Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY, we have observed a charmed meson of mass (2455±3±5) MeV/c2, decaying to D + π − . The natural width of this state is determined to be (15 +13+5 −10−10 ) MeV c 2 . The fragmentation function is hard, as expected for a leading charmed particle from nonresonant e + e − annihilation. Analysis of the decay angular distribution supports the hypothesis that the observed state is an L =1 excited charmed meson with spin-parity 2 + .

The production of charged kaon pairs in two-photon interactions has been studied with the ARGUS detector and the topological cross section has been measured. The γγ-widths and interference parameters have been determined for the tensor mesonsf2 (1270),a2 (1318) andf′2 (1525). The helicity structure assumed for the continuum contribution has a significant effect on the result. Upper limits have been obtained for the γγ-widths of the glueball candidate statesf2 (1720) andX (2230).

Using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II, we have investigated inclusive production of π±,K±,Ks0 and\(\bar p\) in multihadron events at 9.98 GeV and in direct decays of the ϒ(1S) meson, i.e. from quark and gluon fragmentation. The most pronounced difference is the rate of baryon production. The Lund Monte Carlo program gives a reasonable qualitative description, although it cannot reproduce our data in detail.

Two-photon production of the exclusive final statesp\(\bar p\)+nπ (n=0, 1, 2, and 3) has been investigated using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY. The reaction e+e−→e+e−π0π0 has been analyzed using 97 pb−1 of data taken with the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY e−e+ storage ring DORIS II at beam energies around 5.3 GeV. For the first time we have measured the cross section for γγ→π0π0 for π0π0 mvariant masses ranging from threshold to about 2 GeV. We measure an approximately flat cross section of about 10 nb for W=mπ0π0<0.8 GeV, which is below 0.6 GeV, in good agreement with a theoretical prediction based on an unitarized Born-term model. At higher invariant masses we observe formation of the f2(1270) resonance and a hint of the f0(975). We deduce the following two-photon widths: Γγγ(f2(1270))=3.19±0.16±0.280.29 keV and Γγγ(f0(975))<0.53 keV at 90% C.L. The decay-angular distributions show the π0π0 system to be dominantly spin 0 for W<0.7 GeV and spin 2, helicity 2 in the f2(1270) region, with helicity 0 contributing at most 22% (90% C.L.).

The Crystal Ball detector has been used at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY to study the reactionγγ→π0π0π0 in theπ0π0π0 invariant mass range from 850 MeV/c2 to 2600 MeV/c2. An enhancement around 1750 MeV/c2 is attributed to theπ2(1670) resonance. The observedπ0π0 invariant mass distribution and theπ0 angular distributions are consistent with those expected for the decay chainπ2→π0f2(1270)→π0π0π0. The Crystal Ball Collaboration has measured the energy spectrum of electrons from semileptonicB meson decays at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II. Branching ratios and weak mixing angles of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix are determined using several models for the hadronic matrix elements. We obtain the branching ratio for semileptonic.B decays to charmed states BR(B→evXc)=(11.7±0.4±1.0)%. Our result for the corresponding Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element is |Vcb|=0.052±0.006. The model dependence of both results is included in the error. We have not observed semileptonicB decays to non-charmed mesons. Analyzing the measured electron spectrum above 2.4 GeV, where nob→c decays contribute, we find BR(B→evXu)/BR(B→evXc)<6.5% at the 90% confidence level. This corresponds to an upper limit |Vub/Vcb|<0.21.

We report a measurement of the production of antideuterons d in e + e − annihilation at centre-of-mass energies around 10 GeV using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. Results on photoproduction of π + π − π 0 in the photon energy range 20–70 GeV are presented. For the ω meson, the production cross-section is found to be 1010±15 (statistical)±290 (systematic) nb and is constant over the incident photon energy range. Spin-density matrix elements are evaluated for ω meson production. The φ meson is observed with a total photoproduction cross section (corrected for branching ratio to π + π − π 0 ) of 610±35±170 nb. A third resonance, at 1.67 GeV, is seen in the mass spectrum and its interpretation is discussed. The production of a broad π + π − π 0 continuum, mainly via ϱπ, and peaking at 1.2 GeV, contributes with a cross section of about 2.5 ωb. The spin-parity content is analysed by the moments of the π + π − π 0 decay angular distribution in the helicity frame and by maximum likelihood fits to the π + π − π 0 Dalitz plot. It is found that production of J P = 1 − states accounts for less than half of the total mass spectrum above 900 MeV. There is a broad enhancement in the 1 + wave around 1.15 GeV indicating photoproduction of the H(1190) meson.

Using data collected with the ARGUS detector, we have performed a decay angular analysis of the enhancement, previously known as the D ∗ (2420), seen in the final state D ∗ (2010) + π − . We thereby exhibit that the observed broad structure is actually due to two relatively narrow resonances, one of which is identified as the D ∗ (2459) 0 , while the massof the other is measured to be (2414±2±5) MeV/ c 2 . The results of the analysis are in good agreement with the interpretation of the two states as L =1 D mesons of spin-parities 2 + and 1 + respectively.

The reactionγγ→π+π−π+π− has been studied with the ARGUS detector. The rate in the invariant mass region below 1.8 GeV/c2 is found to be largely due toρ0ρ0 production. A spin-parity analysis shows a dominance of the partial wave (JP,Jz)=(2+, 2) with a small admixture fromJP=0+. The contribution of negative parity states is consistent with zero. The large ratio of cross sectionsσ(γγ→ρ0ρ0)/σ(γγ→ρ+ρ−)≃4, and the dominance of theJP=2+ wave in the reactionγγ→ρ0ρ0 is a signature consistent with the production of an exotic (I=2) resonance.

The charge ratio, $R_\mu = N_{\mu^+}/N_{\mu^-}$, for cosmogenic multiple-muon events observed at an under- ground depth of 2070 mwe has been measured using the magnetized MINOS Far Detector. The multiple-muon events, recorded nearly continuously from August 2003 until April 2012, comprise two independent data sets imaged with opposite magnetic field polarities, the comparison of which allows the systematic uncertainties of the measurement to be minimized. The multiple-muon charge ratio is determined to be $R_\mu = 1.104 \pm 0.006 {\rm \,(stat.)} ^{+0.009}_{-0.010} {\rm \,(syst.)} $. This measurement complements previous determinations of single-muon and multiple-muon charge ratios at underground sites and serves to constrain models of cosmic ray interactions at TeV energies.
