From the measurement of e + e - pairs from the reaction p̄p→e + e - at the CERN-ISR, using an antiproton beam and a hydrogen jet target, we derived upper limits for the proton magnetic form factor in the time-like region at Q 2 ⋍8.9( GeV c ) 2 and Q 2 ⋍12.5( GeV c ) 2 .

The reaction γγ→π0η has been investigated with the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY storage ring DORIS II. Formation of δ(980) and A2(1320) has been observed with γγ partial widths Γγγ(A2)=1.14±0.20±0.2 6 keV and Γγγ(δ)B(δ→πη)=0.19±0.07 −0.07+0.10 keV.

$\tau$ Leptonic Branching Ratios and a Search for Goldstone Decay

Pairs of τ leptons produced at s=3.77 GeV have been studied in eμ, ee, and μμ final states. The leptonic branching ratios have been measured to be B(τ→eνν)=(18.2±0.7±0.5)% and B(τ→μνν)=(18.0±1.0±0.6)%. Limits have been set for the two-body decays τ→eG and τ→μG, where G is a light Goldstone boson.

First Observation and Cross-section Measurement of $\nu_e e^- \to \nu_e e^-$

We report the first observation and cross-section measurement of νe+e−→νe+e−. Using neutrinos of energy less than 53 MeV, we observed 63±17 events consistent with ν+e−→ν+e−, of which 51±17 events are assigned to νe+e−→νe+e−. The resulting cross section, {[8.9±3.2(statistical) ±1.5(systematic)]×10−45 cm2/MeV} Eν, agrees with standard electroweak theory, rules out constructive interference between weak charged-current and neutral-current interactions, and begins to indicate the existence of interference between these two interactions.

A Study of Photon Production in Hadronic $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation

The production of photons ine+e−→γ+hadrons is investigated at three centre of mass energies around 14, 22 and 34 GeV. On average, photons carry 25% of the total available energy, with a multiplicity similar to the charged multiplicity. The inclusive photon spectra are found to scale with the centre of mass energy as a function of the Feynman variablex. π0 and η mesons are reconstructed from their decay photons. The slopes of the spectra are similar to that for charged pions and approximate scaling is observed for π0 production. The mean π0 and η multiplicities are given. The observed photon yield can be fully accounted for by hadron decays and initial state radiation. However, up to one extra photon per event from other sources cannot be excluded.

The first observation of neutral pion production in π e inelastic scattering is presented. The cross section at 300 GeV for | t ‖>62;10 −3 (GeV / c ) 2 is 2.11 ± 0.47 nb, in good agreement with the theory of PCAC anomalies with 3 quark colours.
