Charged Particle Multiplicities in $B$ Meson Decay

The CLEO collaboration Alam, M.S. ; Csorna, S.E. ; Fridman, A. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 49 (1982) 357, 1982.
Inspire Record 178492 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20573

The charged multiplicity has been measured at the ϒ(4S) and a value of 5.75±0.1±0.2 has been obtained for the mean charged multiplicity in B-meson decay. Combining this result with the measurement of prompt leptons from B decay, the values 4.1±0.35±0.2 and 6.3±0.2±0.2 are found for the semileptonic and nonleptonic charged multiplicities, respectively. If b→c dominance is assumed for the weak decay of the B meson, then the semileptonic multiplicity is consistent with the recoil mass determined from the lepton momentum spectrum.

Measurement of the Proton - Anti-proton Elastic and Total Cross-section at a Center-of-mass Energy of 540-{GeV}

The UA4 collaboration Battiston, R. ; Bozzo, M. ; Braccini, P.L. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 117 (1982) 126-130, 1982.
Inspire Record 178898 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.30870

First results on the measurement of the elastic and total cross section at the CERN pp̄ Collider are presented. Combining the measurement of elastic scattering at low momentum transfer with the rate of inelastic interactions, a value of the total cross section of 66 mb with a 10% statistical error was obtained.

We have studied the topologies of hadronic events in e + e - annihilation data taken in the region of the upsilon resonances with the non-magnetic CUSB detectors at CESR. Using a thrust-like variable we compare the decay of ϒ, ϒ′ and ϒPrime; find for ϒ″ a significant excess of high thrust events, which we interpret as evidence for electric dipole transitions.

We have observed ϱ 0 production in e + e − annihilation to hadrons at high energies. The differential cross section at a centre of mass energy W , of 34 GeV, is presented. In the range 0.2< x < 0.7, we measure 0.33 ± 0.06 (stat.) ± 0.07 (syst.), 0.22 ± 0.06 ± 0.05 and 0.22 ± 0.02 ± 0.05 ϱ 0 /event at W = 14, 22 and 34 GeV respectively.

Measurement of Elastic electron - Neutron Cross-Sections Up to Q**2 = 10-(GeV/c)**2

Rock, Stephen ; Arnold, R.G. ; Bosted, Peter E. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 49 (1982) 1139, 1982.
Inspire Record 179135 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20575

The elastic electron-neutron cross section has been measured at four-momentum transfers squared (Q2) of 2.5, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 (GeV/c)2 with use of a deuterium target and detection of the scattered electrons at 10°. The ratio of neutron to proton elastic cross sections decreases with Q2. At high Q2 this trend is inconsistent with the dipole law, form-factor scaling, and many vector dominance models, although it is consistent with some parton models.

In a high statistics (180 events/μb) bubble chamber study of the reaction fx K − p → K 0 π − p at 8.25 GeV c , we observe a K 0 π − state at 2088±20 MeV with a width 170 +100 −50 MeV, produced with a cross section of 3.6±1.2 μ b. In addition we observe this state in the channels K ∗ (890)ππ , ϱ K π , ω K π with a combined cross section of 7.1±2.6 μ b, and possibly K ∗ (890)πππ .

In a search for short lived particles with a high resolution C 3 F 8 bubble chamber and a streamer chamber, 21 charmed meson candidates produced by 340 GeV cπ − have been identified. The cross section for associated charm production is (28±11) μb per nucleon assuming a linear A -dependence. The mean lifetimes of the D mesons in units of 10 −13 s are τ( D 0 , D ̄ 0 ) = 4.1 −1.3 +2.6 ± 0.5, τ( D ± ) = 6.3 −2.3 4.8 ± 1.5 .
