The formation of the η ′ in the reaction e + e − →e + e − η ′→e + e − π + π − γ has been measured by the L3 detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 91 GeV . The radiative width of the η ′ has been found to be Γ γγ =4.17±0.10 (stat.) ±0.27 (sys.) keV . The Q 2 dependence of the η ′ formation cross section has been measured for Q 2 ≤10 GeV 2 and the η ′ electromagnetic transition form factor has been determined. The form factor can be parametrised by a pole form with Λ=0.900±0.046 (stat.) ±0.022 (sys.) GeV . It is also consistent with recent non-perturbative QCD calculations.

Charged particle multiplicity in e+ e- --> q anti-q events at 161-GeV and 172-GeV and from the decay of the W boson.

Inspire Record 449290 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47398

The data collected by DELPHI in 1996 have been used to measure the average charged particle multiplicities and dispersions in q q ̄ events at centre-of-mass energies of s =161 GeV and s =172 GeV, and the average charge multiplicity in WW events at s =172 GeV. The multiplicities in q q ̄ events are consistent with the evolution predicted by QCD. The dispersions in the multiplicity distributions are consistent with Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling. The average multiplicity of charged particles in hadronic W decays has been measured for the first time; its value, 19.23±0.74(stat+syst), is consistent with that expected for an e + e − interaction at a centre-of-mass energy equal to the W mass. The charged particle multiplicity in W decays shows no evidence of effects of colour reconnection between partons from different W's at the present level of statistics.

Inspire Record 446031 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47203

Using the CLEO~II detector, we have measured the differential cross sections for exclusive two-photon production of light pseudoscalar mesons $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$. From our measurements we have obtained the form factors associated with the electromagnetic transitions $\gamma^*\gamma$ $\to$ meson. We have measured these form factors in the momentum transfer ranges from 1.5 to 9, 20, and 30 GeV$^2$ for $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$, respectively, and have made comparisons to various theoretical predictions.

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have made a measurement of R=sigma(e+e- ->hadrons)/sigma(e+e- ->mu+mu-) =3.56+/-0.01+/-0.07 at ECM=10.52 GeV. This implies a value for the strong coupling constant of alpha_s(10.52 GeV)=0.20+/-0.01+/-0.06, or alpha_s(M_Z)=0.13+/-0.005+/-0.03.

Single and multi-photon events with missing energy in e+ e- collisions at 161-GeV < s**(1/2) < 172-GeV.

A search for single and multi-photon events with missing energy is performed using data collected at centre-of-mass energies between 161 GeV and 172 GeV for a total of 20.9 pb −1 of integrated luminosity. The results obtained are used to derive the value for the ν ν γ(γ) cross section as well as upper limits on new physics processes.

We have studied the process e + e − → n γ (n ≥ 2) at centre-of-mass energies of 161.3 GeV and 172.1 GeV. The analysis is based on a sample of events collected by the L3 detector in 1996 corresponding to total integrated luminosities of 10.7 pb −1 and 10.1 pb −1 respectively. The observed rates of events with two and more photons and the characteristic distributions are in good agreement with the Standard Model expectations. This is used to set lower limits on contact interaction energy scale parameters, on the QED cut-off parameters and on the mass of excited electrons.

Measurement of the B hadron energy distribution in Z0 decays.

Inspire Record 445191 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.22273

We have measured the B hadron energy distribution in Z0 decays using a sample of semi-leptonic B decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. The energy of each tagged B hadron was reconstructed using information from the lepton and a partially reconstructed charm-decay vertex. We compared the scaled energy distribution with several models of heavy quark fragmentation. The average scaled energy of primary B hadrons was found to be <x_E_B> = 0.716 +- 0.011 (stat.) +0.022 -0.021 (syst.).

We have studied the structure of hadronic events with a hard, isolated photon in the final state (e + e − → Z → hadrons + γ) in the 3.6 million hadronic events collected with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies around 91 GeV. The centre-of-mass energy of the hadronic system is in the range 30 GeV to 86 GeV. Event shape variables have been measured at these reduced centre-of-mass energies and have been compared with the predictions of different QCD Monte Carlo programs. The event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are well reproduced by QCD models. We fit distributions of several global event shape variables to resummed O (α s 2 ) calculations to determine the strong coupling constant α s over a wide range of energies. We find that the strong coupling constant α s decreases with increasing energy, as expected from QCD.

Measurement of W pair cross-sections in e+ e- interactions at s**(1/2) = 172-GeV and W decay branching fractions

The L3 collaboration Acciarri, M. ; Adriani, O. ; Aguilar-Benitez, M. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 407 (1997) 419-431, 1997.
Inspire Record 445324 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47464

We report on the measurement of W-boson pair-production with the L3 detector at LEP at an average centre-of-mass energy of 172.13 GeV. In a data sample corresponding to a total luminosity of 10.25 pb −1 we select 110 four-fermion events with pairs of hadronic jets or leptons with high invariant masses. Branching fractions of W decays into different fermion-antifermion pairs are determined with and without the assumption of charged-current lepton universality. The branching fraction for hadronic W decays is measured to be: B (W → hadrons) = 64.2 −3.8 +3.7 (stat.) ± 0.5 (syst.) %. Combining all final states the total cross section for W-pair production is measured to be: σ WW = 12.27 −1.32 +1.41 (stat.) ± 0.23 (syst.) pb. The results are in good agreement with the Standard Model.

Production of neutron-rich nuclides and radioactive beams by intermediate energy $^{238}$U fission

The yields of neutron-rich fission fragments from the interaction of 20 MeV/nucleon 238U with 208Pb have been measured. The production mechanism of these fragments is consistent with sequential fission following a quasielastic or deep inelastic collision. Substantial yields of very n-rich fragments are observed. The importance of these data for generation of n-rich radioactive beams by fission of intermediate-energy projectiles is discussed.

To obtain production cross section the observed counts were corrected for the yields of charge states missed by the focal plane detectors (due to charge changing of the ions passing through the counter at the first image of the fragment separator). The counts are tabulated as a comment.
