The Mark II detector at SPEAR has been used to study D-meson production in e+e− annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 3.8 and 6.7 GeV. The neutral and charged D mesons are identified from their K∓π± and K∓π±π± decay modes. Measurements of RD and of the inclusive differential cross section s dσdz are presented. The quasi-two-body cross sections σDD¯, σD*D¯, and σD*D¯* are derived from an overall fit to the D recoil spectra. No evidence was found for the associated production of charmed mesons and charmed baryons.

THE DIFFERENTIAL SCALING CROSS SECTION FOR NEUTRAL AND CHARGED D'S. DEFINITION OF Z IS 2*E(P=3)/SQRT(S).
The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the differential cross section, mean transverse momentum, mean transverse momentum squared of inclusive $J/\psi$ and cross-section ratio of $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ at forward rapidity in \pp collisions at \sqrts = 510 GeV via the dimuon decay channel. Comparison is made to inclusive $J/\psi$ cross sections measured at \sqrts = 200 GeV and 2.76--13 TeV. The result is also compared to leading-order nonrelativistic QCD calculations coupled to a color-glass-condensate description of the low-$x$ gluons in the proton at low transverse momentum ($p_T$) and to next-to-leading order nonrelativistic QCD calculations for the rest of the $p_T$ range. These calculations overestimate the data at low $p_T$. While consistent with the data within uncertainties above $\approx3$ GeV/$c$, the calculations are systematically below the data. The total cross section times the branching ratio is BR $d\sigma^{J/\psi}_{pp}/dy (1.2<|y|<2.2, 0<p_T<10~\mbox{GeV/$c$}) =$ 54.3 $\pm$ 0.5 (stat) $\pm$ 5.5 (syst) nb.

We report on a polarization measurement of inclusive $J/\psi$ mesons in the di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity at 2 $<p_{T}<$ 6 GeV/$c$ in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV. Data were taken with the STAR detector at RHIC. The $J/\psi$ polarization measurement should help to distinguish between different models of the $J/\psi$ production mechanism since they predict different $p_{T}$ dependences of the $J/\psi$ polarization. In this analysis, $J/\psi$ polarization is studied in the helicity frame. The polarization parameter $\lambda_{\theta}$ measured at RHIC becomes smaller towards high $p_{T}$, indicating more longitudinal $J/\psi$ polarization as $p_{T}$ increases. The result is compared with predictions of presently available models.

The $\jpsi$ $\pt$ spectrum and nuclear modification factor ($\raa$) are reported for $\pt < 5 \ \gevc$ and $|y|<1$ from 0\% to 60\% central Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\snn = 200 \ \gev$ at STAR. A significant suppression of $\pt$-integrated $\jpsi$ production is observed in central Au+Au events. The Cu+Cu data are consistent with no suppression, although the precision is limited by the available statistics. $\raa$ in Au+Au collisions exhibits a strong suppression at low transverse momentum and gradually increases with $\pt$. The data are compared to high-$\pt$ STAR results and previously published BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider results. Comparing with model calculations, it is found that the invariant yields at low $\pt$ are significantly above hydrodynamic flow predictions but are consistent with models that include color screening and regeneration.

The production of Λ hyperons in e+e− annihilation has been measured as a function of their total momenta, transverse momenta, and the event thrust. The total production rate is 0.213±0.012±0.018 Λ or Λ¯ per hadronic event. The observation of correlations in rapidity and angles for events with two detected Λ decays supports fragmentation models with local baryon-number compensation.

We present results on Λc+ production in 29-GeV e+e− annihilation. The Λc+ are observed via their semileptonic decays to Λe+X and Λμ+X. With radiative corrections, we find σ(e+e−→Λc+X)〉BΛc+→eΛX)= 1.5±0.6±0.5 pb or 0.0038±0.0015±0.0012 Λc+→Λe+X decay per hadronic event, and σ(e+e−Λc+X)B(Λc+→μΛX)= 1.4±1.4±0.4 pb or 0.0035±0.0035±0.0011 Λc+→Λμ+X decay per hadronic event. η production has been investigated by the Mark II collaboration at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP. η particles are reconstructed by their γγ decay mode. The η fragmentation function has been measured and found to be in good agreement with the Lund-model prediction. η′ production has been measured for the first time in high-energy e+e− annihilation. There is evidence at the 3σ level for Ds± decay into ηπ± and η′π±.

The PHENIX experiment has measured $\phi$ meson production in $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV using the dimuon and dielectron decay channels. The $\phi$ meson is measured in the forward (backward) $d$-going (Au-going) direction, $1.2<y<2.2$ ($-2.2<y<-1.2$) in the transverse-momentum ($p_T$) range from 1--7 GeV/$c$, and at midrapidity $|y|<0.35$ in the $p_T$ range below 7 GeV/$c$. The $\phi$ meson invariant yields and nuclear-modification factors as a function of $p_T$, rapidity, and centrality are reported. An enhancement of $\phi$ meson production is observed in the Au-going direction, while suppression is seen in the $d$-going direction, and no modification is observed at midrapidity relative to the yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. Similar behavior was previously observed for inclusive charged hadrons and open heavy flavor indicating similar cold-nuclear-matter effects.

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured $\phi$ meson production and its nuclear modification in asymmetric Cu$+$Au heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at both forward Cu-going direction ($1.2<y<2.2$) and backward Au-going direction ($-2.2<y<-1.2$), rapidities. The measurements are performed via the dimuon decay channel and reported as a function of the number of participating nucleons, rapidity, and transverse momentum. In the most central events, 0\%--20\% centrality, the $\phi$ meson yield integrated over $1<p_T<5$ GeV/$c$ prefers a smaller value, which means a larger nuclear modification, in the Cu-going direction compared to the Au-going direction. Additionally, the nuclear-modification factor in Cu$+$Au collisions averaged over all centrality is measured to be similar to the previous PHENIX result in $d$$+$Au collisions for these rapidities.

Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to n \pi^+$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.725 to 2.875 GeV. Where available, the results obtained here compare well with previously published results for the reaction. Agreement with the SAID and MAID analyses is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been made up to 2.7 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations. With the addition of these cross sections to the world data set, significant changes have occurred in the high-energy behavior of the SAID cross-section predictions and amplitudes.

Single π + production on protons by linearly polarized photons of 2.5 to 5 GeV was measured at squared four momentum transfers t between −0.01 and −0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results show that the differential cross section d σ ⊥ d t with the electric vector of the photon perpendicular to the reaction plane is much larger than d σ ‖ d t with the electric vector parallel to the reaction plane. The predictions of Regge models and of the vector meson dominance model are briefly discussed.

The process e + e − → π 0 + anything has been measured at c.m. energies of 14 and 34 GeV for π 0 energies between 0.5 and 4 GeV. The ratio of π 0 to π ± production for π momenta between 0.5 and 1.5 GeV/ c is measured to be 2 σ ( π 0 )/ [ σ ( π + ) + σ ( π − )] = 1.3 ± 0.4 (1.2 ± 0.4) at 14 (34) GeV. The scaled cross section ( s / μ )d σ /d x when compared with lower energy (4.9–7.4 GeV) π 0 data indicates a substantial scaling violation.

We report on a measurement of the mass of the Z 0 boson, its total width, and its partial decay widths into hadrons and leptons. On the basis of 25 801 hadronic decays and 1999 decays into electrons, muons or taus, selected over eleven energy points between 88.28 GeV and 95.04 GeV, we obtain from a combined fit to hadrons and leptons a mass of M z =91.154±0.021 (exp)±0.030 (LEP) GeV, and a total width of Γ z =2.536±0.045 GeV. The errors on M z have been separated into the experimental error and the uncertainty due to the LEP beam energy. The measured leptonic partial widths are Γ ee =81.2±2.6 MeV, Γ μμ =82.6± 5.8 MeV, and Γ ττ =85.7±7.1 MeV, consistent with lepton universality. From a fit assuming lepton universality we obtain Γ ℓ + ℓ − = 81.9±2.0 MeV. The hadronic partial width is Γ had =1838±46 MeV. From the measured total and partial widths a model independent value for the invisible width is calculated to be Γ inv =453±44 MeV. The errors quoted include both the statistical and the systematic uncertainties.
Errors are statistical and point to point systematic luminosity error of 1 pct.

We have made a detailed comparison of the charged-particle flow in three-jet events (e+e−→qq¯g) and radiative two-jet events (e+e−→qq¯γ) from e+e− annihilation at Ec.m.=29 GeV. Accurate comparisons can be made because these two event types have similar topologies. In the angular region between the quark and antiquark jets, we observe substantially fewer charged tracks in the two-jet events than in the radiative three-jet events.

A new measurement of the differential cross section and of the analysing power A 0 n of the charge-exchange reaction p − p → n − n at 875 MeV/ c is presented. We present a limit on $\nu_\mu(\overline{\nu}_\mu)\to\nu_\tau(\overline{\nu}_\tau)$ oscillations based on a study of inclusive $\nu N$ interactions performed using the CCFR massive coarse grained detector in the FNAL Tevatron Quadrupole Triplet neutrino beam. The sensitivity to oscillations is from the difference in the longitudinal energy deposition pattern of $\nu_\mu N$ versus $\nu_\tau N$ charged current interactions. The $\nu_\mu$ energies ranged from $30$ to $500$GeV with a mean of $140$GeV. The minimum and maximum $\nu_\mu$ flight lengths are $0.9$km and $1.4$km respectively. The lowest $90\%$ confidence upper limit in $\sin~22\alpha$ of $2.7\times 10~{-3}$ is obtained at $\Delta m~2\sim50$eV$~2$. This result is the most stringent limit to date for $25<\Delta m~2<90$eV$~2$.

J/ψ production on hydrogen and tungsten targets has been compared at 39.5 GeV/ c and the variation of the A -dependence of the J/ψ cross section as a function of p t 2 and x F has been measured. The A -dependence parameter, α, rises with increasing p t 2 and falls with increasing x F . Both effects are shown not to be due to the Fermi motion of nucleons in the tungsten nucleus.

A coupled channel analysis has been carried out using a new amplitude analysis of the K 0 s K 0 s system produced in the reaction π − p→K 0 s K 0 s n at 22 GeV/ c , which contained about 40 000 new events in the low- t region (| t − t min |<0.1 GeV 2 ). Here only the I G =0 + , J PC =2 ++ amplitude from this analysis is considered, together with available data from other experiments in channels with the same quantum numbers in order to determine which 2 ++ isoscalar mesons have significant pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar couplings. It is found that four poles, f(1270), f'(1525), θ(1690), and f r (1810), are needed, plus a smooth background in order to fit these data; the need for the θ(1690) depends on the J/ψ radiative decay alone, and the f r (1810) is seen only in hadronic production.

A study of the fragmentation properties of charm and bottom quarks intoD mesons is presented. The average energy fraction ofD*± in charm quark fragmentation is found to be 〈XE(D*)〉c=0.487±0.015 (stat)±0.005 (sys.). We present measurements of global event shape distributions in the hadronic decays of theZ0. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.3 pb−1, was collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. Most of the experimental distributions we present are unfolded for the finite acceptance and resolution of the OPAL detector. Through comparison with our unfolded data, we tune the parameter values of several Monte Carlo computer programs which simulate perturbative QCD and the hadronization of partons. Jetset version 7.2, Herwig version 3.4 and Ariadne version 3.1 all provide good descriptions of the experimental distributions. They in addition describe lower energy data with the parameter values adjusted at theZ0 energy. A complete second order matrix element Monte Carlo program with a modified perturbation scale is also compared to our 91 GeV data and its parameter values are adjusted. We obtained an unfolded value for the mean charged multiplicity of 21.28±0.04±0.84, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

We have determined the strong coupling αs from measurements of jet rates in hadronic decays of Z0 bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. Using six collinear and infrared safe jet algorithms we compared our data with the predictions of QCD calculated up to second order in perturbation theory, and also with resummed calculations. We find αs(MZ2)=0.118±0.002(stat)±0.003(syst)±0.010(theory), where the dominant uncertainty is from uncalculated higher order contributions.
The second systematic error comes from the theoretical uncertainties.
From an analysis of multi-hadron events from Z 0 decays, values of the strong coupling constant α s ( M 2 Z 0 )=0.131±0.006 (exp)±0.002(theor.) and α s ( M z 0 2 ) = −0.009 +0.007 (exp.) −0.002 +0.006 (theor.) are derived from the energy-energy correlation distribution and its asymmetry, respectively, assuming the QCD renormalization scale μ = M Z 0 . The theoretical error accounts for differences between O ( α 2 s ) calculations. A two parameter fit Λ MS and the renormalization scale μ leads to Λ MS =216±85 MeV and μ 2 s =0.027±0.013 or to α s ( M 2 Z 0 )=0.117 +0.006 −0.008 (exp.) for the energy-energy correlation distribution. The energy-energy correlation asymmetry distribution is insensitive to a scale change: thus the α s value quoted above for this variable includes the theoretical uncertainty associated with the renormalization scale.
Data are at the hadron level, unfolded for initial-state radiation and for detector acceptance and resolution. Note that the systematic errors between bins are correlated.

Cross sections for the continuum and the ϒ family of resonances are presented, as well as the mean transverse momentum 〈 p T 〉 of the electron-positron pairs in the continuum and resonance region.

Based on our measurement of the ratio f(π − π 0 p ) f(π + π − n ) =2.07±0.05 for antiproton annihilation at rest in liquid deuterium, we find that S-wave annihilation of the antiproton on the proton or neutron into ππ is dominant. We quote a 95% confidence level upper limit of 8% for P-wave annihilation into ππ.

We have measured the forward-backward asymmetry in Z 0 → b b decays using hadronic events containing muons and electrons. The data sample corresponds to 118 200 hadronic events at √ s ≈ M z . From a fit to the single and dilepton p and P ⊥ spectra, we determine A b b =0.130 −0.042 +0.044 including the correction for B 0 − B 0 mixing.
Observed asymmetry from fit to single and dilepton P and PT spectra assuming no mixing.
Asymmetry corrected for the effects of mixing using the L3 observed mixing parameter chi(B) = 0.178 +0.049,-0.040.
SIN2TW determined from the asymmetry measurement.
The forward-backward asymmetry of bottom quarks is measured with statistics of approximately 80 000 hadronic Z 0 decays produced in e + e − collisions at a centre of mass energy of √ s ≈ M z . The tagging of b quark events has been performed using the semileptonic decay channel b→X+ μ . Because the asymmetry depends on the weak coupling, this leads to a precise measurement of the electroweak mixing angle sin 2 θ w . The experimental result is A FB b = 0.115±0.043(stat.)±0.013(syst.). After correcting the value for the B 0 B 0 mixing this becomes A FB b =0.161±0.060(stat.)±0.021(syst.) corresponding to sin 2 θ W MS =0.221±0.011( stat. )±0.004( syst. ) .
Experimentally measured asymmetry.

A sample of 25000 Z 0 → τ + τ − events collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP in 1991 and 1992 is used to measure the leptonic branching fractions of the τ lepton. The results are B(τ → eν ν ) = (17.51 ± 0.39) % and B(τ → μν ν ) = (17.02 ± 0.31) %. The ratio of the muon and electron couplings to the weak charged current is measured to be g μ g e = 1.000 ± 0.013 , satisfying e-μ universality. The leptonic branching fraction corrected to the value for a massless lepton, assuming e-μ universality, is found to be B(τ → lν ν ) = (17.50 ± 0.25) %.
Axis error includes +- 0.23/0.23 contribution (Data statistics).
Axis error includes +- 0.19/0.19 contribution (Data statistics).
Combined from the two branching fractions above. E-MU universality assumed.
Antinucleon-nucleus annihilations into two-body final states containing only one or no meson are unusual annihilations (Pontecorvo reactions), practically unexplored experimentally, with the exception of the channel p d → π − p , for which only two low-statistics measurements exist. Their physical interest lies in the possibility of exploring small-distance nuclear dynamics, in which an important role can be played by non-nucleonic degrees of freedom. A new measurement of the p d → π − p reaction rate at rest, performed with the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR, with the best statistics up to now and a careful evaluation of systematic effects is reported, together with a critical analysis of the existing theoretical models. The measured branching ratio, which confirms the previous results, can represent a reference point for the studies in the field.

The reaction π − p → K + K − π − p at 16 GeV/ c was studied in the CERN OMEGA spectrometer and a partial-wave analysis (PWA) of the low-mass (K + K − π − ) system (1.3–2.0 GeV) was performed. Only states in the unnatural spin-parity series produced by natural parity exchange are important and they approximately conserve t -channel helicity. The 1 + S K ∗ K wave dominates the low-mass (K + K − π − ) region. We observe an enhancement in 2 − P K ∗ K wave at a mass of 1.7 GeV, consistent with the decay of the A 3 resonance.

We have measured the cross section for e + e − →hadrons over the center of mass energy range of the Z 0 peak, from 88.22 to 95.03 GeV. We determine the Z 0 mass M z =91.164±0.013 (experiment) ±0.030 (LEP) GeV. Within the framework of the standard model we determine the invisible width, Γ invisible =0.502±0.018 GeV, and the number of light neutrino species, N ν =3.01±0.11. We exclude the existence of a supersymmetric scalar neutrino having a mass less than 31.4 GeV, at the 95% confidence level. We performed a model independent combined fit to the e + e − →hadrons and e + e − → μ + μ − data to determine total width, leptonic width and hadronic width of the Z 0 .

This paper presents a study of events produced in 29-GeV electron-positron annihilation in which there are just two noncollinear charged particles, no detected photons, and two or more undetected particles. These events can be explained by attributing them primarily to the reactions e+e−→e+e−e+e− and e+e−→e+e−μ+μ− where just two particles appear in the Mark II detector. There is no evidence for unconventional sources for such events.

We have extracted the strong interaction form factors from K o e3 and K o μ3 data of our previously reported K o L experiment in a manner which does not assume an explicit q 2 = ( p K − p π ) 2 dependence. We present the unparameterized form factors ƒ + (q 2 ) from the K o L → πeν and K o L → πμν modes and ƒ o (q 2 ) and ξ ( q 2 ) from the K o L → πμν data. A comparison of these unparameterized results is made with the results of the Dalitz plot analyses.
The conventional form factor f+ is studied.
We have searched for the annihilation of e+e− into the exclusive channels e±τ∓ and μ±τ∓ at √s =29 GeV, using 226 and 133 pb−1, respectively, of data taken with the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The resulting candidate sample is compatible with the expected background from τ pair production. Our analysis yields 95%-C.L. cross-section limits of σeτ/σμμ<1.8×10−3 and σμτ/σμμ<6.1×10−3, where σμμ is the QED cross section for production of a lepton pair. This is the first high-Q2 test of lepton-flavor conservation involving τ leptons.
