A search for charm production in the coherent diffractive dissociation reaction pSi→XSi was carried out for the modes D 0 → K − π + , D 0 → K − π + π + π − , and D + → K − π + π + . No charm signals were observed, and the 90% confidence level upper limit for coherent charm pair production was determined to be 26 μ b per silicon nucleus. The results are interpreted as an upper limit of 0.2% on the amount of intrinsic charm in the proton.

Pi- p backward elastic scattering from 2.38 to 3.00 gev/c

This paper presents differential cross sections for backward π−p elastic scattering in the angular region −0.55≥cosθc.m.≥−0.98 for five incident momenta: 2.38, 2.50, 2.65, 2.80, and 3.00 GeV/c. The structure of the angular distribution undergoes a marked change over this momentum interval. A pronounced dip near 180°, which is seen for momenta ≲2.50 GeV/c, becomes a sharp peak at 2.80 and 3.00 GeV/c. A minimum in the cross section at cosθc.m.≃−0.7 is indicated at all momenta. In addition, a dip in the differential cross section appears at cosθc.m.≃−0.92 at 3.00 GeV/c. A good fit to the data from 2.1 to 3.0 GeV/c is obtained with a direct-channel resonance model.

Backward pi+ p elastic scattering from 2.18 to 5.25 gev/c

Differential cross sections are presented for pion-proton elastic scattering in the angular range −0.6≳cosθc.m.≳−0.98 at 15 incident π+ momenta from 2.18−5.25 GeVc. The angular distributions rise steeply near 180° at all momenta. For laboratory momenta ≳2.75 GeVc they show a minimum at u≈−0.17 (GeVc)2 and a broad maximum near u≈−0.6 (GeVc)2. When the data are plotted versus s, for fixed u, a strong signal from the Δ(2420) resonance is observed. The data are compared with a direct-channel resonance model and with a Regge model which considers the exchange of the Nα, Nγ, and Δδ Regge trajectories. The qualitative success of both the direct-channel resonance model and the Regge model lends support to the concept of duality.

Observation of color-transparency in diffractive dissociation of pions.

We have studied the diffractive dissociation into di-jets of 500 GeV/c pions scattering coherently from carbon and platinum targets. Extrapolating to asymptotically high energies (where t_{min} approaches 0) we find that when the per-nucleus cross-section for this process is parameterized as $ \sigma = \sigma_0 A^{\alpha} $, $ \alpha $ has values near 1.6, the exact result depending on jet transverse momentum. These values are in agreement with those predicted by theoretical calculations of color-transparency.

We have measured dσ du for π − p elastic scattering at 3 and 4 GeV c in the ranges −0.119⩽ u ⩽0.113 and −0.233⩽ u ⩽0.088, respectively. A fit of the form d σ /d u = A exp ( Bu + Cu 2 ) gives B = 4.34±0.42 and C = 7.0±3.5 at 4 GeV c with χ 2 = 5.7 for 9 degrees of freedom; the simpler form d σ /d u = A exp( Bu ) gives B = 3.7 ± 0.3 with χ 2 = 9.6. At 3 GeV c we confirm with high statistics the structures already observed.

We have studied the reactions K − p → K − π + π − p and K − p → K 0 π − π 0 p at 14.3 GeV/ c using respectively 15 992 and 3723 events. Partial-wave analysis of the region 1.0 < m (K ππ ) < 1.7 GeV have been made using a modified version of the method developed at the University of Illinois.

Some Three-Body Final States in K- p Reactions at 14.3-GeV/c

We present experimental results on a number of K − p reactions at 14.3 GeV/ c that have three bodies in the final state. The final states are K − ω p , K − π p , Λπ + π − , Λ K + K − , Λp p , K ∗ − ω p , Λ(1520) K + K − and Λ(1520) p p . Whenever, with one exception explained by the Zweig rule, there is a K − or a proton in the final state, there is a diffractive-like threshold enhancement in the mass spectrum of the two recoiling particles. These enhancements account for a large fraction of the events in all but the Λπ + π − final state, where they cannot occur, and which is dominated by resonance production. We find evidence for the Q 1 (1300) decaying into K − ω .

Prism plot - a new analysis of multibody final states

We present a new technique for analyzing multibody states. This analysis makes possible the selection of samples of events that contain only resonances, particle correlations, or phase space. A unique feature of this analysis is that every event in the data is assigned to a particular sample. The three-body final state π++p→p+π++π0 is analyzed as an example.
