We have measured the difference between the pp total cross-sections for parallel and anti-parallel longitudinal spin states at beam momenta of 3 and 6 GeV/ c . These results, combined with our previous measurements, at lower momenta, are useful in clarifying a striking structure appearing at around 1.5 GeV/ c . We have also measured for the first time, the spin-spin correlation parameter C LL ( t ) in pp elastic scattering at 6 GeV/ c . We observe evidence for an exchange with A 1 -like quantum-numbers.

We have made the first measurement of the spin-spin correlation parameter CSS in pp elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c over the |t| range from 0.05 to 1.5 (GeV/c)2. The measured CSS data points are all negative, and their absolute values increase with |t|. The results are compared with some existing attempts to describe the pp scattering process.

Measurements of Triple and Double Spin Parameters in Elastic $p p$ Scattering at 6-{GeV}/$c$

Toward the goal of experimentally determining the p-p elastic-scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a number of triple- and double-spin correlation parameters over the ‖t‖ range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. These new data permit the first nucleon-nucleon amplitude determination in the multi-GeV energy range. Polarized beams from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron and polarized targets were utilized. The polarization of the recoil proton was measured with a carbon polarimeter. A total of 14 different spin observables were measured (five spin transfer, four depolarization, and five triple-spin correlation parameters). These have been combined with earlier results, resulting in a data set of typically 30 measurements of 20 different spin observables for each of six ‖t‖ values between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A solution for the amplitudes has been found at each ‖t‖, and comparisons are presented with several different models. The spin-nonflip helicity amplitudes are found to be much larger than the spin-flip amplitudes.

Toward the goal of experimentally determining pp elastic scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a linear combination of triple-spin correlation parameters and also a linear combination of spintransfer parameters over the |t| range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A horizontally polarized beam (S direction) was obtained by precessing the spin of the polarized beam from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron using a superconducting solenoid. The target protons were polarized vertically (N direction) and the polarization of the recoil protons was measured with a carbon polarimeter. The results are consistent with the amplitude corresponding to π exchange being almost real and positive.

The processes e + e − → e + e − and μ + μ − have been studied at PETRA using the JADE detector. The data, which were collected at s -values of up to 1300 GeV 2 have been analysed in terms of an electro-weak extension of QED to obtain values for the weak vector and axial vector couplings in the lepton sector. The values obtained agree with the predictions of the standard Salam-Weinberg model and the data are further analysed in terms of this model to obtain the limits 0.10 < sin 2 ϑ w < 0.40 (68% CL). The mass of the neutral weak gauge boson is deduced to be greater than 51 GeV/ c 2 .

Topological distributions of hadrons from the reaction e + e − → hadrons are studied at center of mass energies of about 33 GeV. The experimental distributions in the parameters acoplanarity and tripodity, both sensitive to events with a four-jet structure, show significant deviations from the expectations for two- and three-jet events. They can be described well by the inclusion of four-jet events. The relative magnitude of the observed effect indicates second order QCD as its probable origin.

QCD provides a good description of the observed distributions. Observation of Planar Three Jet Events in e+ e- Annihilation and Evidence for Gluon Bremsstrahlung

Topological distributions of charged and neutral hadrons from the reaction e + e − → multihadrons are studied at √ s of about 30 GeV. An excess of planar events is observed at a rate which cannot be explained by statistical fluctuations in the standard two-jet process. The planar events, mostly consisting of a slim jet on one side and a broader jet on the other, are shown actually to possess three-jet structure by demonstrating that the broader jet itself consists of two collinear jets in its own rest system. Detailed agreement between data and predictions is obtained if the process e + e − →q q ̄ g is taken into account. This strongly suggests gluon bremsstrahlung as the origin of the planar three-jet events. By comparison of the data with the qq̄g-model we obtain a value for the strong coupling constant of α S ( q 2 = 0.17 ± 0.04.

Cross sections for the reactionse+e−→e+e− (Bhabha scattering) ande+e−→γγ are measured for center-of-mass (c.m.) energies\(\sqrt s \) between 12.0 and 34.6 GeV. The results agree with the predictions of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the cut-off parameters are determined. From Bhabha scattering at the highest energy,\(\left\langle {\sqrt s } \right\rangle= 34.6 GeV\), the 1 δ limits 0.12<sin2 ϑw<0.38 are obtained for the weak mixing angle. The higher order (α3) QED processese+e−→e+e−γ ande+e−→γγγ are also studied and are found to agree with the α3 QED predictions. We have investigated the properties of jet production in almost real γγ collisions at √ s =58 GeV with the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN e + e − collider. The data were analyzed with a jet-clustering method based on a cone algorithm. The jet rate shows evidence for a hard scattering effect of the hadronic constituents of a photon (resolved photon processes). We have also observed a substantial energy flow in the small-angle region, which is additional evidence for resolved photon processes. We present the transverse momentum dependence of the inclusive jet and two-jet cross sections and compare them with different model predictions.
