Studies of Jet Production Rates in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at $e$({CM}) = 29-{GeV}

Production rates of multijet hadronic final states are studied ine+e− annihilation at 29 GeV center of mass energy. QCD shower model calculations with exact first order matrix element weighting at the first gluon vertex are capable of reproducing the observed multijet event rates over a large range of jet pair masses. The method used to reconstruct jets is well suited for directly comparing experimental jet rates with parton rates calculated in perturbative QCD. Evidence for the energy dependene of αs is obtained by comparing the observed production rates of 3-jet events with results of similar studies performed at higher center of mass energies.

MEASUREMENT OF THE XI- P ELASTIC CROSS-SECTION AT 102-GEV/C AND 135-GEV/C

TheΞ-p differential elastic cross section has been measured in the SPS hyperon beam at 102 and 135 GeV/c. In the range 0.01<−<0.42(GeV/c)2, thet distributions are found to be compatible with the formA exp(Bt) whereB is 7.7±0.4(GeV/c)−2 at 102 GeV/c and 8.2 ±0.5(GeV/c)−2 at 135 GeV/c. The corresponding total elastic cross sections areσel=4.9±0.7 mb andσel=5.6±0.9 mb, respectively. These results are compared with the predictions of phenomenological models.

Vector-meson electroproduction at high q-squared

We have measured ρ0, ω (combined) and ϕ electroproduction over a range of virtual-photon four-momentum Q2 from 0.4 to 2.2 GeV2 and for photon energies ν from 2.7 to 8.6 GeV. We find that the slope of the t (momentum transfer) dependence of the ρ0 and ω forward peak decreases with increasing Q2 to less than half of the photoproduction slope.

LARGE ANGLE PROTON AND PION PRODUCTION IN DEEP INELASTIC ELECTRON SCATTERING

We have measured ep, eπ+, and eπ− coincidences for scattered electrons in the range Q2=0.4 to 2.2 GeV2 and W=2 to 4 GeV. We find (a) that vector-meson production decreases with Q2 more rapidly than does the total virtual-photon-plus-proton cross section, more rapidly even than the prediction of simple vector dominance, (b) that the slope of the t distribution in ρ and ω production becomes flatter with increasing Q2 and seems to be at least approximately a function of the single variable xρ=(Q2+mρ2)2Mν, (c) that the fraction of final states containing a proton decreases with increasing Q2, (d) that in the central region of longitudinal momenta the inclusive π+ yield seems to increase relative to the π− yield as Q2 increases, and (e) that the average transverse momentum of π− is greater than of π+ in the central region of longitudinal momenta.

Results are presented of measurements of the polarisation parameter for the reaction π−p→π°n : π°→γγ at 22 incident momenta in the resonance region. These results are generally in agreement with those of previous measurements and in qualitative agreement with predictions of phase shift analyses.

Production of the D(s)+- by High-Energy Neutrons

We have observed the production of the Ds± by a high-energy neutron beam on nuclear targets. The Ds± was observed in the decay mode Ds±→φπ±, φ→K+K−. The average of the inclusive cross sections for Ds+ and Ds− hadroproduction is measured to be BdσdxF=2.85±0.80±0.86 μb/nucleon at xF=0.175 on the assumption of a linear A dependence, where B≡Γ(Ds±→φπ±)Γ(Ds±→all).
