Using data collected with the ARGUS detector, we have performed a decay angular analysis of the enhancement, previously known as the D ∗ (2420), seen in the final state D ∗ (2010) + π − . We thereby exhibit that the observed broad structure is actually due to two relatively narrow resonances, one of which is identified as the D ∗ (2459) 0 , while the massof the other is measured to be (2414±2±5) MeV/ c 2 . The results of the analysis are in good agreement with the interpretation of the two states as L =1 D mesons of spin-parities 2 + and 1 + respectively.

Using 123 multihadronic inclusive muon-production e+e− annihilation events at an average c.m. energy of 55.2 GeV, we extracted the forward-backward charge asymmetry of the e+e−→bb¯ process and the R ratio for bb¯ production. We used an analysis method in which the behavior of the c quark and lighter quarks is assumed, with only that of the b quark left indeterminate. The results, Ab=-0.72±0.28(stat)±0.13(syst) and Rb=0.57±0.16±0.10, are consistent with the standard model.

We have observed hadronic final states produced in the decays of Z bosons. In order to study the parton structure of these events, we compare the distributions in sphericity, thurst, aplanarity, and number of jets to the predictions of several QCD-based models and to data from lower energies. The data and models agree within the present statistical precision.

The reaction pp→p f ( π + π − π + π − )p s , where the π + π − π + π − system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/ c in an experiment designed to search for gluonic states. The π + π − π + π − mass spectrum shows evidence for the f 1 (1285) with a mass of 1281±1 MeV and a width of 31±5 MeV. In addition there is evidence for two new enhancements at masses of 1449±4 and 1901±13 MeV with widths of 78±18 and 312±61 MeV respectively. An analysis of the state at 1.45 GeV indicates that it is not a π + π − π + π − decay mode of the f 1 (1420) or ι η(1440) .

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e + e - storage ring at DESY, we have observed a new charmed meson of mass (2469±4±6) MeV/ c 2 , decaying to D 0 π + . This state is a strong candidate for the charged isospin partner of the D ∗ (2459) 0 . The isospin mass splitting is measured to be (14±5±8) MeV / c 2 .

The general characteristics of inelastic proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN SPS Collider are studied with the UA1 detector using magnetic and calorimetric analysis. Results are presented on charged particle multiplicities and transverse and longitudinal momenta, and on total transverse energy distributions at centre of mass energies ranging from 0.2 to 0.9 TeV.

We present data on the production of the baryons Λ,\(\bar \Lambda \),p and of the baryon resonances Σ*+ (1385) and Δ++ (1232) inK+p and π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. Results are given on total and semi-inclusive cross sections, Feynman-x spectra, transverse momentum distributions and Λ polarization. The data are compared with measurements at lower energies, with deep inclastic lepton nucleon data and with predictions of quark-parton models. The models underestimate Λ production in the central c.m. region, a feature also seen in recent heavy-ion data. This failure can be cured in JETSET 6.3 by adjustment of the di-quark break-up probability.
