Inclusive measurement of diffractive deep inelastic ep scattering

A measurement is made of the cross section for the process ep --> eXY in deep-inelastic scattering with the H1 detector at HERA. The cross section is presented in terms of a differential structure function F_2^D(3)(x_P,beta,Q^2) of the proton over the kinematic range 4.5 < Q^2 < 75 GeV^2. The dependence of F_2^D(3) on x_P is found to vary with beta, demonstrating that a factorisation of F_2^D(3) with a single diffractive flux independent of beta and Q^2 is not tenable. An interpretation in which a leading diffractive exchange and a subleading reggeon contribute to F_2^D(3) reproduces well the x_P dependence of F_2^D(3) with values for the pomeron and subleading reggeon intercepts of alpha_P(0)=1.203 \pm 0.020(stat.)\pm 0.013(sys.) ^{+0.030}_{-0.035}(model} and alpha_reg(0)=0.50\pm 0.11(stat.)\pm 0.11 (sys.}^{+0.09}_{-0.10} (model), respectively. A fit is performed of the data using a QCD motivated model, in which parton distributions are assigned to the leading and subleading exchanges. In this model, the majority of the momentum of the pomeron must be carried by gluons in order for the data to be well described.

We present experimental results on measuring a single spin asymmetry in η-meson production in the interaction of transversely polarized protons and antiprotons at p lab = 200 GeV / c with a proton target in the region 0.2 < x F < 0.7 for p ↑ p , 0.3 < x F < 0.7 for p ̄ ↑p and 0.7 < p T < 2.0 GeV / c . A comparison of single spin asymmetries in π- and η-meson production is made.

The Jet pseudorapidity distribution in direct photon events in p anti-p collisions at S**(1/2) = 1.8-TeV

We present the first measurement of the jet pseudorapidity distribution in direct photon events from a sample of pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV, recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily from hard quark-gluon Compton scattering, qg→qγ, with the final state quark producing the jet of hadrons. The jet pseudorapidity distribution in this model is sensitive to parton momentum fractions between 0.015 and 0.15. We find that the shape of the measured pseudorapidity distribution agrees well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations.

Properties of jets in W boson events from 1.8-TeV anti-p p collisions

We present a study of events with W bosons and hadronic jets produced in pbar p collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data consist of 51400 W^+/- -> e^+/- nu decay candidates from 108 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF detector at the Tevatron Collider. The cross sections and jet production properties have been measured for W + \geq 1 to \geq 4 jet events. The data are compared to predictions of leading order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiation and simulated fragmentation.

Subthrehold K+ production in deuteron and alpha induced nuclear reactions.

Double differential cross sections have been measured for pi+ and K+ emitted around midraidity in d+A and He+A collisions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.15 GeV/nucleon. The total pi+ yield increases by a factor of about 2 when using an alpha projectile instead of a deuteron whereas the K+ yield increases by a factor of about 4. According to transport calculations, the K+ enhancement depends both on the number of hadron-hadron collisions and on the energy available in those collisions: their center-of-mass energy increases with increasing number of projectile nucleons.

Charged-particle multiplicities of quark and gluon jets in e+ e- annihilation at TRISTAN.

Charged-particle multiplicity was studied in e + e − annihilation at s = 57.8 GeV using the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The average multiplicity was 〈 n ch 〉 = 17.64± 0.05(stat.) ± 0.41(syst.). It was found that the multiplicity depends on the thrust ( T ) of an event. From extrapolating this relation to T = 2 3 , the multiplicity for three-fold symmetric events was estimated to be 〈n ch 〉 T = 2 3 = 23.50 −1.45 +1.25 . From this, the multiplicity ratio between gluon- and quark-jet was estimated to be r g q = 1.46 −0.13 +0.09 without any possible bias from jet clustering.

Measurement of the top quark mass and t anti-t production cross-section from dilepton events at the collider detector at Fermilab

We present an analysis of dilepton events originating from top-antitop production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 109+-7 pb^{-1}. We observe 9 candidate events, with an estimated background of 2.4+-0.5 events. We determine the mass of the top quark to be M_top = 161+-17(stat.)+-10(syst.) GeV/c^2. In addition we measure a top-antitop production cross section of 8.2+4.4-3.4 pb (where M_top = 175 GeV/c^2 has been assumed for the acceptance estimate).

Inclusive single-particle distributions and transverse momenta of forward produced charged hadrons in mu p scattering at 470-GeV

Using data from the Fermilab fixed target experiment E665, general properties of forward produced charged hadrons in μp interactions at a primary muon energy of 470 GeV are investigated. The normalized inclusive singleparticle distributions for Feynman-x D(xF ) and for the transverse momentum D(p2t , xF ) are measured as a function of W and Q2. The dependence of the average transverse momentum squared 〈p2t〉 on xF , W and Q2 is studied. The increasing contribution from diffractive production as Q2 decreases leads to a reduction of the average charged hadron multiplicities at low (positive) xF and an enhancement at large xF , for Q2 ≲ 10 GeV2. It also reduces 〈p2t〉 for Q2 ≲ 5 GeV2 and 0.4 ≲ xF < 1.0.

Spin transfer in inclusive Lambda0 production by transversely polarized protons at 200-GeV/c.

Surprisingly large polarizations in hyperon production by unpolarized protons have been known for a long time. The spin dynamics of the production process can be further investigated with polarized beams. Recently, a negative asymmetry AN was found in inclusive Λ0 production with a 200GeV/c transversely polarized proton beam. The depolarization DNN in p↑+p→Λ0+X has been measured with the same beam over a wide xF range and at moderate pT. DNN reaches positive values of about 30% at high xF and pT∼1.0GeV/c. This result shows a sizable spin transfer from the incident polarized proton to the outgoing Λ0.

Search for supersymmetry in the photon(s) plus missing energy channels at s**(1/2) = 161-GeV and 172-GeV.

Searches for supersymmetric particles in channels with one or more photons and missing energy have been performed with data collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP. The data consist of 11.1 pb-1 at $\sqrt{s} = 161 GeV$, 1.1 pb-1 at 170 GeV and 9.5 pb-1 at 172 GeV. The e+e- -> nunu+photon cross section is measured. The data are in good agreement with predictions based on the Standard Model, and are used to set upper limits on the cross sections for anomalous photon production. These limits are compared to two different SUSY models and used to set limits on the neutralino mass. A limit of 71 GeV/c^2 at 95% C.L. is set on the mass of the lightest neutralino ($\tau_{\chi_{1}^{0}} \leq $ 3 ns) for the gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking and LNZ models.
