The antineutron angular distribution in the reaction p¯C→n¯X was measured at 590 MeV/c. The shape of the distribution is found to be similar to that of the elementary process p¯p→n¯n, which indicates that the quasi-free process is the dominant mechanism for p¯C→n¯X. The antineutron production cross section per bound proton in the carbon nucleus is 0.14 times that for a free proton.

Secondary beams of 3 He, 4 He, 6 He, and 8 He were produced through the projectile fragmentation of an 800 MeV/nucleon 11 B primary beam. Interaction cross sections ( σ I ) of all He isotopes of 790 MeV/nucleon on Be, C, and Al targets were measured by a transmission-type experiment. The interaction nuclear radii of He isotopes R I ( He ) = ( σ I π ) 1 2 − R I ( T ) where R I ( T ) is the radius of the target nucleus, have been deduced to be R I ( 3 He ) = 1.59 ± 0.06 fm , R I ( 4 He ) = 1.40 ± 0.05 fm , R I ( 6 He ) = 2.21 ± 0.06 fm , and R I ( 8 He ) = 2.52 ± 0.06 fm .

MEASUREMENT OF N P AND P P ASYMMETRY WITH AN ACCELERATED POLARIZED DEUTERON BEAM FROM 725-MEV TO 1000-MEV PER NUCLEON

The accelerated polarized deuteron beam of Saturn II was used to measure the analyzing power for np elastic scattering at five energies. The left-right asymmetries ε = (L + R)/(L + R) for np and for pp elastic scattering were measured simultaneously by CH 2 − carbon subtraction using one of the beam-line polarimeters. The analyzing power A 00 n 0 (np) is given by the ratio ε np d / ε pp d multiplied by the known analyzing power for pp elastic scattering. Experimental evidence is consistent with the underlying assumption that in the kinetmatic region of the experiment the ratio of the np to pp analyzing powers for scattering of quasifree nucleons in deuterons is the same as for scattering of free neutrons and protons, respectively.

CHARM PRODUCTION IN NEUTRON NUCLEON INTERACTIONS

Inspire Record 221439 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20303

Hadronic production of charmed particles in association with muons from their semileptonic decay has been observed in a high-resolution streamer-chamber experiment performed at Fermilab. A miss-distance analysis of the pictures gives a signal of 17.3±4.7 events. Depending on the production model this corresponds to a range of neutron-nucleon cross sections from 8 to 50 μb, assuming an A23 dependence.

OBSERVATION OF AN ENHANCEMENT IN ANTI-P P ---> PI+ PI- AND ANTI-P P ---> K+ K- CROSS-SECTIONS AT ANTI-P MOMENTUM OF APPROXIMATELY 500-MEV/C

The reactions p¯p→π+π− and K+K− have been studied at 390, 490, 590, 690, and 780 MeV/c. An enhancement of about 150 μb has been observed in the cross sections of both reactions at the same beam momentum of 490 MeV/c. If this structure is interpreted as a meson resonance, it has a mass of 1940 ± 20 MeV and a width of less than 40 MeV.

NEUTRAL PION PHOTOPRODUCTION ON THE DEUTERON

Large-angle cross sections for γd→π0d are systematically measured in the photon energy range between 500 and 1000 MeV. A good fit is obtained by use of a Glauber-model calculation which includes the dibaryon resonances F33(2.26) and G41(2.51), but the fit has an unusual nature in the role of resonance and nonresonance contributions.

PRIMAKOFF PRODUCTION OF THE B+ (1235) MESON

We have measured the coherent nuclear production of π+ω systems at 202.5 GeV. This final state is dominated by the B+(1235) meson with a measured mass and full width of 1.271 ± 0.011 GeV and 0.232 ± 0.029 GeV, respectively. A radiative width of 230 ± 60 keV was extracted for the process B+(1235)→π+γ.

Search for Spinless Bosons in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation

We have measured the cross sections for e + e − → e + e − , e + e − → μ + μ − , e + e − → γγ and e + e − → hadrons in an energy scan at center of mass energies between 39.79 and 46.72 GeV in 30 MeV steps. New spinless bosons, whose existence has been postulated as a possible means to explain the anomalously large radiative width of the Z 0 found at the CERN SPS p p collider, are ruled out in the scan region. The data are used to set limits on the couplings to lepton, photon and quark pairs of bosons with masses above 46.72 GeV.
