The process e+ e- -> e+ e- Z/gamma* is studied with the OPAL detector at LEP at a centre of mass energy of sqrt(s) = 189 GeV. The cross-section times the branching ratio of the Z/gamma* decaying into hadrons is measured within Lorentz invariant kinematic limits to be (1.2 +/- 0.3 +/- 0.1) pb for invariant masses of the hadronic system between 5 GeV and 60 GeV and (0.7 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.1) pb for hadronic masses above 60 GeV. The differential cross-sections of the Mandelstam variables s-hat, t-hat, and u-hat are measured and compared with the predictions from the Monte Carlo generators grc4f and PYTHIA. From this, based on a factorisation ansatz, the total and differential cross-sections for the subprocess e gamma -> e Z/gamma* are derived.

The dijet invariant mass distribution has been measured in the region between 120 and 1000 GeV/c2, in 1.8-TeV pp¯ collisions. The data sample was collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Data are compared to leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations using two different clustering cone radii R in the jet definition. A quantitative test shows good agreement of data with the LO and NLO QCD predictions for a cone of R=1. The test using a cone of R=0.7 shows less agreement. The NLO calculation shows an improvement compared to LO in reproducing the shape of the spectrum for both radii, and approximately predicts the cone size dependence of the cross section.
Observed cross section using R = 1.0. The second systematic error is the theoretical uncertainty and includes only the effect of the out-of-cone losses, the underlying event energy, and the contribution of multi-jet events.

Inclusive dimuon production by 39.5 GeV/ c π ± , K ± , p and p¯ is described for masses greater than 2.0 GeV/ c 2 . The π − , π + and (π − − π + ) continuum cross-sections exceed the naive Drell-Yan predictions by a factor ∼2.4. The pion valence structure function has been measured and is consistent with a corresponding measurement at 200 GeV/ c .

In diffractive photoproduction ofηπ+π−, the two-body substatesηρ0 andA2π are found to contribute significantly to the cross-section forηπ+π− masses below 2.4 GeV. From a spin-parity analysis the branching ratio, ρ′(1600)→ηρ/ρ′(1600)→, is determined to be <0.02 at the 68.3% confidence level. TheA2π component shows an enhancement around 1.7 GeV. The spin-parity analysis indicates a probable contribution to this signal from exclusive photoproduction of theg(1690).

We present the dijet invariant-mass distribution in the region between 60 and 500 GeV, measured in 1.8-TeV p¯p collisions in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Jets are restricted to the pseudorapidity interval |η|<0.7. Data are compared with QCD calculations; axigluons are excluded with 95% confidence in the region 120<MA<210 GeV for axigluon width ΓA=NαsMA6, with N=5.
Corrected mass distributions for jets restricted to the pseudorapidity region ABS(ETARAP) <0.7.
The reactions γ p→K + K − π 0 (p) and γ p→ K s 0 K ± π ± (p) have been measured using tagged photons in the energy range 20 to 70 GeV. No resonance structure is observed in either of the K K π invariant mass distributions, which range from threshold up to ∼ 3 GeV. The photoproduction cross sections for φπ 0 and K ∗ (892)K are presented and are compared with theoretical predictions. No evidence has been found for the photoproduction of φ′ (1680).

We present data on proton-proton collisions, obtained at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings, in which two roughly back-to-back π 0 's of high transverse momentum ( p T ) were produced. The angular distribution of the dipion axis relative to the collision axis is found to be independent of both the effective mass m of the dipion system and the centre-of-mass energy √ s of the proton-proton collision. The cross-sections d σ d m at the values of √ s satisfy a scaling law of the form d σ d m = G(x) m n , where x = m(π 0 , π 0 )//trs and n = 6.5 ± 0.5 . We show from our data that the leading π 0 carries most of the momentum of the scattered parton. Given this fact, the axis of the dipion system follows closely the direction of the scattered constituents, and we exploit this to determine the angular dependence of the hard-scattering subprocess. We also compare our data with the lowest order QCD predictions using structure functions as determined in deep-inelastic scattering and fragmentation functions from electron-positron annihilation.

This paper reports studies of the reactions γp→ρ π π πp and γp→ρ ρ πp. In particular a peak is reported in the ρ ρ π mass spectrum with closely similar mass and width to those of the ω ρ π peak previously reported in the reaction γp→ω ρ πp. The ratio of production cross sections is found to be ρ ρ π/ω ρ π=0.96±0.19, in serious disagreement with the expectation from Vector Meson Dominance. A possible explanation is indicated.
