Elastic π−+p differential cross-section data are presented at the incident-pion momenta 1.72, 1.89, 2.07, 2.27 and 2.46 GeV/c. Resonant behaviour in the coefficients of a Legendre polynomial expansion indicates G- or H-wave resonance. Further analysis using an energy-dependent parametrization of G- and H-waves shows the results to be compatible with the 7−/2 assignment for the , but equally acceptable solutions are obtained with the inclusion of an additional 9+/2 resonance contribution.

A test of the QED process e+e- -> gamma gamma (gamma) is reported. The data analysed were collected with the DELPHI detector in 1998 and 1999 at the highest energies achieved at LEP, reaching 202 GeV in the centre-of-mass. The total integrated luminosity amounts to 375.7 pb^{-1}. The differential and total cross-sections for the process e+e- -> gamma gamma were measured, and found to be in agreement with the QED prediction. 95% Confidence Level (C.L.) lower limits on the QED cut-off parameters of Lambda+ > 330 GeV and Lambda- > 320 GeV were derived. A 95% C.L. lower bound on the mass of an excited electron of 311 GeV/c^2 (for lambda_gamma = 1) was obtained. s-channel virtual graviton exchange was searched for, resulting in 95% C.L. lower limits on the string mass scale, M_S: M_S > 713 GeV/c^2 (lambda = 1) and M_S > 691 GeV/c^2 (lambda = -1).

The total and differential cross sections of the process e+e- -> n gamma with n >= 2 are measured using data collected by the L3 experiment at centre-of-mass energies of \sqrt{s}=183 and 189 GeV. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. Limits are set on deviations from QED, contact interaction cut-off parameters and masses of excited electrons.

The total and the differential cross-sections for the reaction e + e − → γγ ( γ ) have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 183 GeV for an integrated luminosity of 78.19 pb −1 . The results agree with the QED predictions. The lower limits (obtained including previously published results at the Z 0 energies) on the QED cutoff parameters are Λ + >253 GeV and Λ − >225 GeV and the lower bound on the mass of an excited electron with an effective coupling constant λ γ =1 is 231 GeV/ c 2 . All the limits are at the 95% confidence level.
The cross section of the previously published data (sqrt(s)=91.25 GeV, see PL 327B, 386) is given at the mean of the CM energies weighted by the luminosityat each point.

We have studied the process e+e− → nγ (n ≥ 2) at an average center-of-mass energy of 133 GeV using the L3 detector at LEP. For an integrated luminosity of 4.95 pb−1 we find one γγγγ(γ) final state with only hard photons. The rates of both γγγ and γγ events are consistent with QED expectations. The cross section of the reaction e+e− → γγ(γ) in the polar range 16° < θγ < 164° is measured to be 22.6 ± 2.2 pb. Decays into photons of narrow scalar resonances with masses between 90 and 130 GeV are not observed. The observation of the event with four energetic photons is consistent with QED although the kinematic configuration of the photons is atypical.

Total and differential cross sections for the process e + e − → γγ ( γ ), and the total cross section for the process e + e − → γγγ , are measured at energies around 91 GeV using the data collected with the L3 detector from 1991 to 1993. We set lower limits, at 95% CL, on a contact interaction energy scale parameter Λ > 602 GeV, on the mass of an excited electron m e ∗ >146 GeV and on the QED cut-off parameters Λ + > 149 GeV and Λ _ > 143 GeV. Upper limits are also set o branching fractions of Z decaying into γγ , π ° and ηγ of 5.2 × 10 −5 , 5.2 × 10 −5 and 7.6 × 10 −5 respectively. The reactions e + e − → ℓ + ℓ − nγ (ℓ = e , μ , τ ) are studied using the data collected from 1990 to 1994. The data are consistent with the QED expectations.

With data corresponding to 142 pb −1 accumulated at s = 57.8 GeV by the AMY detector at TRISTAN we measure the cross section of the reactions e + e − → μ + μ − and e + e − → τ + τ − and the symmetry in the angular distributions. For the lowest order cross section we obtain σ μμ = 27.54 ± 0.65 ± 0.95 pb and σ ττ = 28.27 ± 0.87 ± 0.69 pb, and for the forward-backward asymmetry, A μμ = 0.303 ± 0.027 ± 0.008 and A ττ = −0.291 ± 0.040 ± 0.019. These measurements agree with the standard model. Assuming e − μ − τ univrsality we extract the vector and axial coupling constants | gν | = 0.00 ± 0.09 and | g A | = 0.476 ± 0.024. A fit of data to composite models places lower bounds (95% confidence level) on the compositeness scale of 2–4 TeV.

The total and the differential cross sections for the reaction e + e − → γγ ( γ ) have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP using an integrated luminosity of 36.9 pb −1 . The lower limits obtained on the QED cutoff parameters are Λ + > 143 GeV and Λ − > 120 GeV, and the lower bound on the mass of an excited electron with an effective coupling constant λ γ = 1 is 132 GeV/ c 2 . Upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays Z 0 → γγ , Z 0 → π 0 γ , Z 0 → ηγ and Z 0 → γγγ have been determined to be 5.5 × 10 −5 , 5.5 × 10 −5 , 8.0 × 10 −5 , and 1.7 × 10 −5 respectively. We report measurements of the proton form factors GEp and GMp extracted from elastic scattering in the range 1≤Q2≤3 (GeV/c)2 with total uncertainties < 15% in GEp and < 3% in GMp. Comparisons are made to theoretical models, including those based on perturbative QCD, vector-meson dominance, QCD sum rules, and diquark constituents in the proton. The results for GEp are somewhat larger than indicated by most theoretical parametrizations, and the ratios of the Pauli and Dirac form factors Q2(F2pF1p) are lower in value and demonstrate a weaker Q2 dependence than those predictions. A global extraction of the elastic form factors from several experiments in the range 0.1 0.1<Q2<10 (GeV/c)2 is also presented.

The differential cross section for the reaction H2(γ,p)n has been measured at several center-of-mass angles ranging from 50° to 143° for photon energies between 0.8 and 1.8 GeV. The experiment was performed at the SLAC-NPAS facility with the use of the 1.6 GeV/c spectrometer to detect the high energy protons produced by a bremsstrahlung beam directed at a liquid deuterium target. Contributions from concurrent disintegration by the residual electron beam were determined by measuring the proton yield without the Cu photon radiator. At angles not very far from 90°, the energy dependence of the cross sections is consistent with predictions of scaling using counting rules for constituent quarks. At least one theoretical calculation based on a meson-baryon picture of the reaction is able to reproduce the magnitude and energy dependence of the 90° cross section. The angular distribution exhibits a large enhancement at backward angles at the higher energies.

The cross section of the pure QED process e + e − → γγ has been measured using data accumulated during the 1989 and 1990 scans of the Z 0 resonance at LEP. Both the energy dependence and the angular distribution are in good agreement with the QED prediction. Upper limits on the branching ratios of Z 0 → γγ , Z 0 → π 0 γ and Z 0 → ηγ have been set at 1.4×10 −4 , 1.4×10 −4 and 2.0×10 −4 respectively. Lower limits on the cutoff parameters of the modified electron propagator have been found to be Λ + > 117 GeV and Λ − > 110 GeV. The reaction e + e − → γγγ has also been studied and was found to be consistent with the QED prediction. An upper limit on the branching ratio of Z 0 → γγγ has been set at 6.6 × 10 −5 . All the limits are given at 95% confidence level.

We report measurements of the proton elastic form factors, G E p and G M p , extracted from electron scattering in the range 1⩽ Q 2 ⩽3(GeV/ c ) 2 . The uncertainties are <15% in G E p and <3% in G M p . The values of G E p are larger than indicated by most theoretical parameterizations, The ratio of Pauli and Dirac form factors, Q 2 F 2 p / F 1 p , is lower and demonstrates less Q 2 dependence than most of these parameterizations. Comparisons are made to theoretical models, including those based on perturbative QCD and vector-meson dominance.

Differential cross sections for π + p elastic scattering were measured for seven incident energies from 65 to 140 MeV at laboratory scattering angles between 93° and 165°. The results are compared with previous results of Bertin et al. and the phase-shift analysis of Arndt and Roper. Agreement between the phase-shift analysis and the data is good.

The differential cross section for scattering of pions on deuterons was measured at LAMPF at laboratory momenta of 343, 441, 539, and 637 MeVc, using an E−ΔE method to identify the recoil deuterons. Angles ranged from 40° to 160° in the center of mass system. The momentum resolution was σ=±3.5% and the angular resolution was ± 1.70° in the laboratory system. The experimental method is discussed, and results are presented and compared with other experimental data as well as with various theoretical calculations. Measurements of complete angular distributions of elastic K + p scattering at closely spaced incident momenta from 1368 to 2259 MeV/ c are presented and discussed. A PDP-8 computer controlled system of scintillation counters and core-readout wire spark chambers was used for the detection of elastic events. Diffractive behaviour is already present at the lowest measured momentum and becomes more prominent as the incident momentum increases. An expansion of the angular distributions in terms of Legendre polynomials shows no marked structure of the expansion coefficients as functions of the incident momentum. Our measurements can be adequately described by a number of existing phase shift solutions within 5% of their published values. Also Regge pole extrapolations represent our data satisfactorily.

Results of a measurement of the π−p charge-exchange process at backward angles are presented. Differential cross sections were measured in the angular region −0.5<cosθ*<−1.0 at incident momenta of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 GeV/c. An additional background subtraction to a version of the data published previously has a significant effect at 6 GeV/c and brings the data into agreement with more recent measurements. The 6-GeV/c data were combined with existing measurements of the differential cross sections for backward π+p and π−p elastic scattering to yield values for the isotopic-spin-½ and −32 u-channel and s-channel amplitudes for backward pion-nucleon scattering and for the magnitude of the phases between them. It is found that the u-channel amplitudes can be explained by pure Regge-pole (Δδ, Nα) exchange only near the extreme backward direction, but that a Reggeized absorption model agrees at least qualitatively with the data. The phase difference between the I=12 and 32 s-channel amplitudes is approximately 90° over the region −0.8<u<0 (GeV/c)2.

The cross section for photoproduction of single π+ from hydrogen has been measured at laboratory angles of 110°, 127.5° and 152°, between 0.9- and 3.2-GeV incident photon energy. Measurements have been made with approximately 15% statistical accuracy at about 40 photon energies at each angle. The results agree well with the previous Caltech data of Thiessen. The cross section shows a rapid drop with increasing energy with superimposed bumps or shoulders corresponding to the N(1688), Δ(1920), and Δ(2420). A shallow minimum is observed at the N(2190) resonance.
