The central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is examined, based on data collected in a special high-$\beta^*$ run of the LHC. The nonresonant continuum processes are studied with the invariant mass of the centrally produced two-pion system in the resonance-free region, $m_{\pi^+\pi^-}$$\lt$ 0.7 GeV or $m_{\pi^+\pi^-}$$\gt$ 1.8 GeV. Differential cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the surviving protons, squared exchanged four-momenta, and $m_{\pi^+\pi^-}$ are measured in a wide region of scattered proton transverse momenta, between 0.2 and 0.8 GeV, and for pion rapidities $\lvert y\rvert$$\lt$ 2. A rich structure of interactions related to double-pomeron exchange is observed. A parabolic minimum in the distribution of the two-proton azimuthal angle is observed for the first time. It can be interpreted as an effect of additional pomeron exchanges between the protons from the interference between the bare and the rescattered amplitudes. After model tuning, various physical quantities are determined that are related to the pomeron cross section, proton-pomeron and meson-pomeron form factors, pomeron trajectory and intercept, and coefficients of diffractive eigenstates of the proton.

Study of WH production through vector boson scattering and extraction of the relative sign of the W and Z couplings to the Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Inspire Record 2790366 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.151278

A search for the production of a W boson and a Higgs boson through vector boson scattering (VBS) is presented, using CMS data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected from 2016 to 2018. The integrated luminosity of the data sample is 138 fb$^{-1}$. Selected events must be consistent with the presence of two jets originating from VBS, the leptonic decay of the W boson to an electron or muon, possibly also through an intermediate $\tau$ lepton, and a Higgs boson decaying into a pair of b quarks, reconstructed as either a single merged jet or two resolved jets. A measurement of the process as predicted by the standard model (SM) is performed alongside a study of beyond-the-SM (BSM) scenarios. The SM analysis sets an observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit of 14.3 (9.9) on the ratio of the measured VBS WH cross section to that expected by the SM. The BSM analysis, conducted within the so-called $\kappa$ framework, excludes all scenarios with $\lambda_\mathrm{WZ}$ $\lt$ 0 that are consistent with current measurements, where $\lambda_\mathrm{WZ}$ = $\kappa_\mathrm{W} / \kappa_\mathrm{Z}$ and $\kappa_\mathrm{W}$ and $\kappa_\mathrm{Z}$ are the HWW and HZZ coupling modifiers, respectively. The signficance of the exclusion is beyond 5 standard deviations, and it is consistent with the SM expectation of $\lambda_\mathrm{WZ}$ = 1.

A search for pair production of scalar and vector leptoquarks (LQs) each decaying to a muon and a bottom quark is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. No excess above standard model expectation is observed. Scalar (vector) LQs with masses less than 1810 (2120) GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a 100% branching fraction of the LQ decaying to a muon and a bottom quark. These limits represent the most stringent to date.

Nuclear medium effects on B$^+$ meson production are studied using the binary-collision scaled cross section ratio between events of different charged-particle multiplicities from proton-lead collisions. Data, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb$^{-1}$, were used. The scaling factors in the ratio are determined using a novel approach based on the Z $\to$$\mu^+\mu^-$ cross sections measured in the same events. The scaled ratio for B$^+$ is consistent with unity for all event multiplicities, putting stringent constraints on nuclear modification for heavy flavor.

A search is presented for an extended Higgs sector with two new particles, X and $\phi$, in the process $X \to\phi\phi\to(\gamma\gamma)(\gamma\gamma)$. Novel neural networks classify events with diphotons that are merged and determine the diphoton masses. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. No evidence of such resonances is seen. Upper limits are set on the production cross section for $m_X$ between 300 and 3000 GeV and $m_\phi / m_X$ between 0.5 and 2.5%, representing the most sensitive search in this channel.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass and width via its decay to two Z bosons is presented. Proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is used. The invariant mass distribution of four leptons in the on-shell Higgs boson decay is used to measure its mass and constrain its width. This yields the most precise single measurement of the Higgs boson mass to date, 125.04 $\pm$ 0.12 GeV, and an upper limit on the width $\Gamma_\mathrm{H}$$\lt$ 330 MeV at 95% confidence level. A combination of the on- and off-shell Higgs boson production decaying to four leptons is used to determine the Higgs boson width, assuming that no new virtual particles affect the production, a premise that is tested by adding new heavy particles in the gluon fusion loop model. This result is combined with a previous CMS analysis of the off-shell Higgs boson production with decay to two leptons and two neutrinos, giving a measured Higgs boson width of 3.0 $^{+2.0}_{-1.5}$ MeV, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 4.1 MeV. The strength of the off-shell Higgs boson production is also reported. The scenario of no off-shell Higgs boson production is excluded at a confidence level corresponding to 3.8 standard deviations.

Measurements of fiducial and total inclusive cross sections for W and Z boson production are presented in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV. Electron and muon decay modes ($\ell$ = e or $\mu$) are studied in the data collected with the CMS detector in 2017, in dedicated runs with reduced instantaneous luminosity. The data sets correspond to integrated luminosities of 298 $\pm$ 6 pb$^{-1}$ at 5.02 TeV and 206 $\pm$ 5 pb$^{-1}$ at 13 TeV. Measured values of the products of the total inclusive cross sections and the branching fractions at 5.02 TeV are $\sigma$(pp $\to$ W+X) $\mathcal{B}$(W $\to$$\ell\nu$) = 7300 $\pm$ 10 (stat) $\pm$ 60 (syst) $\pm$ 140 (lumi) pb, and $\sigma$(pp $\to$ Z+X) $\mathcal{B}$(Z $\to$$\ell^+\ell^-$) = 669 $\pm$ 2 (stat) $\pm$ 6 (syst) $\pm$ 13 (lumi) pb for the dilepton invariant mass in the range of 60-120 GeV. The corresponding results at 13 TeV are 20480 $\pm$ 10 (stat) $\pm$ 170 (syst) $\pm$ 470 (lumi) pb and 1952 $\pm$ 4 (stat) $\pm$ 18 (syst) $\pm$ 45 (lumi) pb. The measured values agree with cross section calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Fiducial and total inclusive cross sections, ratios of cross sections of W$^+$ and W$^-$ production as well as inclusive W and Z boson production, and ratios of these measurements at 5.02 and 13 TeV are reported.

Searches for pair-produced multijet signatures using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 128 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV are presented. A data scouting technique is employed to record events with low jet scalar transverse momentum sum values. The electroweak production of particles predicted in $R$-parity violating supersymmetric models is probed for the first time with fully hadronic final states. This is the first search for prompt hadronically decaying mass-degenerate higgsinos, and extends current exclusions on $R$-parity violating top squarks and gluinos.

Bottom quark energy loss and hadronization with B$^+$ and B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ nuclear modification factors using pp and \PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production cross sections of B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ and B$^+$ mesons are reported in proton-proton (pp) collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb$^{-1}$. The cross sections are based on measurements of the B$^0_\mathrm{s}$$\to$ J/$ψ(μ^+μ^-)ϕ$(1020) (K$^+$K$^-$) and B$^+$$\to$ J/$ψ(μ^+μ^-)$K$^+$ decay channels. Results are presented in the transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) range 7-50 GeV/$c$ and the rapidity interval $\lvert y \rvert$$\lt$ 2.4 for the B mesons. The measured $p_\mathrm{T}$-differential cross sections of B$^+$ and B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ in pp collisions are well described by fixed-order plus next-to-leading logarithm perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Using previous PbPb collision measurements at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy, the nuclear modification factors, $R_\mathrm{AA}$, of the B mesons are determined. For $p_\mathrm{T}$$\lt$ 10 GeV/$c$, both mesons are found to be suppressed in PbPb collisions (with $R_\mathrm{AA}$ values significantly below unity), with less suppression observed for the B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ mesons. In this $p_\mathrm{T}$ range, the $R_\mathrm{AA}$ values for the B$^+$ mesons are consistent with those for inclusive charged hadrons and D$^0$ mesons. Below 10 GeV/$c$, both B$^+$ and B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ are found to be less suppressed than either inclusive charged hadrons or D$^0$ mesons, with the B$^0_\mathrm{s}$$R_\mathrm{AA}$ value consistent with unity. The $R_\mathrm{AA}$ values found for the B$^+$ and B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ are compared to theoretical calculations, providing constraints on the mechanism of bottom quark energy loss and hadronization in the quark-gluon plasma, the hot and dense matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.

Search for long-lived particles using displaced vertices and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Inspire Record 2761908 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.147272

A search for the production of long-lived particles in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC is presented. The search is based on data collected by the CMS experiment in 2016-2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$. This search is designed to be sensitive to long-lived particles with mean proper decay lengths between 0.1 and 1000 mm, whose decay products produce a final state with at least one displaced vertex and missing transverse momentum. A machine learning algorithm, which improves the background rejection power by more than an order of magnitude, is applied to improve the sensitivity. The observation is consistent with the standard model background prediction, and the results are used to constrain split supersymmetry (SUSY) and gauge-mediated SUSY breaking models with different gluino mean proper decay lengths and masses. This search is the first CMS search that shows sensitivity to hadronically decaying long-lived particles from signals with mass differences between the gluino and neutralino below 100 GeV. It sets the most stringent limits to date for split-SUSY models and gauge-mediated SUSY breaking models with gluino proper decay length less than 6 mm.
