We report measurements of the electroproduction of single charged pions from hydrogen and deuterium targets for values of ε in the range 0.35<ε<0.45. Data were taken with a hydrogen target at the (W, Q2) points (2.15 GeV, 1.2 GeV2), (2.65, 2.0), (2.65, 3.4), (2.65, 6.0), and (2.65, 10.0). Data were taken with a deuterium target at the (W, Q2) points (2.15, 1.2) and (2.65, 2.0). The transverse cross section obtained by using these data in conjunction with earlier data at high ε to separate the longitudinal and transverse components is used in conjunction with the new data and the t-channel Born term to determine the pion form factor and to re-evaluate previously reported measurements. We report measurements of semi-inclusive pion electroproduction from both hydrogen and deuterium targets carried out at the Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory at Cornell University. Measurements were made at the (W, Q2) points (2.15 GeV, 1.2 GeV2), (2.15, 4.0), and (3.11, 1.2) with hydrogen and deuterium, and at (2.15, 2.0), (2.67, 3.3), and (3.11, 1.7) with hydrogen only. The invariant virtual-photoproduction cross section for pions scaled by the total cross section is studied as a function of x′, pT2, W, and Q2. The invariant structure function shows no Q2 dependence and a weak W dependence. The ratio of π+ to π− production is also presented, but a distinction between a universal ω or W dependence cannot be made.

We report measurements of the electroproduction of ϕ mesons from hydrogen at Q2 values of 0.23, 0.43, and 0.97 GeV2 with |t| varying from 0.125 to 1.3 GeV2 at each Q2 point. The data show no evidence for a Q2 dependence of the slope of the t distribution; the forward cross section falls with increasing Q2 as the square of the ϕ propagator; the decay angular distributions agree with the predictions of s-channel helicity conservation; and the ratio of the longitudinal to the transverse component increases linearly with Q2.

The inclusive cross section for larger p T π 0 production near 90° in p-p collisions at the CERN ISR is presented for centre-of-mass energies 30.7, 53.1 and 62.4 GeV. The data are inconsistent with scaling of the form p T − n F ( x T ), with constant n or with n allowed to depend on x T = 2p T / s . For s = 53.1 and 62.4 GeV , the value of n found for 3.5 < p T < 7.0 GeV/ c is n = 8.0 ± 0.5, in agreement with previous experiments. However, for 7.5 < p T < 14.0 GeV/ c the value becomes n = 5.1 ± 0.4.

This paper reports measurements of the hadrons produced in the inelastic scattering of 147-GeV muons by protons and deuterons in an experiment carried out at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Both the scattered muon and the hadrons were measured in a large spectrometer. Properties of the hadron spectra are presented for proton, deuteron, and neutron targets and compared with theoretical models and with hadron spectra from related processes. Emphasis is placed on the quark-parton model and the data are found to be in substantial agreement with it. The average transverse momentum of the hadrons with respect to the virtual photon direction shows no dependence on the muon scattering variables. The data display "jet behavior" of the inclusive hadrons comparable to that found in e+e− annihilations.

Measurements have been made of the inclusive scattering of 96, 147, and 219 GeV muons from hydrogen, and of 147 GeV muons from deuterium. Results are presented for the nucleon structure function F2(x,Q2) [≡νW2(x,Q2)] for 10<ν<200 GeV and 0.2

An apparatus consisting of a superconducting solenoid magnet, cylindrical drift-chambers, and two arrays of lead-glass Čerenkov counters has been used at the CERN ISR to study the production of e + e − pairs of invariant mass above 6.5 GeV/ c 2 . Cross sections for the continuum and the ϒ family of resonances are presented, as well as the mean transverse momentum 〈 p T 〉 of the electron-positron pairs in the continuum and resonance region.

Three narrow resonances have been observed in e+e− annihilation into hadrons at total energies between 9.4 and 10.4 GeV. Measurements of mass spacing and ratios of lepton pair widths support the interpretation of these "ϒ" states as the lowest triplet-S levels of the bb¯ quark-antiquark system.

As part of a study of large p T phenomena in photon-proton collisions at the CERN ISR, a search for direct single photon production has been performed. A statistical division of the data sample into the fraction consistent with single photon and the fraction due to multiphoton decays of neutral hadrons is accomplished by measuring the average conversion probability for the sample in a one radiation length thick converter. The fraction of the sample attributable to direct single photon production is 〈 γ /all〉 = 0.074 ± 0.012 for 6 GeV/ c < p T 10 GeV/ c , and 〈 γ /all〉 = 0.26 ± 0.04 for p T > 10 GeV/ c , with an additional systematic uncertainty of ±0.05 for both values.
