure the asymmetry of the scattered neutrons.

We report the first observation and cross-section measurement of νe+e−→νe+e−. Using neutrinos of energy less than 53 MeV, we observed 63±17 events consistent with ν+e−→ν+e−, of which 51±17 events are assigned to νe+e−→νe+e−. The resulting cross section, {[8.9±3.2(statistical) ±1.5(systematic)]×10−45 cm2/MeV} Eν, agrees with standard electroweak theory, rules out constructive interference between weak charged-current and neutral-current interactions, and begins to indicate the existence of interference between these two interactions.

We present the results of an experiment to search for associated charm production near threshold in 13-GeV/c π−p interactions. A large aperture PWC spectrometer was sensitive to the decay fragments of the forward-produced D*−’s expected from the two-body reactions π−+p→D*−+Λc+,Σc +,. . . . The missing baryon mass was determined from the vector momenta of the incident pion and the candidate D*−. No evidence for these reactions was found, which resulted in a 7-nb upper limit (95% confidence level) for each of the cross sections σ(π−p→D*−Λc+) and σ(π−p→D*−Σc+).
