Small angle elastic scattering events have been observed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. Directions of both particles as well as the collision vertex are reconstructed with the help of four sets of spark chambers, two for each of the two arms. The elastic nature of the events is demonstrated by a collinearity requirement. We find values for the (diffraction) slope parameter in disagreement with the simple linear extrapolation of lower energy (Surpukov) data.

Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured over the angular range 7 to 16 mrad at centre-of-mass energies of 31, 45 and 53 GeV using the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The results indicate that the diffraction peak has continued to shrink with increasing energy, but not as fast as suggested by the results at lower energies.

This work extends our previous investigations at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings, with improved statistics at three different energies, wider angular range and a better control over systematic errors. Values for the (diffraction) shape parameter b are given.

We have investigated the above processes at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Results show a marked change of the slope parameter b ( t , s ) = (d/d t ) ln (d σ /d t ) around − t ≈ 0.10 GeV 2 . The s − and t − dependence of b ( t , s ) have been observed over the interval 460 GeV 2 < s < 2900 GeV 2 and 0.02 GeV 2 < t < 0.40 GeV 2 .

In an exposure of the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a 303−GeVc proton beam, 2245 interactions have been observed. The measured total cross section is 39.0±1.0 mb and the average charged particle multiplicity 〈nch〉=8.86±0.16.
TOPOLOGICAL CROSS SECTIONS.
Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings in the four-momentum transfer range 0.001 ⩽… t …⩽ 0.015 GeV 2 at centre-of-mass energies of 23 and 31 GeV. The detection of Coulomb scattering and of its interference with nuclear scattering leads to the determination of the real part of the nuclear amplitude and of the total proton-proton cross section by the optical theorem.

The charged-particle multiplicity distribution in 205−GeVc proton-proton interactions is presented. In addition, the total diffractive contributions to each charged multiplicity are estimated assuming a factorizable Pomeron.
THE TOTAL CROSS SECTION NORMALIZATION COMES FROM THIS AND OTHER EXPERIMENTS.
In a 35 000-picture exposure of the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a 300-GeV/c proton beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, 10054 interactions have been observed. The measured total cross section is $40.68 \pm 0.55$ mb, the elastic cross section is $7.89 \pm 0.52$ mb, and the average charged-particle multiplicity for inelastic events is $8.S0 \pm 0.12$.

New experimental results are presented on proton-proton elastic scattering at centre-of-mass energies s =23 GeV and s =62 GeV . The data are obtained using the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The absolute differential cross-sections show an energy-dependent behaviour. The position of the diffraction minimum changes from t =(−1.44±0.02)GeV 2 at 23 GeV to (−1.26±0.03)GeV 2 at 62 GeV. The cross-section at the second maximum is increasing with s . The connection of these observations with the hypothesis of “geometrical scaling” is discussed.

The properties of the diffractive peak observed in the mass spectra of systems recoiling against observed high-momentum protons emerging from pp collisions at the CERN ISR have been investigated. The cross sections in this peak have been found to have a steep t dependence which flattens out as | t | increases. The high mass side of the peak varies approximately as 1/ M 2 (where M is the missing mass of the recoiling system) and scales well in terms of the variable M 2 / s . The position of the maximum has been observed to move to lower values of M 2 / s as the kinematic boundary of this variable decreases with increasing s . The measured cross sections, integrated up to M 2 / s =0.05, rise by (15±5)% over the s range 549 to 1464 GeV 2 .
