Large angle elastic proton proton polarization at 5.15 gev/c

We present herein the initial results of a large-angle elastic p−p polarization experiment which is now in progress at the Argonne ZGS (Zero-Gradient Synchrotron) accelerator. Data for the incident proton momentum of 5.15 GeVc are presented for 30∘≲θc.m.≲90∘. These results, which extend to t≈−4.0(GeVc)2, represent the first high-statistics p−p polarization measurements for |t| values greater than ∼2.5 (GeVc)2. We observe a minimum in the polarization near t=−0.8(GeVc)2, a smooth increase in the polarization until a maximum is attained near t=−1.8(GeVc)2, and then a monotonic decline in the polarization until the value of zero is reached at θc.m.=90∘. The data are analyzed in terms of an optical model.

Systematic study of pi+- p, k+- p, p p, and anti-p p forward elastic scattering from 3 to 6 gev/c

Measurements of π±p, K±p, pp, and p¯p elastic scattering are presented for incident momenta of 3, 3.65, 5, and 6 GeVc and momentum transfers typically 0.03 to 1.8 GeV2. The angle and momentum of the scattered particle were measured with the Argonne Effective Mass Spectrometer for 300 000 events, yielding 930 cross-section values with an uncertainty in absolute normalization of ±4%. Only the K+ and proton data show any significant change in slope of the forward diffraction peak with incident momentum. The particle-antiparticle crossover positions are consistent with no energy dependence, average values being 0.14 ± 0.03, 0.190 ± 0.006, and 0.162 ± 0.004 GeV2 for π' s, K' s, and protons, respectively; these errors reflect both statistics and the ±1.5% uncertainty in particle-antiparticle relative normalization. Differences between particle and antiparticle cross sections isolate interference terms between amplitudes of opposite C parity in the t channel; these differences indicate that the imaginary part of the odd-C nonflip-helicity amplitude has a J0(r(−t)12) structure for −t<0.8 GeV2, as predicted by strong absorption models. The cross-section differences for K± and proton-antiproton are in qualitative agreement with the predictions of ω universality, the agreement improving with increasing energy. The corresponding quark-model predictions relating the π± and K± differences failed by more than a factor of 2. We have combined our π± cross sections with other data to better determine the πN amplitudes in a model-independent way; results of this analysis are presented.

A Search for Delta I = 2 Electromagnetic Currents in Pion Photoproduction

Differential cross sections for the reactions γp→π0p, π+n and γn→π−p, π0n were measured in a single experiment using tagged photons in the energy region 240-450 MeV incident on H21 and H22 targets. Results of the measurements of the ratios π0nπ0p and π−pπ+n are presented. The ratio of isotensor to isovector amplitude is found to be 0.00±0.02.

Differential cross sections for elastic pi+ p scattering between 1.2 and 2.3 GeV/c

Differential cross sections for π+p elastic scattering in the momentum region 1.2 to 2.3 GeV/c are presented for the center-of-mass angular range 0.9>cosθ>−0.9. Typically, 50 000 events were obtained at each of 16 momenta using magnetostrictive-readout wire spark chambers to detect the particles scattered from a liquid hydrogen target. The results are compared to those of the CERN-71 phase-shift analysis. The well-known dips at t≅−0.7 (GeV/c)2 and at u′=−0.2 (GeV/c)2 are observed. In addition, structure is seen at constant u′=−1.3 (GeV/c)2. The results of a pion attenuation study in iron are also presented.

Measurement of the Depolarization Parameter in Elastic Proton Proton Scattering at 3 and 6-GeV/c

Results are presented from an experiment designed to make the first systematic study of the depolarization parameter in elastic proton-proton scattering at high energies. Measurements were made at 3.0 and 6.0 GeV/c at |t| values extending to 1.7 (GeV/c)2 at the higher momentum. A high-intensity unpolarized proton beam was incident on a polarized proton target and the polarization of the elastically scattered recoil protons was determined with a carbon analyzer. The results are discussed in the framework of optical and exchange models.

Differential Cross-Sections for K- p Elastic Scattering from 1.4-GeV/c to 1.9-GeV/c

We report here the results from an experiment to obtain differential cross sections for K−p elastic scattering in the laboratory momentum region from 1.4 to 1.9 GeV/c. These data span the region of a bump in the K−p total cross section at an energy of 2.05 GeV. Approximately 20000 elastic events were obtained at each of four momenta with an angular coverage of 0.9≥cosθc.m.≥−0.9. The data are intended to aid in phase-shift analyses of the resonances causing the bump in the total cross section and to study dip structures at constant values of the Mandelstam variables t and u.

Wide Angle Differential Cross-Sections for Elastic Proton Proton Scattering in the Region of Delta (1236) Production

Differential cross sections for p−p elastic scattering are presented with scattering angles in the center-of-mass system greater than 35° to 50°. The data were obtained at incident laboratory momenta 0.857, 1.091, 1.210, 1.374, 1.405, and 1.501 GeV/c. This spans the region of the onset of Δ(1236) production and where a possible spin-singlet D-wave resonance is indicated in an analysis of earlier data.

Measurement of the Regeneration Phase in Carbon from 4-GeV/c to 10-GeV/c

A regeneration experiment exploring KS−KL interference in the decay modes KS,L→π+π− and KS,L→π±l∓ν (l=μ or e) has been performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory alternating-gradient synchrotron. The regeneration phases in carbon obtained from the time-dependent charge asymmetry of the Ke3 and Kμ3 modes are in good agreement and yield a combined result ϕf≡argi[f(0)−f(0)]=−40.9°±2.6° at the average K0 momentum of 7.5 GeV/c.

Lambda p Interactions Below 24-GeV/c

Λp interactions have been studied at momenta up to 24 GeV/ c using a new bubble chamber technique. We find that the Λp elastic cross section has fallen to approximately 6 mb at the highest momentum. Results are presented on Λ p→ Λ p π + π − for the first time above 5 GeV c .

Absolute Cross-Section Measurements Using Neutron Beams in Bubble Chambers

We introduce a novel technique for the investigation of neutron-proton interactions in a bubble chamber, based on the tagging of neutrons by their interactions, which has made possible the absolute normalization of the neutron beams in two experiments. In addition, measurements have been made on elastic scattering and inclusive cross sections which have been largely inaccessible to existing bubble chamber techniques.
