We have measured the electron-proton scattering cross section at 248.9 Mev, 104.81°; 209.6 Mev, 149.75°; and 139.3 Mev, 104.19°. We find the following values: F1=0.767±0.025, F2=0.707±0.028, and F1F2=1.085±0.025 at −q2=2.98 f−2. F=0.902±0.011 at −q2=1.05 f−2. The last result agrees with previous measurements. The others are new contributions.

LARGE ANGLE pi- p ELASTIC SCATTERING AT 3.63-GeV/c.

Perl, Martin L. ; Lee, Yong Yung ; Marquit, Erwin ;
Phys.Rev. 138 (1965) B707-711, 1965.
Inspire Record 98 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26685

The differential cross section for elastic scattering of 3.63−GeVc π− mesons on protons was studied with a hydrogen bubble chamber, the emphasis being on large-angle scattering. From 90 to 180° in the barycentric system, the cross section is roughly flat with an average value of 2.7±1.0 μb/sr. Near and at 180°, there may be a slight peak of magnitude 10±6 μb/sr. But if such a peak exists, it is only one-third to one-fourth the size of the 180° peak found in 4.0 GeVc π++p elastic scattering. In addition to comparison with other π−+p and π++p large-angle elastic-scattering measurements, this measurement is compared with large-angle p+p elastic scattering. In the forward hemisphere a small peak or a plateau exists at cos θ*=+0.60. This appears to be a second diffraction maximum such as has been found in lower-energy π+p elastic scattering. A survey of indications of such a second diffraction maximum in other π+p measurements shows that it always occurs in the vicinity of −t=1.2 (GeVc)2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transfer. As the incident momentum increases, the relative size of this second maximum decreases.

pi+ proton, pi- proton and pp elastic scattering at 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c

Nuovo Cim. 38 (1965) 60, 1965.

Approximately 60 000 events have been collected in a spark chamber experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron which studied elastic diffraction scattering of π--p and p-p at incident momenta of 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c and of π+-p at 8.5 and 12.4 GeV/c. Magnetic analysis of the incoming and diffraction scattered particle, together with measurement of all angles, permitted each event to be determined as elastic subject to three constraints, so that the inelastic background was rejected with. high efficiency, even at the larger momentum, transfers. Much of the data have been processed by the CERN Automatic Flying-Spot DigitizerHPD. A detailed description of the experimental technique and of the methods of analysis is given. The results, together with data from lower energies, confirm the remarkable energy-independence of the shape of the pion-proton diffraction scattering peak up to |t| = 1.5 (GeV/c)2, wheret is the square of the four-momentum transfer, over a range of pion energies from 2 to 18 GeV. Proton-proton scattering does however appear to show a shrinking diffraction peak. In general, the data agree with other experiments using both counter and bubble chamber techniques, but some differences do appear. During the experiment, data were taken which set an upper limit of 2·102 μb/(GeV/c)2 on the differential elastic cross-section dσ/dt over a range of |t| from 20.9 to 23.4 (GeV/c)2 at 13.4 GeV/c incident pion momentum.

Measurement of Proton Electromagnetic Form Factors at High Momentum Transfers

Chen, K.W. ; Dunning, J.R. ; Cone, A.A. ; et al.
Phys.Rev. 141 (1966) 1267-1285, 1966.
Inspire Record 50783 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26655

Elastic electron-proton scattering cross sections have been measured using the internal beam of the 6-BeV Cambridge Electron Accelerator at laboratory scattering angles between 31° and 90° for values of the four-momentum transfer squared ranging from q2=0.389 to 6.81 (BeV/c)2 (q2=10 to 175F−2). Incident electron energies ranged from 1.0 to 6.0 BeV. Scattered electrons from an internal liquid-hydrogen target were momentum-analyzed using a single quadrupole spectrometer capable of momentum analysis up to 3.0 BeV/c. Čerenkov and shower counters were used to help reject pion and low-energy background. The cross sections presented are absolute cross sections with experimental errors ranging from 6.8% to 20%. Separation of proton electromagnetic form factors have been made for all but the two highest momentum transfer points, using the Rosenbluth formula. Both form factors, GEp and GMp, were observed to continue to decrease as the momentum transfer increases. An upper limit to the possible asymptotic values of the proton electromagnetic form factors has been established.

Photoproduction of pi+ Mesons at 3.4 and 5.0 BeV

We report measurements of the photoproduction from hydrogen of single π+ mesons at gamma-ray energies of 3.4 and 5.0 BeV and at laboratory angles of 5.1°, 7.1°, 9.9°, and 15.1°. The s dependence at fixed t is derived for momentum transfers of -0.20, -0.37, and -0.70 BeV2. The pion data are compared with a Reggeized one-pion-exchange model.

HIGH-ENERGY PHOTOMESON PRODUCTION FROM HYDROGEN VIA THE 'u CHANNEL'

We have investigated the photoproduction process γ+p→π++n over a wide range of energies and u values at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) accelerator. We also have investigated γ+p→π−+N*++ at one value of u and γ+p→K++Λ0, Σ0 at one u value and three energies. Our results for dσdu for the photoproduction of π+ mesons from hydrogen are roughly α2π of the corresponding cross sections for the elastic scattering of π− mesons from hydrogen. The u dependence of our cross sections is not dominated by nucleon exchange as it is in the case of π+p elastic scattering.

NEUTRON - PROTON ELASTIC SCATTERING 8-GeV/c TO 30-GeV/c

Gibbard, Bruce G. ; Jones, Lawrence W. ; Longo, Michael J. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 24 (1970) 22-24, 1970.
Inspire Record 52711 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.21622

The differential cross section for neutron-proton elastic scattering was measured in the diffraction region with incident-neutron momenta between 8 and 30 GeV/c. The experiment was a spark-chamber-counter experiment, conducted at the alternating-gradient synchrotron. Results are presented and compared with currently available lower energy np data and comparable energy pp data.
