The first study of $J/\psi\phi$ production in diffractive processes in proton-proton collisions is presented. The study is based on an LHCb dataset recorded at centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb$^{-1}$. The data disfavour a nonresonant $J/\psi\phi$ production but are consistent with a resonant model including several resonant states observed previously only in $B^+ \to J/\psi\phi K^+$ decays. The $\chi_{c0}(4500)$ state is observed with a significance over $5\sigma$ and the $\chi_{c1}(4274)$ is confirmed with a significance of more than $4\sigma$.

The first measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section at centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 5.02\,$TeV in the forward region is reported, using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment in year 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $100 \pm 2\,\rm{pb^{-1}}$. The production cross-section is measured for final-state muons in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<\eta<4.5$ with transverse momentum $p_{\rm{T}}> 20\,\rm{GeV/}\it{c}$. The integrated cross-section is determined to be \[ \sigma_{Z \rightarrow \mu^{+}\mu^{-}} = 39.6 \pm 0.7\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.6\,(\rm{syst}) \pm 0.8\,(\rm{lumi}) \ \rm{pb} \] for the di-muon invariant mass in the range $60<M_{\mu\mu}<120\,\rm{GeV/}\it{c^{2}}$. This result and the differential cross-section results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling. Based on a previous LHCb measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, the nuclear modification factor $R_{p\rm{Pb}}$ is measured for the first time at this energy. The measured values are $1.2^{+0.5}_{-0.3}\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.1\,(\rm{syst})$ in the forward region ($1.53<y^*_{\mu}<4.03$) and $3.6^{+1.6}_{-0.9}\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.2\,(\rm{syst})$ in the backward region ($-4.97<y^*_{\mu}<-2.47$), where $y^*_{\mu}$ represents the muon rapidity in the centre-of-mass frame.

The production cross-section of high-mass $\tau$-lepton pairs is measured as a function of the dilepton visible invariant mass, using 140 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement agrees with the predictions of the Standard Model. A fit to the invariant mass distribution is performed as a function of $b$-jet multiplicity, to constrain the non-resonant production of new particles described by an effective field theory or in models containing leptoquarks or $Z'$ bosons that couple preferentially to third-generation fermions. The constraints on new particles improve on previous results, and the constraints on effective operators include those affecting the anomalous magnetic moment of the $\tau$-lepton.

Differential $t\bar{t}$ cross-section measurements using boosted top quarks in the all-hadronic final state with 139 fb$^{-1}$ of ATLAS data

Measurements of single-, double-, and triple-differential cross-sections are presented for boosted top-quark pair-production in 13 $\text{TeV}$ proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The top quarks are observed through their hadronic decay and reconstructed as large-radius jets with the leading jet having transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) greater than 500 GeV. The observed data are unfolded to remove detector effects. The particle-level cross-section, multiplied by the $t\bar{t} \rightarrow W W b \bar{b}$ branching fraction and measured in a fiducial phase space defined by requiring the leading and second-leading jets to have $p_{\text{T}} > 500$ GeV and $p_{\text{T}} > 350$ GeV, respectively, is $331 \pm 3 \text{(stat.)} \pm 39 \text{(syst.)}$ fb. This is approximately 20$\%$ lower than the prediction of $398^{+48}_{-49}$ fb by Powheg+Pythia 8 with next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy but consistent within the theoretical uncertainties. Results are also presented at the parton level, where the effects of top-quark decay, parton showering, and hadronization are removed such that they can be compared with fixed-order next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) calculations. The parton-level cross-section, measured in a fiducial phase space similar to that at particle level, is $1.94 \pm 0.02 \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.25 \text{(syst.)}$ pb. This agrees with the NNLO prediction of $1.96^{+0.02}_{-0.17}$ pb. Reasonable agreement with the differential cross-sections is found for most NLO models, while the NNLO calculations are generally in better agreement with the data. The differential cross-sections are interpreted using a Standard Model effective field-theory formalism and limits are set on Wilson coefficients of several four-fermion operators.

Investigation of the Total Charm Pair Cross-section in Nonresonant $e^+ e^-$ Annihilations at $\sqrt{s}=10$.5-{GeV}

We report results from two new methods for measuring the total production of charmed particles in nonresonant e+e− annihilations at √s =10.5 GeV. The rate for detection of events containing two reconstructed charmed mesons relative to that for events containing one is used to extract information about total charm production independent of decay branching fractions. The value of ΔRcc¯, the total charm-pair cross section normalized to the pointlike μ-pair cross section, is found to be 1.13−0.13+0.17±0.09, under an assumption of limited particle correlations. In an independent analysis the inclusive cross section for e+e−→qq¯→e±X is measured to be 0.293±0.017±0.017 nb. Using measured relative production rates and semileptonic branching fractions of D0 and D+ mesons and estimates of these quantities for Ds and Λc, this is found to correspond to ΔRcc¯=2.07±0.12±0.26. These two measurements are discussed in the context of measurements made by reconstruction of exclusive hadronic decay modes and of theoretical expectations.

The depolarization parameter D NN for pp elastic scattering at θ cm = 90 ° has been measured at twelve momenta between 0.9 and 1.5 GeV/ c . The moduli of the three transversity amplitudes T 1 , T 3 , and T 4 have been extracted from these data and from previous measurements of the differential cross section and spin correlation parameter A NN (90 °). Smooth energy dependence is found for all three amplitude moduli.

Absolute differential cross-section measurements for proton deuteron elastic scattering at 641.3-MeV and 792.7-MeV

The absolute p-d elastic-scattering differential cross sections were measured at 641.3 and 792.7 MeV beam energies over a range of c.m. angles from ∼35° to ∼115° and ∼35° to ∼140°, respectively. The longitudinally polarized (L-type) proton beam produced by the Lamb-shift ion source at LAMPF was used. The beam intensity was measured to high accuracy (∼0.1%) by a scintillator-beam particle-counting system designed and developed prior to the experiment. Typical uncertainties in the absolute cross sections were about 2–3% total, somewhat larger at back angles. The present results were compared with the existing measurements and the controversy about the previous data at 800 MeV was resolved. The present data can be fit with a relativistic multiple-scattering theory which uses off-mass-shell extrapolations of the nucleon-nucleon amplitudes suggested by the structure of derivative meson-nucleon couplings. Relativistic-impulse-approximation calculations do not fit these data at either energy.

Differential cross-section for n p elastic scattering in the angular region 50-degrees < Theta* < 180-degrees at 459-MeV

The differential cross section for n-p elastic scattering at 459 MeV in the c.m. angular region 50°<θ*<180° has been measured with high statistical precision and good relative accuracy. The uncertainty in the absolute normalization (based on the simultaneously measured yield of deuterons from the np→dπ0 reaction) was initially estimated to be ∼7%. The results agree well with back-angle data obtained independently at LAMPF but less well with results from Saclay and the Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator and, except for a normalization difference of 10%, are fairly well represented by a phase-shift fit. The pole-extrapolation method of Chew was used to extract the pion-nucleon coupling constant f2 from the back-angle portion of the data. The value obtained, f2=0.069, is somewhat smaller than the values 0.0735–0.0790 obtained from analyses of pion-nucleon scattering, tending to confirm the need for an upward renormalization of the angular distribution by ∼10%.
