Single-pion production in π−−p interactions has been studied at 905, 960, and 1100 MeV. Comparison with the isobar and one-pion-exchange (OPE) mechanisms of pion production shows that, below 1 BeV, pion production occurs primarily through the formation of an intermediate excited state of the nucleon (isobar), while at higher energies the influence of the ρ resonance in the ππ system becomes increasingly important. The total cross sections σT of p, p¯, π±, and K± on hydrogen and deuterium have been measured between 6 and 22 GeVc at intervals of 2GeVc to an accuracy greater than previously reported. The method utilized was a conventional good-geometry transmission experiment with scintillation counters subtending various solid angles at targets of liquid H2 and D2. With the increase in statistical accuracy of the data, it was found that a previously adopted procedure of linearly extrapolating to zero solid angle the partial cross sections measured at finite solid angles was not a sufficiently accurate procedure from which to deduce σT. The particle-neutron cross sections are derived by applying the Glauber screening correction to the difference between the particle-deuteron and particle-proton cross sections. The cross sections σT(π+d) and σT(π−d) are equal at all measured momenta, which confirms the validity of charge symmetry up to 20GeVc. Results are presented showing the variation of cross sections with momentum; evidence is presented for a small but significant decrease in σT(pp) [and σT(pn)] in the momentum region above 12GeVc.

The measurements of the differential cross section of elastic p-p scattering in relative units were performed in the energy range of 12–70 GeV. The values of the slope parameter were obtained from this data. It was shown that the slope parameter of the differential p-p scattering is monotonously increasing when the proton energy rises in the range 12–70 GeV. We have obtained the slope Pomeranchuk's pole trajectory from this data: α′ p = 0.40 ± 0.09.

Total cross sections of K± and p¯ on hydrogen and deuterium were measured in a standard transmission experiment with statistical precisions of the order of 0.05-0.25%. Data were obtained in the momentum range 2.45-3.30 GeV/c for K−N, 1.55-3.30 GeV/c for K+N, and 1.00-3.30 GeV/c for p¯N. Cross sections for the pure isotopic spin states are obtained using a procedure for the deuterium data which takes into account Fermi motion and the shadow effect. In a new measurement of proton total cross sections at 3.00 GeV/c, the p−d total cross section is found to be lower than a previous measurement by 1.17±0.09 mb. This implies a corresponding new value for the total cross section for I=0 which is 2.18±0.27 mb lower than the previous value. Possible sources of systematic error are discussed.

Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured over the four-momentum transfer squared 0.0007 ⩽ t ⩽ 0.02 GeV 2 /c 2 . A gas hydrogen jet has been used as an internal target of the accelerator. The results indicate that the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the proton-proton forward scattering amplitude rises smoothly with increasing energy from α = −0.35 ± 0.05 at p = 9.39 GeV/ c to α = −0.092 ± 0.011 at p = 69.8 GeV/ c .

Differential cross sections for π+p elastic scattering in the momentum region 1.2 to 2.3 GeV/c are presented for the center-of-mass angular range 0.9>cosθ>−0.9. Typically, 50 000 events were obtained at each of 16 momenta using magnetostrictive-readout wire spark chambers to detect the particles scattered from a liquid hydrogen target. The results are compared to those of the CERN-71 phase-shift analysis. The well-known dips at t≅−0.7 (GeV/c)2 and at u′=−0.2 (GeV/c)2 are observed. We report here the results from an experiment to obtain differential cross sections for K−p elastic scattering in the laboratory momentum region from 1.4 to 1.9 GeV/c. These data span the region of a bump in the K−p total cross section at an energy of 2.05 GeV. Approximately 20000 elastic events were obtained at each of four momenta with an angular coverage of 0.9≥cosθc.m.≥−0.9. The data are intended to aid in phase-shift analyses of the resonances causing the bump in the total cross section and to study dip structures at constant values of the Mandelstam variables t and u.

We present results from a study of high-momentum inclusive hadron production in electron-positron interactions at s=3.8 and 4.8 GeV. Comparison of the momentum spectra at these energies shows no scaling violation in the region x(=EEbeam)>0.7. At s=4.8 GeV the Kπ ratio for hadrons with momenta >1.1 GeV/c is 0.27±0.08, and the average number of charged hadrons is 3.6±0.3 for those events which have at least one charged hadron with momentum greater than 1.1 GeV/c.

In view of the possible production of heavy leptons or charmed states in e+e− collisions, we searched for anomalous muons with momenta pμ≳1 GeV/c. The inclusive cross section for nch>~3 has an upper limit of 96 pb (assuming isotropy). For nch=2 and noncoplanarity > 20°, an excess of muonic events is observed, corresponding to (dσdΩ)|90°=23−9+12 pb/sr; the probability that known processes produce the observed events is 2×10−4.

We have studied muon-produced hadrons from a deuterium target. The structure functions and the charge ratios are reported for neutrons; the transverse momentum and azimuthal distributions are reported for deuterons. The structure function for the neutron is similar to that of the proton. The charge ratio of produced hadrons follows the expectation of a simple spin-½ quark model. Transverse-momentum results agree with those at lower energy and are similar to those from hadron-hadron interactions. No azimuthal anisotropy is seen.

At a square of the momentum transfer of 1.0 (GeV/c)2 the elastic scattering of electrons on deuterons has been measured at electron scattering angles of 8°, 60°, and 82°. From these data we have extracted a value of B(q2)=(0.59±1.20)×10−5 for the deuteron. This measurements extends the range in momentum transfer by almost a factor of 2 over the previous measurements.

We report the results of a pion-electron scattering experiment to measure the charge radius of the pion. The experiment was performed in a 50 GeV/ c negative, unseparated beam at the IHEP accelerator, Serpukhov, and has been briefly reported in an earlier publication [1]. A magnetic spectrometer instrumented with wire spark chambers was used to record the incident pion trajectory and the angles and momenta of the scattered particles. Events are reconstructed by detailed trackfinding programs, and a set of kinematic and geometric cuts define the elastic sample. Electrons are identified both by kinematic criteria and pulse height information from total absorption lead glass Čerenkov counters. The final elastic sample consisted of 40 000 πe events in the region of four-momentum transfer squared 0.013 (GeV/ c ) 2 ⩽ q 2 ⩽ 0.036 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A full error matrix fit to the form factors of the pion gave the r.m.s. charge radius of the pion: 〈r π 2 〉 1 2 = (0.78 −0.10 +0.09 ) fm .

The production of neutral kaons in the reaction K + p → K n + X is studied at the incident momentum of 32 GeV/ c . Inclusive cross sections and single-particle distributions are presented and compared with the data at lower energies. The total inclusive cross section amounts to 7.9 ± 0.3 mb at 32 GeV/ c and is significantly higher than at lower energies due to the rapid rise of multikaon production. The fraction of K n 's coming from the decay of the K ∗ resonances stays roughly constant with energy between 8.2 and 32 GeV/ c . In the central and beam fragmentation regions the single-particle distributions reveal no energy dependence between the 16 and 32 GeV/ c data in contrast with the behaviour at lower energies, while in the proton fragmentation region the data are compatible with the trend observed at lower energies and with theoretical expectations.

A study of the inclusive and semi-inclusive Λ and Λ production in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c is presented. The inclusive cross sections for Λ and Λ amount to 0.78 ± 0.05 and 0.42 ± 0.04 mb thus showing a remarkable growth between 16 and 32 GeV/ c with a factor of 1.7 for Λ and 2.8 for Λ . Target and beam fragmentation processes are found to be dominant for Λ and Λ production respectively with the following lower limits for the corresponding cross sections: σ(p → K + ʌ) > 0.5 mb and σ(K + → p ʌ ) > 0.3 mb . Although the early scaling conditions are fulfilled for the Λ production in the target fragmentation region, and Λ production in the beam fragmentation region, scaling is not observed between 16 and 32 GeV/ c in the x and p T 2 Feynman variables. The Λ production is found to be very similar in the K + p inclusive reaction at 32 GeV/ c and in the semi-inclusive reaction K − p → Λ K K X at the same energy. The Λ Λ pair production cross section increases significantly in K + p interactions from 16 to 32 GeV/ c where it reaches the value σ Λ Λ = 47 ± 11 μ b . The cross sections for Λ or Λ produced in association with an identified proton are also given and discussed.

We present results on charged multiplicity nch=2 and nch>2 muon events produced in e+e− collisions with 〈s12〉=7.3 GeV at 90° to the beams. The background-subtracted inclusive cross section for the nch=2 events is 10.2±5.4 pb/sr, in agreement with the expected contribution from the heavy lepton τ. The cross section for the nch>2 events is 19.0±6.5 pb/sr whereas we expect only 2.9 pb/sr from the τ, indicating that we may be seeing the weak decays of charmed mesons.

We present a partial wave amplitude analysis of the differential cross sections for p̄p → π 0 π 0 at 25 energies from 2.12 to 2.43 GeV. The results suggest the presence of a J PC I G = 2 ++ 0 + resonance at 2.15 GeV. An isospin decomposition of p̄p → π + π - is also presented.

This paper reports measurements of the hadrons produced in the inelastic scattering of 147-GeV muons by protons and deuterons in an experiment carried out at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Both the scattered muon and the hadrons were measured in a large spectrometer. Properties of the hadron spectra are presented for proton, deuteron, and neutron targets and compared with theoretical models and with hadron spectra from related processes. Emphasis is placed on the quark-parton model and the data are found to be in substantial agreement with it. The average transverse momentum of the hadrons with respect to the virtual photon direction shows no dependence on the muon scattering variables. The data display "jet behavior" of the inclusive hadrons comparable to that found in e+e− annihilations.

RADIATIVE CORRECTIONS APPLIED.
Measurements have been made of the inclusive scattering of 96, 147, and 219 GeV muons from hydrogen, and of 147 GeV muons from deuterium. Results are presented for the nucleon structure function F2(x,Q2) [≡νW2(x,Q2)] for 10<ν<200 GeV and 0.2<Q2<80 GeV2. The value of F2 rises with Q2 at small x, and falls with Q2 at large x, in agreement with the ideas of quantum chromodynamics. An average value of the ratio σLσT≡R=0.52±0.35 has been obtained for the region 0.003<x<0.10 and 0.4<Q2<30 GeV2. The values of F2 from this experiment have been combined with those from other charged-lepton scattering experiments to determine moments of the structure functions. The variation with Q2 of these moments is used to derive values for Λ, taking into account corrections up to second order in αs. The fit to the data is very good.
