Experimental Study of Inclusive Muon Spectra at PETRA

The results of a high-statistics study of inclusive muon spectra at PETRA are reported. Improved mass limits have been obtained for heavy quarks, heavy leptons, and charged Higgs particles. It is shown that the fragmentation properties of b quarks and c quarks are different, with the mean fragmentation variables 〈zb〉=0.75±0.03±0.06, 〈zc〉=0.46±0.02±0.05 and the average semileptonic branching ratio for the B and C hadrons R(B)=(10.5±1.5±1.3)%, R(C)=(11.5±1.0±1.7)%.

A Model Independent Second Order Determination of the Strong Coupling Constant $\alpha^- s$

With use of the MARK-J detector at s=34.7 GeV 21 000 e+e−→hadron events have been collected. By measurement of the asymmetry in angular energy correlations the strong coupling constant αs=0.13±0.01 (statistical)±0.02 (systematic) is determined, in complete second order, and independent of the fragmentation models and QCD cutoff values used.

MEASUREMENT OF THE XI- P ELASTIC CROSS-SECTION AT 102-GEV/C AND 135-GEV/C

TheΞ-p differential elastic cross section has been measured in the SPS hyperon beam at 102 and 135 GeV/c. In the range 0.01<−<0.42(GeV/c)2, thet distributions are found to be compatible with the formA exp(Bt) whereB is 7.7±0.4(GeV/c)−2 at 102 GeV/c and 8.2 ±0.5(GeV/c)−2 at 135 GeV/c. The corresponding total elastic cross sections areσel=4.9±0.7 mb andσel=5.6±0.9 mb, respectively. These results are compared with the predictions of phenomenological models.

EXISTENCE OF XI RESONANCES ABOVE 2-GEV

Ξ*− production was studied in the reaction K−+p→K+slow+X− at 5 GeV/c. The slow K+ was electronically detected, while the X− was observed as a missing mass, thus allowing for observation of all Ξ* independent of decay mode. The observed Ξ states were Ξ(1320), Ξ(1530), Ξ(1820), Ξ(2030), Ξ(2250), Ξ(2370), and Ξ(2500). These data establish and confirm the existence of Ξ(2250) and indicate a peculiar production-cross-section behavior for the Ξ*(2370).

We have studied the reactionspp→ppπ+π-,K+p→K+pπ+π−π, π+p→ π+,pπ+π− and π−p →π+π− at 147 GeV/c using the 30-inch Fermilab hybrid system. All four reactions were detected with the same apparatus and analyzed in the same way. The energy dependence of the channel cross section was found to beAp−0.6+B for thepp reaction andAp−1+B for the other three. About 90% of the cross section at 147 GeV/c can be accounted for by either beam or target diffraction. Some of the remaining cross section may come from double Pomeron exchange reactions which we tried to isolate. We have tested the hypothesis of a factorizable Pomeron and our data indicates a violation of this hypothesis. We show that the 3π mass enhancement in the mass region 1.2–1.4 GeV is diffractively produced in the π± beam reactions. Fourprong, four-constraint and six-prong, four-constraint cross sections are reported.

Search for Top Quark and a Test of Models Without Top Quark at the Highest {PETRA} Energies

With a PETRA energy scan in ≤30-MeV steps, the continuum production of open top quark up to 38.54 GeV is excluded. Over regions of energy scan from 29.90 to 38.63 GeV limits are set on the product of hadronic branching ratio and electronic width BhΓee for toponium to be less than 2.0 keV at the 95% confidence level. By a search for flavor-changing neutral currents in b decay, models without a top quark are excluded.

Energy and Quantum Number Flow in $K^+ p$ and $\pi^+ p$ Interactions at 32-{GeV}/$c$ and 70-{GeV}/$c$

Energy, charge and strangeness flow inK+p interactions at 32 and 70 GeV/c, and π+p interactions at 32 GeV/c are studied in terms of the angular variable λ=|x|/pT. The data ondQ/dλ anddE/dλ show only a weak indication of scale breaking between 32 and 70 GeV/c. For inclusive “non-diffractive”, inclusive “diffractive” and exclusive “non-diffractive” jets, the fraction of charge in any angular region ΔΩ away from the central region is found to be proportional to the energy fraction in the same interval. The data ondQ/dE versus λ are compatible with some versions of dual-sheet models and agree also with the LUND Monte-Carlo model. The data are also compared with\(v(\bar v)p\) interactions in BEBC. In exclusive channels the average ratiodQ/dS=0.78±0.04 is consistent, in the framework of fragmentation models, with a larger probability for the fragmentation of the\(\bar s\)-valence quark than theu-valence quark in theK+-meson.

Inclusive $\phi$ Production in $K^+ p$ Interactions at 70-{GeV}/$c$

We present results on inclusive φ meson production in K + p interactions at 70 GeV/ c in the kaon fragmentation x >0.2 region. Comparison with other data on φ meson production in K ± and p induced reactions provides evidence that the strange valence-quark fragmentation or recombination processes play the dominant role in the K ± → φ transitions. Arguments are presented that the kaon valence strange s -quark carries a much higher momentum fraction than the u-quark. Evidence for the previously observed narrow φπ + state at mass ∼2.1 GeV is discussed.
