In the 1992–1995 runs CDF has collected large samples of J ψ , ψ (2 S ) and ϒ identified through their muonic decay. In the charmonium system all production sources have been separately measured and compared with the theoretical predictions. A large excess of direct production has been observed for both ψ (2 S ) and J ψ . The relative production rate for the χ c 1 and χ c 2 has also been measured. The unexpected results have lead to a profound revisitation of the theory of the production of Q Q bound states in high energy hadronic collisions.

Observation of $WZ$ Production

Inspire Record 744786 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.42741

We report the first observation of the associated production of a W boson and a Z boson. This result is based on 1.1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe 16 WZ candidates passing our event selection with an expected background of 2.7 +/- 0.4 events. A fit to the missing transverse energy distribution indicates an excess of events compared to the background expectation corresponding to a significance equivalent to six standard deviations. The measured cross section is sigma(ppbar -> WZ) = 5.0^{+1.8}_{-1.6} pb, consistent with the standard model expectation.

We present measurements of the bottom-quark production cross sections in pp¯ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. From the inclusive electron production rate, we have determined the bottom-quark production cross sections to be 1010±270, 168±43, 37±10 nb for the rapidity range of ‖yb‖<1.0 and the transverse momentum ranges of pTb>15, 23, 32 GeV/c, respectively. In addition, from the associated electron-D0 production rate, we have determined the bottom-quark cross section to be 364±80(stat)±95(syst) nb for ‖yb‖<1.0 and pTb>19 GeV/c.

We present a study of J/ψ and ψ(2S) production in pp¯ collisions, at s=1.8TeV with the CDF detector at Fermilab. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their μ+μ− decay modes. We have measured the inclusive production cross section for both mesons as a function of their transverse momentum in the central region, |η|<0.6. We also measure the fraction of these events originating from b hadrons. We thus extract individual cross sections for J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons from b-quark decays and prompt production. We find a large excess (approximately a factor of 50) of direct ψ(2S) production compared with predictions from the color singlet model.

Measurement of diffractive dijet production at the Tevatron

We report the observation and measurement of the rate of diffractive dijet production at the Fermilab Tevatron p¯p collider at s=1.8TeV. In events with two jets of ET>20GeV, 1.8<|η|<3.5, and η1η2>0, we find that the diffractive to nondiffractive production ratio is RJJ=[0.75±0.05(stat)±0.09(syst)]%. By comparing this result, in combination with our measured rate for diffractive W boson production reported previously, with predictions based on a hard partonic pomeron structure, we determine the pomeron gluon fraction to be fg=0.7±0.2.

Observation of diffractive W boson production at the Tevatron

We report the first observation of diffractively produced W bosons. In a sample of W -> e nu events produced in p-barp collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, we find an excess of events with a forward rapidity gap, which is attributed to diffraction. The probability that this excess is consistent with non-diffractive production is 1.1 10^{-4} (3.8 sigma). The relatively low fraction of W+Jet events observed within this excess implies that mainly quarks from the pomeron, which mediates diffraction, participate in W production. The diffractive to non-diffractive W production ratio is found to be R_W=(1.15 +/- 0.55)%.

Inclusive J/ψ and ψ(2S) production has been studied in p¯p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV using 2.6±0.2 pb−1 of data taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The products of production cross section times branching fraction were measured as functions of PT for J/ψ→μ+μ− and ψ(2S)→μ+μ−. In the kinematic range PT>6 GeV/c and ‖η‖≤0.5 we get σ(p¯p→J/ψ X)B(J/ψ→μ+μ−) =6.88±0.23(stat)−1.08+0.93(syst) nb, and σ(p¯p→ψ(2S)X)B(ψ(2S)→μ+μ−) =0.232±0.051(stat)−0.032+0.029(syst)nb. From these values we calculate the inclusive b-quark production cross section.

Dijet production by color-singlet exchange at the Fermilab Tevatron

We report a new measurement of dijet production by color-singlet exchange in pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. In a sample of events with two jets of transverse energy ETjet>20GeV, pseudorapidity in the range 1.8<|ηjet|<3.5, and η1η2<0, we find that a fraction R=[1.13±0.12(stat)±0.11(syst)]% has a pseudorapidity gap within |η|<1 between the jets that can be attributed to color-singlet exchnage. The fraction R shows no significant dependence on ETjet or on the pseudorapidity separation between the jets.

Observation of diffractive J / psi production at the Fermilab Tevatron

We report the first observation of diffractive $J/\psi(\to \mu^+\mu^-)$ production in $\bar pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.8 TeV. Diffractive events are identified by their rapidity gap signature. In a sample of events with two muons of transverse momentum $p_T^{\mu}>2$ GeV/$c$ within the pseudorapidity region $|\eta|<$1.0, the ratio of diffractive to total $J/\psi$ production rates is found to be $R_{J/\psi}= [1.45\pm 0.25]%$. The ratio $R_{J/\psi}(x)$ is presented as a function of $x$-Bjorken. By combining it with our previously measured corresponding ratio $R_{jj}(x)$ for diffractive dijet production, we extract a value of $0.59\pm 0.15$ for the gluon fraction of the diffractive structure function of the proton.
