The cross section for the production of Ξ + particles in K + p interactions at 12.7 GeV/ c is 10 ± 3 μ b; the Ξ − production cross section is 2.5 ± 1.0 μ b; the upper limit on Ω − or Ω + production is 0.4 μb. The Ξ − are produced preferentially in the backward direction in the CM system while the Ξ + are produced mainly forward. The mass and lifetime of the Ξ + agree with the accepted values for the Ξ − hyperon.
Cross sections have been corrected for the detection probability of all observed hyperons involved in these reactions.

We have measured the production and decay angular distributions of the reaction π + p→ π O Δ ++ at 13.1 GeV/ c incident momentum. For − t > 0.1 (GeV/ c ) 2 the data is well described by M1 ϱ-exchange models, the best results being obtained from a weak cut model with a wrong signature nonsense zero. For − t < 0.1 (GeV/c) 2 there is evidence for the existence of other exchange mechanisms.

We present preliminary results from a sample of ∼ 1200 events obtained from an exposure of the 30-in. Argonne National Laboratory—National Accelerator Laboratory liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber to 102-GeVc protons. The elastic and total inelastic cross sections are respectively 6.9 ± 1.0 and 32.8 ± 1.1 mb. The parameters of the multiplicity distribution for negative tracks are 〈n−〉=2.17±0.07, D−2=〈n−2〉−〈n−〉2=2.56±0.12, and f2−=D−2−〈n−〉=0.39±0.10.

We have measured the differential cross section for small angle p−p scattering from 25 to 200 GeV incident energy and in the momentum transfer range 0.015<|t|<0.080 (GeVc)2. We find that the slope of the forward diffraction peak, b(s), increases with energy and can be fitted by the form b(s)=b0+2α′ lns, where b0=8.3±1.3 and α′=0.28±0.13 (GeVc)−2. Such dependence is compatible with the data existing both at higher and lower energies. We have also obtained the energy dependence of the p−p total cross section in the energy range from 48 to 196 GeV. Within our errors which are ± 1.1 mb the total cross section remains constant.

Differential cross sections have been measured for the reaction π−p→p¯d. At 4 GeV/c the total cross section is 0.58 ± 0.08 μb with an angular distribution consistent with isotropy. At 5 GeV/c a pronounced forward dip occurs. In contradiction to simple baryon-exchange models, the cross section is found to be an order of magnitude smaller than that for the line-reversed reaction pp→π+d. Upper limits for π−d→p¯t were also found.

From measurements of proton-proton elastic scattering at very small momentum transfers where the nuclear and Coulomb amplitudes interfere, we have deduced values of ρ, the ratio of the real to the imaginary forward nuclear amplitude, for energies from 50 to 400 GeV. We find that ρ increases from -0.157 ± 0.012 at 51.5 GeV to +0.039 ± 0.012 at 393 GeV, crossing zero at 280 ± 60 GeV.

The slope b(s) of the forward diffraction peak of p−p elastic scattering has been measured in the momentum-transfer-squared range 0.005≲|t|≲0.09 (GeV/c)2 and at incident proton energies from 8 to 400 GeV. We find that b(s) increases with s, and in the interval 100≲s≲750 (GeV)2 it can be fitted by the form b(s)=b0+2α′lns with b0=8.23±0.27, α′=0.278±0.024 (GeV/c)−2.

The real part of the forward amplitude for Compton scattering on protons was measured through the interference between the Compton and Bethe-Heithler amplitudes by detecting the zero-degree electron pairs asymmetrically. The measurement was made at an average photon energy of 〈k〉=2.2 GeV, and an average momentum transfer to the recoil proton 〈t〉=−0.027 (GeV/c)2. Measurements of π±p, K±p, pp, and p¯p elastic scattering are presented for incident momenta of 3, 3.65, 5, and 6 GeVc and momentum transfers typically 0.03 to 1.8 GeV2. The angle and momentum of the scattered particle were measured with the Argonne Effective Mass Spectrometer for 300 000 events, yielding 930 cross-section values with an uncertainty in absolute normalization of ±4%. Only the K+ and proton data show any significant change in slope of the forward diffraction peak with incident momentum. The particle-antiparticle crossover positions are consistent with no energy dependence, average values being 0.14 ± 0.03, 0.190 ± 0.006, and 0.162 ± 0.004 GeV2 for π' s, K' s, and protons, respectively; these errors reflect both statistics and the ±1.5% uncertainty in particle-antiparticle relative normalization. Differences between particle and antiparticle cross sections isolate interference terms between amplitudes of opposite C parity in the t channel; these differences indicate that the imaginary part of the odd-C nonflip-helicity amplitude has a J0(r(−t)12) structure for −t<0.8 GeV2, as predicted by strong absorption models. The cross-section differences for K± and proton-antiproton are in qualitative agreement with the predictions of ω universality, the agreement improving with increasing energy. The corresponding quark-model predictions relating the π± and K± differences failed by more than a factor of 2. We have combined our π± cross sections with other data to better determine the πN amplitudes in a model-independent way; results of this analysis are presented.

Results are given from a study of 15 518 events of the reaction K + d → K + π − pp. The K + π − spin density matrix and the constraints imposed on it by positivity have been studied. Analyses of K + π − → K + π − elastic scattering have been carried out using methods developed by Estabrooks and Martin and Ochs and Wagner for the analogous case of ππ scattering. Results are found to be in agreement with earlier K π scattering studies using the reaction K + p → K + π − Δ ++ at much higher energies. The S-wave scattering length is found to be in agreement with the prediction of current algebra.

Differential cross sections for K−p→K¯0n and K+n→K0p have been measured at 3, 4, and 6 GeV/c using a data sample of 6000 events. Contrary to simple exchange-degenerate models, the ratio of K+ to K− cross sections was found to be approximately 1.35, with little dependence on either s or t. Both reactions show a shallow dip near the forward direction, suggesting the importance of spin-flip amplitudes.

A sample of 1200 ϕ mesons produced in the Zweig-rule-forbidden reactions π±N→ϕN shows a flat t distribution (slope=1.7 ± 0.2 GeV−2) and a cross section suppressed by 0.0032±0.0004 relative to π−p→ωn. Natural-parity-exchange ω and ϕ production have similar t dependences, while ω and ϕ production by unnatural-parity exchange differ markedly. The spectrum and yield of protons produced by 60-, 100-, and 200-MeV π+ and π− beams on targets of He4, C12, Ni62, and Ta181 have been measured at 45° and 90°. A distinct high-energy component is seen in the protons from He4, which is consistent with a two-body absorption mechanism. Its cross section at 220 MeV is somewhat larger than calculated from the π+ + D process. Possible evidence is also seen for multinucleon absorption modes. We present cross sections and density-matrix elements from a high-statistics study of the reactions π−p→ρ0n, K−p→K¯*0(890)n, and K+n→K*0(890)p, at 3, 4, and 6 GeV/c and four-momentum transfer squared to the recoil nucleon −t<~0.9 GeV2. The experiment was carried out at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron using the effective-mass spectrometer. In the same experiment, we have measured the ρ−ω interference cross sections by comparison of the two reactions π−p→π−π+n and π+n→π+π−p, to which the interference terms contribute with opposite signs. We examine the systematics of ρ0 production: In the s channel we find little shrinkage with energy of the helicity-0 cross sections, which are presumably dominated by π exchange; the helicity-1 cross sections exhibit considerable shrinkage for unnatural-parity exchange, and antishrinkage for natural-parity exchange. The K*0 and K¯*0 production observables exhibit significant differences, especially in the helicity-1 states. These differences are due to interference between even- and odd-G-parity exchange amplitudes and they are related by SU(3) symmetry to ρ−ω interference effects and to the ρ0 and ω production observables. It is shown that exchange-degeneracy-breaking effects satisfy SU(3) symmetry and can be explained qualitatively in the frame-work of SU(3)-symmetric, strongly absorbed Regge-pole models. The results of our amplitude analysis are compared with previous phenomenological analyses and model predictions.

A clear, prompt dimuon signal has been observed in a low-statistics streamer-chamber experiment with 16-GeV/c πp interactions. Data are presented on the polarization parameter in pp and pn elastic scattering at 11.8 GeV/c for four-momentum transfers −t=0.15 to 0.9 GeV2. In contrast to lower energies where the pn polarization is positive, it is slightly negative at 11.8 GeV/c; averaging the data from −t=0.18 to 0.5 GeV2 we find P(pn)=(−0.9±0.5)%, to be compared with P(pp)=(5.6±0.8)%. These data, combined with our previous data at lower energies, show that the I=0 single-flip exchange amplitude has an anomalously rapid energy dependence.

This paper describes a measurement of the neutron-proton differential cross section made at the Argonne National Laboratory Zero Gradient Synchrotron. The differential cross sections, based on about 470 000 events, are presented for 8 different momentum ranges between 4.5 and 12.5 GeV/ c . The data extend from small angles out to about 145° in the c.m.s., corresponding to 0.14 < − t ⪅ 19 (GeV/ c ) 2 at the highest energies. These results in conjunction with previous np charge-exchange data provide almost complete angular distributions in this momentum range. A detailed comparison of the data with existing pp data and with theoretical predictions is made.

The 1 GeV high resolution proton nucleus scattering is reviewed. The effects from nuclear correlations are considered in detail. The sensitivity of differential cross sections to the one particle density and NN amplitude parameters are demonstrated. An analysis of the elastic proton scattering from the zero-spin nuclei and the obtained information on the neutron and matter distributions are presented. The scattering from a few nonspherical light nuclei is analysed. The first results on proton-nucleus polarization are discussed.

We have observed e + e − hadrons at C.M. energies of 13 GeV and 17 GeV at PETRA using the TASSO detector. We find R (13 GeV) = 5.6 ± 0.7 and R (17 GeV) = 4.0 ± 0.7. The additional systematic uncertainty is 20%. Comparing inclusive charged hadron spectra we observe scaling between 5 GeV and 17 GeV for x = p / p beam > 0.2; however the 13 GeV cross section is above the 17 GeV cross section for smaller x . This may be due to copious bb̄ production. The events become increasingly jet like at high energies as evidenced by a shrinking sphericity distribution with increasing energy.

Hadron jets produced in e + e − annihilation between 13 GeV and 31.6 GeV in c.m. at PETRA are analyzed. The transverse momentum of the jets is found to increase strongly with c.m. energy. The broadening of the jets is not uniform in azimuthal angle around the quark direction but tends to yield planar events with large and growing transverse momenta in the plane and smaller transverse momenta normal to the plane. The simple q q collinear jet picture is ruled out. The observation of planar events shows that there are three basic particles in the final state. Indeed, several events with three well-separated jets of hadrons are observed at the highest energies. This occurs naturally when the outgoing quark radiates a hard noncollinear gluon, i.e., e + e − → q q g with the quarks and the gluons fragmenting into hadrons with limited transverse momenta.

The energy dependence of the spin-parallel and spin-antiparallel cross sections for p↑+p↑→p+p at 90°c.m. was measured for beam momenta between 6 and 12.75 GeV/c. The ratio (dσdt)parallel:(dσdt)antiparallel at 90° is about 1.2 up to 8 GeV/c and then increases rapidly to a value of almost 4 near 11 GeV/c. Our data indicate that this ratio may depend only on the variable P⊥2, and suggests that the ratio may reach a limiting value of about 4 for large P⊥2.

A fourth state in the upsilon energy region has been seen in e+e− collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. A resonance is observed with a mass 1112±5 MeV above the lowest upsilon state. The 9.6-MeV rms width is greater than the 4.6-MeV energy resolution of the e+e− beams.
