We report results on a precision measurement of the ratio R=σLσT in deep inelastic electron-nucleon scattering in the kinematic range 0.2≤x≤0.5 and 1≤Q2≤10 (GeV/c)2. Our results show, for the first time, a clear falloff of R with increasing Q2. Our R results are in agreement with QCD predictions only when corrections for target mass effects and some additional higher twist effects are included. At small x, the data on R favor structure functions with a large gluon contribution. We also report results on the differences RA−RD and the cross section ratio σAσD between Fe and Au nuclei and the deuteron. Our results for RA−RD are consistent with zero for all x, Q2 indicating that possible contributions to R from nuclear higher twist effects and spin-0 constituents in nuclei are not different from those in nucleons. The ratios σAσD from all recent experiments, at all x, Q2 values, are now in agreement.

The H1 collaboration Abt, I. ; Ahmed, T. ; Andreev, V. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 407 (1993) 515-538, 1993.
Inspire Record 357797 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.37121

A measurement of the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is presented with about 1000 neutral current deep inelastic scattering events for Bjorken x in the range x ⋍ 10 −2 – 10 −4 and Q 2 > 5 GeV 2 . The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 22.5 nb −1 recorded by the H1 detector in the first year of HERA operation. The structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) shows a significant rise with decreasing x .

We present a new determination of the nonsinglet structure function ${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{p}}$ - ${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{n}}$ at ${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$=4 ${\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$ using recently measured values of ${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{d}}$ and ${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{n}}$/${\mathit{F}}_{2}^{\mathit{p}}$. A new evaluation of the Gottfried sum is given, which remains below the simple quark-parton model value of 1/3.

A Measurement of the ratio of the nucleon structure function in copper and deuterium

The European Muon collaboration Ashman, J. ; Badelek, B. ; Baum, G. ; et al.
Z.Phys.C 57 (1993) 211-218, 1993.
Inspire Record 341575 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.14499

Results are presented on the ratios of the nucleon structure function in copper to deuterium from two separate experiments. The data confirm that the nucleon structure function,F2, is different for bound nucleons than for the quasi-free ones in the deuteron. The redistribution in the fraction of the nucleon's momentum carried by quarks is investigated and it is found that the data are compatible with no integral loss of quark momenta due to nuclear effects.

Proton and deuteron f2 structure functions in deep inelastic muon scattering

Phys.Lett.B 295 (1992) 159-168, 1992.
Inspire Record 338074 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29003

The structure functions F p 2 and F d 2 measured by deep inelastic muon scattering at incident energies of 90 and 280 GeV are presented. These measurements cover a large kinematic range, 0.006⩽ x ⩽0.6 and 0.5⩽ Q 2 ⩽55GeV 2 , and include the first precise data at small x , where large scaling violations are observed. The data agree with earlier results from SLAC and BCDMS but exhibit differences with respect to those of EMC-NA2. Extrapolations to small x of recent phenomenological parton distributions are shown to disagree with the present results.

The ratio F2(n) / F2(p) in deep inelastic muon scattering

The New Muon collaboration Amaudruz, P. ; Arneodo, M. ; Arvidson, A. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 371 (1992) 3-31, 1992.
Inspire Record 321412 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.32955

Results are presented on the ratio of neutron and proton structure functions, F 2 n / F 2 p , deduced from deep inelastic scattering of muon from hydrogen and deuterium. The data, which were obtained at the CERN muon beam at 90 and 280 GeV incident energy, cover the kinematic range x = 0.002−0.80 and Q 2 = 0.1−190 GeV 2 . The measured structure function ratios have small statistical and systematic errors, particularly at small and intermediate x . The observed Q 2 dependence in the range x = 0.1−0.4 is stronger than predicted by perturbative QCD. From the present data together with results from other experiments it is suggested that the twist-four coefficient for the proton is smaller than that for the neutron for x larger than 0.2.

The ratio of the structure function F 2 n / F 2 p ( x ) has been measured in deep inelastic scattering of 274 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets exposed simultaneously to the beam. The results were obtained from 0.3 (0.6) million events from hydrogen (deuterium) in the range 0.004 < x < 0.8 and 1 < Q 2 < 190 GeV 2 . At x < 0.25 both the statistical and the systematic error is below 2%. Implications for parton distributions and for the σ w / σ z production cross section ratio in p p collisions are discussed. When compared to other results obtained at lower energies, the data indicate a Q 2 dependence of the ratio.
