Photoproduction of $D~{*\pm}$ Mesons in $ep$ Collisions at HERA

At the electron-proton collider HERA the inclusive $D~{*\pm}$ meson photoproduction cross section has been measured with the H1 detector in two different, but partly overlapping, kinematical regions. For the first, where $\langle W_{\gamma p}\rangle \approx 200$\ GeV and $Q~2 < 0.01\,\gev~2$, the result is $\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c} X) = (13.2 \pm 2.2 ~{+2.1}_{-1.7}\, ~{+9.9}_{-4.8})\,\mu b$. The second measurement for $Q~2 < 4\,\gev~2$ yields $\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c} X) = ( 9.3 \pm 2.1 ~{+1.9}_{-1.8}\, ~{+6.9}_ {-3.2} )\,\mu b$ at $\langle W_{\gamma p}\rangle \approx 142$\,GeV and $\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c} X) = ( 20.6 \pm 5.5 ~ {+4.3}_{-3.9}\, ~{+15.4}_{-7.2})\,\mu b$ at $\langle W_{\gamma p} \rangle \approx 230$\,GeV, respectively. The third error accounts for an additional uncertainty due to the proton and photon parton density parametrizations. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the $D~{*\pm}$ transverse momentum and rapidity. The results compare reasonably well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Evidence for diffractive photoproduction of charm quark is presented.

Results are given on total inclusive cross sections and theA dependence, as well as on distributions in Feynman-xF, rapidityy and transverse momentum. Ratios ofKS0 and of Λ to π+ production are presented. The data are compared with predictions of the quark-parton model FRITIOF.

The inclusive production of neutral kaons is studied inK+p and π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. Total and semi-inclusive cross sections and average kaon multiplicities are presented and compared with the data at lower energies. The longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions and their energy dependence are analyzed. The results are interpreted in the framework of recent parton models.

Strange and Nonstrange Baryon Production in $\pi^+ p$ and $K^+ p$ Interactions at 250-{GeV}/$c$

We present data on the production of the baryons Λ,$\bar \Lambda $,p and of the baryon resonances Σ*+ (1385) and Δ++ (1232) inK+p and π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. Results are given on total and semi-inclusive cross sections, Feynman-x spectra, transverse momentum distributions and Λ polarization. The data are compared with measurements at lower energies, with deep inclastic lepton nucleon data and with predictions of quark-parton models. The models underestimate Λ production in the central c.m. region, a feature also seen in recent heavy-ion data. This failure can be cured in JETSET 6.3 by adjustment of the di-quark break-up probability.
