This paper presents exhaustive, new data on the shower and compound multiplicity charactersties of 24 Mg-emulsion and 12 C-emulsion interactions at incident momentum of 4.5 GeV/ c per nucleon. A comparative study is made (whenever possible) with p-emulsion interaction data at the same incident momentum per nucleon. The linear dependences of different multplicities on shower and compound multiplicity, e.g., 〈 n i 〉 = a ij + k ij n j -( i ≠ j ), are also shown in this paper.

The reaction d+d→ α + π 0 which is in clear violation of charge symmetry conservation, has been observed for the first time at a laboratory energy of 1.10 GeV in an experiment carried out at the Saturne synchroton at Saclay. The number of π 0 's detected corresponds to a differential cross section d σ d Ω ∗ (π 0 ) = 0.97 ± 0.20 ± 0.15 pb/sr at a centre-of-mass angle of θ c . m . = 107°, where the first error bar refers to the statistical uncertainty and the second to the systematic. The reaction d+d→ α + γ was measured simultaneously with the π 0 production, leading to a differential cross section of d σ d Ω ∗ (γ) = 0.82±0.18±0.10 pb/sr at the slightly larger angle of θ c . m . = 110°. The available predictions of theoretical models of charge symmetry breaking, based upon η / π mixing, fall an order of magnitude below our measurement. However, these predictions for the η / π mixing level might be boosted by the η threshold (1.121 GeV) proximity, where this experiment is performed.

The differential cross section and analyzing power of the reaction pp → d π + were measured for nine incident proton energies between 725 and 1000 MeV. A magnetic spectrometer was used to detect either deuterons or pions. Cross-section and analyzing-power angular distributions were respectively fitted with Legendre polynomial and associated Legendre function expansions, the coefficients of which were found to vary smoothly with energy in the vicinity of the alleged 3 F 3 dibaryon resonance.
Data present here in form of Legendre polynomial fit.

The angular distribution of the inclusive reaction 4 He + p → 3 He + X was measured with 6.85 GeV/ c incident alphas. At large angles, the observed kinematics corresponds to the elastic scattering on the target proton of an 3 He present in the incoming 4 He, the remaining neutron being a spectator. This shows the presence of an important component of 3 He in 4 He. The integrated cross section for 3 He production is σ 3He = 24.1 ± 1.9 mb.

Elastic and inelastic scattering of 1.044 GeV protons have been studied on isotopically enriched even 40, 42, 44, 48 Ca isotopes and 48 Ti. A spin independent Glauber theory analysis of the elastic scattering allowed the extraction of neutron and nuclear matter densities for these targets.

αα elastic scattering was measured at 4.32 GeV/ c and 5.07 GeV/ c incident momenta. The four-momentum transfer range, extending from −0.05 to −0.77 (GeV/ c ) 2 , covers the first and second minimum regions. The results are compared with calculations based on Glauber theory.

A measurement of the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is presented with about 1000 neutral current deep inelastic scattering events for Bjorken x in the range x ⋍ 10 −2 – 10 −4 and Q 2 > 5 GeV 2 . The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 22.5 nb −1 recorded by the H1 detector in the first year of HERA operation. The structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) shows a significant rise with decreasing x .

Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of protons on 2 H, 3 H, 3 He and 4 He have been measured at 600 MeV. Proton-deuterium elastic scattering is investigated in a four-momentum transfer square t -range corresponding to Coulomb-nuclear interference in order to determine the nucleon-nucleon amplitudes at 600 MeV. For the other nuclei, we investigate the t -range corresponding to the first and second maximum, in order to determine the mechanism of the nuclear process. A few physical comments on the results are made.

Final results of the measurement of the analysing power A On of the p p → n n reaction are presented. Eight measurements in the range 546–1287 MeV/ c incoming p momentum have been performed over the full angular range using a solid polarized proton target and the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN antiproton extracted beams.

Total neutron cross sections have been measured for the nuclei Be, C, O, Al, V, Mn, Co, Cu, Ag, Ce, Ta, Pb, Bi and U at 22 energies from 160 MeV to 575 MeV by the transmission method. The energy region contains the threshold for pion production. Different parametrizations of the experimental results are discussed. A test of charge symmetry was obtained from the proton- and neutron-induced cross sections on C and O, yielding 〈 (σ p − σ n ) σ p 〉 = 0.0012 ± 0.0059 .
