About 100 000 pictures, with an average of ∼12K + per picture, taken in the 81 cm Saclay deuterium bubble chamber exposed to a separated 3 GeV/c K + beam have been analysed for the reaction K + d→K 0 pp in the 1-prong V 0 and 2-prong V 0 topologies. 214 such events have been found allowing a determination of the differential cross-section. A comparison with the prediction of Rarita and Schwarzschild yields reasonable agreement; in particular a large real part is inferred for the amplitude for the reaction K + n→K 0 p.

Inclusive K 0 -production has been measured in e + e - annihilation at a center of mass energy of about W = 30 GeV. The ratio of K 0 + K 0 production to μ + μ - production is R K 0 = 5.6 ± 1.1 (statist. error) ± 0.8 (system.error) This value is about a factor of three higher than R K 0 at W = 7 GeV. The cross sections ( s / β ) d σ /d x is consistent with a scaling behaviour.

We have searched for resonance production in the reaction γγ→Ks0Kπ. No signal was found for theηc and an upper limit for the radiative with\(\Gamma _{\gamma \gamma }^{\eta _c } \) keV (95% c.l.) is obtained. For the glueball candidate η(1440) (previouslyi) the upper limit\(\Gamma _{\gamma \gamma }^{\eta (1440)} B(\eta (1440) \to K\bar K\pi )< 1.2keV(95\% c.l.)\) is derived. In the tagged data sample resonance formation of a spin 1 state at 1420 MeV is observed, which is absent in the untagged data. The mass and width of this state are consistent with those of thef1(1420); an analysis of decay angular distributions favours positive parity.

The production of Λ hyperons in e+e− annihilation has been measured as a function of their total momenta, transverse momenta, and the event thrust. The total production rate is 0.213±0.012±0.018 Λ or Λ¯ per hadronic event. The observation of correlations in rapidity and angles for events with two detected Λ decays supports fragmentation models with local baryon-number compensation.

This paper presents measurements of the inclusive production cross sections of Λ baryons in e+e− annihilations at s=29 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 256 pb−1 collected with the High-Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC storage ring PEP. Comparisons are made to the predictions of the Lund model. The data are well described with use of a strange-diquark suppression parameter, (usud)(sd), of 0.89 ± 0.10−0.16+0.56, and the measured Λc→Λ+X branching ratio of (23 ± 10)%.

The result of a feasibility study to measure the Λ polarization in associated K + – Λ electro-production is presented. This measurement was performed in the experimental Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The scattered electron was detected in the HMS spectrometer, and the electro-produced kaon and the proton from the Λ → pπ − decay were both detected in the SOS spectrometer. This quantity is very sensitive to the elementary p ( e , e ′ K ) Λ process and gives information on resonance production, and Regge exchange, among others. The result presented was measured at Q 2 =1.50 (GeV/c) 2 and cos θ Kγ CM =14°. The limits of the Λ polarization, with respect to the p γ × p K axis, were found to be −0.21 and +0.89 with a confidence level of 68%. The result is compared to theoretical predictions based on an effective hadronic field Lagrangian model and a Regge framework model.

We present results on Λc+ production in 29-GeV e+e− annihilation. The Λc+ are observed via their semileptonic decays to Λe+X and Λμ+X. With radiative corrections, we find σ(e+e−→Λc+X)〉BΛc+→eΛX)= 1.5±0.6±0.5 pb or 0.0038±0.0015±0.0012 Λc+→Λe+X decay per hadronic event, and σ(e+e−Λc+X)B(Λc+→μΛX)= 1.4±1.4±0.4 pb or 0.0035±0.0035±0.0011 Λc+→Λμ+X decay per hadronic event. These results can be used to place constraints on the predictions of various production models.

η production has been investigated by the Mark II collaboration at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP. η particles are reconstructed by their γγ decay mode. The differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of π+, π−, K+, K−, p, and p¯ on protons have been measured in the t interval -0.04 to -0.75 GeV2 at five momenta: 50, 70, 100, 140, and 175 GeV/c. The t distributions have been parametrized by the quadratic exponential form dσdt=Aexp(B|t|+C|t|2) and the energy dependence has been described in terms of a single-pole Regge model. The pp and K+p diffraction peaks are found to shrink with α′∼0.20 and ∼0.15 GeV−2, respectively. The p¯p diffraction peak is antishrinking while π±p and K−p are relatively energy-independent. Total elastic cross sections are calculated by integrating the differential cross sections. The rapid decline in σel observed at low energies has stopped and all six reactions approach relatively constant values of σel. The ratio of σelσtot approaches a constant value for all six reactions by 100 GeV, consistent with the predictions of the geometric-scaling hypothesis. This ratio is ∼0.18 for pp and p¯p, and ∼0.12-0.14 for π±p and K±p. A crossover is observed between K+p and K−p scattering at |t|∼0.19 GeV2, and between pp and p¯p at |t|∼0.11 GeV2. Inversion of the cross sections into impact-parameter space shows that protons are quite transparent to mesons even in head-on collisions. The probability for a meson to pass through a proton head-on without interaction inelastically is ∼20% while it is only ∼6% for an incident proton or antiproton. Finally, the results are compared with various quark-model predictions.

A comparison is made of the properties and production mechanisms of the π + ω and K − ω systems produced in the reactions π + p → π + ω p at 4, 5, 8 and 16 GeV/ c and K − p → K − ω p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the π + ω case apeak is observed at 1.23 GeV (the B meson), while the K − ω mass distribution has a threshold enhancement. The cross section of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) π + ω system falls as p lab −2 , while that of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) K − ω system is almost constant with energy, indicating diffractive production of the K − ω system, but not of the πω system. Using a modified version of the Illinois partial-wave analysis program, it is found that the K − ω system is dominantly produced in the J P = 1 + state with small contributions of 0 − and 2 + , mainly by natural parity exchange - as is found for reactions such as K − p → (K − π + π − )p which are predominantly diffractive. For the π + ω system in the B mass region, J P = 1 + states, produced mainly by natural parity exchange are found; the contributions of 0 − P, 1 − P, 2 − P and 2 + D are consistent with zero. The 1 + D state occurs in the π + ω case but not in the K − ω system, nor in the K ππ − system produced in the K − p → K ππ p reaction.

We have studied the inclusive production of the hadrons π ± , K ± , p, p , Λ, Λ , ρ and ⋉ in the central region at the ISR s = 53 GeV , in both pp and p p collisions. Differences are observed only for K ± , p, and p production. We then study also correlations between low- p T pp and p p pairs in the two types of collisions, separating the contribution from baryon pair production and from the incident particles (stopping protons). We observe a positive correlation between two stopping protons; between the production of two pairs, and between a stopping proton and a pair production, there are negative correlations.

The cross sections for the line-reversed reaction pairs K+n→K0p and K−p→K¯0n, and K+p→K0Δ++ and K−n→K¯0Δ− have been determined with high statistics and good relative normalization at 8.36 and 12.8 GeV/c in a spectrometer experiment at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The cross sections for the K+-induced reactions are larger than for the K−, contrary to the expectations of weakly-exchange-degenerate Regge-pole models. The ratio of the reaction cross sections is about the same as at lower energies and shows little change with momentum transfer.

Results onK0 and Λ production ine+e− annihilation at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV are presented. The shape of theK0 and Λ differential cross sections are very similar to each other and to those of π±,K± and\(p(\bar p)\). Scaling violations are observed forK0 production. We obtain a value for the probability to produce strange quark-antiquark pairs relative to that to produce up or down quark-antiquark pairs of 0.35±0.02±0.05. The value ofRh=σ(e+e-→hX)/σµµ is shown to rise steadily with c.m. energy for all particle species. At 34 GeV we find 1.48±0.05K0 and 0.31±0.03 Λ per event. We have searched for possible Λ polarization. The production ofK0's and Λ's in jets is examined as a function ofpT2 and rapidity and compared to that of all charged particles; the yields in two and three jets are also investigated. Results are presented from events with two baryons\((\Lambda ,\bar \Lambda ,por\bar p)\) observed.

The production of the octet and decuplet baryons Λ, Ξ − , Σ (1385) ± , Ξ(1530) 0 and Ω − and the corresponding antibaryons has been measured in a sample of 485 000 hadronic Z 0 decays. Results on differential and integrated cross sections are presented. The negative kaon electromagnetic form factor has been measured in the space-like q 2 range 0.015–0.10 (GeV/ c ) 2 by the direct scattering of 250 GeV kaons from electrons at the CERN SPS. It is found that the kaon mean square charge radius 〈 r 2 K 〉 = 0.34 ± 0.05 fm 2 . From data collected simultaneously for πe scattering, the difference between the charged pion and kaon mean square radii (which is less sensitive to systematic errors) is found to be 〈 r 2 π 〉 − 〈 r 2 K = 0.1 0 ± 0.045 fm 2 .

We have measured the polarization parameter in π − p→K + Σ − backward scattering at 3.5 GeV/ c incident momentum, in the u -range −0.6< u <0.1 GeV 2 . The apparatus consisted of a polarized target in a spectrometer magnet, counter hodoscopes for time-of-flight measurements, a large water Čerenkov counter for kaon tagging, and wire spark chambers. After identification of the kaons, the reaction was selected by a missing-mass technique. An isospin analysis has been carried out to separate the contributions of the various isospin exchange amplitudes in the u -channel.

Results from a partial wave analysis of theKππ system produced in the hypercharge exchange reaction π−p→(K+π−π0)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c are presented. SignificantQ1 production is observed but no evidence is found forQ2 production thus confirming the results obtained in a previous decay Dalitz plot analysis of the same reaction. The relative phase behaviour of the 1+(Kϱ) partial waves obtained with the present analysis provides additional confirmation of the resonance interpretation of theQ1 enhancement. Information is also obtained about its production properties and the role played by the Λ polarization in the hypercharge exchange reaction. This is compared with the results obtained in the reactionK−p→(π+π−π0)Λ at 4 GeV/c.

Lambda production is studied in K − p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The total Λ cross section is 2.31±0.03 mb . Using the measured Λγ combinations we find that (31±4)% of all Λ's are produced via the Σ 0 → Λγ decay. About 60% of the Λ's are associated with either a N N or K K pair; about 40% of the Λ's are produced through the hypercharge annihiltion reaction K − p→ Λ + π 'a. The two-peak structure of the invariant x distribution can be related to fragmentation processes. The Λ is found to be unpolarized in the target fragmentation region, whereas a transverse polarization is observed for forward produced Λ's. As a function of p ⊥, a polarization effect is measured at medium p ⊥.

The production of neutral strange particlesKso, Λ and\(\bar \Lambda \) has been studied in 60 and 200 GeV per nucleon OAu and pAu collisions with the streamer chamber vertex spectrometer of the NA35 experiment at the CERN-SPS accelerator. Ratios of neutral strange particle production to negatively charged particle production in selected regions of phase space were measured to be the same in OAu and pAu reactions. The rates of strange particle production in central OAu collisions are about a factor of 16 higher than in pAu collisions when compared in the same regions of phase space. If an enhancement of strange particle production in OAu collisions relative to pAu collisions is considered to be a signature for quark-gluon plasma formation, no evidence supporting it is observed. The experimental results are compared to the Lund FRITIOF model.

We present further evidence for the I = 1, 4 + state A 2 ∗ (1900), in particular by isolating interference effects. The K π − system produced in the reaction K p → K 0 π − p at 4.2 GeV/ c is studied using high-statistics bubble-chamber data. The spin-parity structure is analysed as a function of the K 0 π − mass up to 1.52 GeV. Production of K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) is observed in helicity-0 and helicity-1 states. Contributions of natural and unnatural parity exchange are present. Considerable S-wave production is observed over the whole mass region considered. We also study the t ′ dependence of the K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) amplitudes. A comparison of our results on K ∗ (890) production with the results of an analysis of charge-exchange K ∗ (890) production, allows the separation of I = 0 and I = 1 exchange amplitudes.
