This paper reports measurements of the total cross section from 150 to 240 Mev of incident photon energy and measurements of the 135° differential cross section from 180 to 215 Mev. A Monte Carlo evaluation of the γ-ray telescope efficiency by means of an electronic digital computer is outlined. The combined results indicate that a small but finite amount of S-state production occurs and that the angular distribution becomes flatter as the energy decreases. The latter effect is associated with production in unenhanced P-states and with a lack of electric quadrupole production. Good agreement with the Chew-Low theory is demonstrated by a comparison between the photoproduction and scattering of π0-mesons, where the scattering cross sections are derived from those for charged mesons by charge independence.

Polarization in pi--p Scattering between 500 and 940 Mev

A graphite-plate spark chamber has been used to analyze the polarization of protons recoiling from π−−p scattering. The observations were made at 90° (c.m. system) pion scattering angle for seven incident pion energies between 500 and 940 Mev, at 120° or 135° for five energies in this interval, and also at 75° for 500 Mev only. The results are compared with predictions of several models used to explain the maxima in the π−−p scattering cross section. Qualitative arguments show that the energy intervals between these maxima are not completely dominated by neighboring single-state resonances. Phase shifts found to be large in scattering also seem to be large in polarization.

STUDY OF DELTA++ PRODUCTION IN THE REACTION pi+ p ---> pi+ pi0 p AT 13.1-GeV/c

Nucl.Phys.B 36 (1972) 363-372, 1972.

We have measured the production and decay angular distributions of the reaction π + p→ π O Δ ++ at 13.1 GeV/ c incident momentum. For − t > 0.1 (GeV/ c ) 2 the data is well described by M1 ϱ-exchange models, the best results being obtained from a weak cut model with a wrong signature nonsense zero. For − t < 0.1 (GeV/c) 2 there is evidence for the existence of other exchange mechanisms.

Measurement of the differential cross-section for pi- p ---> n pi0 at 317, 452, and 491 mev/c

Inspire Record 73968 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.3558

Seventeen differential cross sections of the pion-nucleon charge-exchange reaction have been measured at total center-of-mass energies of 1245, 1337, and 1363 MeV. Most measurements are based on the neutron-photon coincidence method, using carefully calibrated neutron counters and an efficient, large-area photon detector. The results are used to test the predictions of charge independence, with which they agree. The results also confirm the Ayed-Bareyre-Sonderegger phase-degeneracy hypothesis at θ̃π0=180°.

This report concerns itself with the study of four- or five-body final states produced by the interaction of 4.48-GeV/c K− mesons on neutrons. The data result from a 372 000-picture exposure in the Argonne National Laboratory 30-in. deuterium-filled bubble chamber. The reactions studied include (1) K−n→Λπ+π−π−, (2) K−n→Σ0π+π−π−, (3) K−n→Λπ+π−π−π0, (4) K−n→Λπ+π−π−MM, (5) K−n→Λπ−K+K−, and (6) K−n→Λπ−KL0KS0, where all the Λ particles decayed visibly. Evidence is presented for the existence of the Σ(1640) whose mass and width are 1642 ± 12 MeV/c2 and 55 ± 24 MeV/c2, respectively. The branching ratios are found to be consistent with an octet assignment. The A2 data are presented and are compatible with JPC=2++. In addition, the productions of ρ0, ω, and φ0 are discussed in conjunction with simultaneous Σ−(1385) production and the results are compared with quark-model predictions.
