We study the multiplicity distribution of charged particles produced in 28-GeV/c pd interactions in the BNL 80-inch deuterium bubble chamber. We find that (18.3 ± 2.9)% of the three- and more-prong pd events result from double scattering in deuterium, a fraction observed to be constant from 28-to-400-GeV/c incident momentum. We extract pn topological cross sections from the odd-prong pd data by correcting for the effects of spectator visibility, double scattering, and Glauber screening. We find the dispersion of 28-to-400-GeV/c pd multiplicity distributions to have the same linear dependence on the mean multiplicity as found for pp data, while the pn data exhibit a different dependence. Both the pd and pn multiplicity distributions at 28 GeV/c are observed to be inconsistent with Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling.

Precision Measurement of Proton Proton Total Cross-section at the {CERN} Intersecting Storage Rings

Amaldi, U. ; Cocconi, G. ; Diddens, A.N. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 145 (1978) 367-401, 1978.
Inspire Record 131412 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.34944

The measurement of the proton-proton total cross section performed by the CERN-Pisa-Rome-Stony Brook Collaboration at the CERN ISR is discussed in detail. The total interaction rate, the elastic scattering rate in the forward direction, and the machine luminosity were measured simultaneously to obtain three different determinations of the total cross section. Consistent results were found, which made it possible to prove the reliability of the Van der Meer luminosity calibration within +-0.9% and to achieve a precision of +-0.6% in the measurement of the total cross section.

Analysis of Nucleon Structure Functions in CERN Bubble Chamber Neutrino Experiments

We present results for the differential cross sections of neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in the energy range E = 2−200 GeV, from the BEBC and Gargamelle experiments. The structure functions F 2 , 2 χF 1 and χF 3 have been evaluated as a function of χ and q 2 . Deviations are observed from Bjorken scaling, which are very similar to those found in electron and muon inelastic scattering. For the Callan-Gross ratio, we find 2χF 1 F 2 = 0.80 ± 0.12 and the corresponding value for 〈R〉 = 〈 σ S σ T 〉 = 0.15 ± 0.10 . Our results are consistent with the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rule; we measure ⩾2.5 ± 0.5 valence quarks per nucleon. Quark and antiquark distributions are given. The Nachtmann moments of F 2 and χF 3 are quantitatively consistent with the predictions from QCD. The value of the strong interaction parameter is λ = 0.74 ± 0.05 GeV without corrections, and 0.66 ± 0.05 GeV including α S 2 corrections. The moments of the gluon distribution are found to be positive and indicate an χ distribution of gluons which is comparable with that of the valence quarks.

Production of Multi - Pion Systems With Large Longitudinal Momentum at the {CERN} {ISR}

Inclusive cross sections are presented for 2π and 3π systems with large longitudinal x at the highest intersecting storage ring energies (s=53 GeV for 2π; s=53 and 62 GeV for 3π). The ratio π+π−π−π− rises sharply with increasing x similar to the ratio K+K−, as expected in a quark-model interpretation.

Confirmation of Exchange Degeneracy Predictions in the Line Reversed Reactions: $\pi^+ p \to K^+ Y^*(1385)$ and $K^- p \to \pi^- Y^*(1385)$ at 11.6-{GeV}/$c$

Inspire Record 130550 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20815

We have measured in a single experimental setup the differential cross sections and polarizations of the Y*(1385) produced in the two line-reversed reactions π+p→K+Y*(1385) (260 eV/μb) and K−p→π−Y*(1385) (180 eV/μb) at 11.5 GeV/c. We compare these results to Σ+ production in the same experiment. The data have been derived from a triggered bubble-chamber experiment using the SLAC Hybrid Facility. We find that both helicity-flip-dominated (Y*) and helicity-nonflip-dominated (Σ) processes are consistent with weak-exchange-degeneracy predictions.

Inclusive Negative Hadron Production from High Energy $\bar{\nu}$ Nucleus Charged Current Interactions

Berge, J.P. ; Bogert, D. ; Endorf, R. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 18 (1978) 3905, 1978.
Inspire Record 130082 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24370

We present data on inclusive negative-hadron production from charged-current antineutrino interactions in a 21% Ne-H mixture. Inclusive single-particle distributions are presented and are shown to be insensitive to the momentum transferred to the hadron vertex. Comparisons made to inclusive data from π−p and π−n interactions indicate a close similarity between the hadrons resulting from π-nucleon and ν¯-nucleus interactions. The general features of the ν¯-nucleus data are found to be similar to those seen in ν¯p interactions. This last observation implies that ν¯p and ν¯n interactions are similar and that nuclear effects are small.

A Study of the Reactions $K^0_L p \to K^0_S p$, $\Lambda \pi^+$, $\Sigma^0 \pi^+$ and $\Lambda \pi^+ \pi^0$ Near 550-{MeV}/$c$

Inspire Record 6591 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24324

We present measurements of the differential and polarization cross sections for the reactions KL0p→Ks0p, Λπ+, Σ0π+, and Λπ+π0 made in a hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to a beam of KL0 with incident momentum 550±35 MeV/c. The quasielastic data imposes additional constraints on the partial-wave analyses of the KN and K¯N systems. Our data show no strong energy-dependent effects in the region of the reported Σ(1580), JP=32− state. The phase of the forward regeneration amplitude was found to be about - 160° independent of KL0 momentum.

SPIN - PARITY ANALYSIS OF THE (p pi+ pi-) SYSTEM IN THE REACTION K- p ---> K- pi- pi+ p AT 10-GeV/c, 14.3-GeV/c AND 16-GeV/c

Inspire Record 6590 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.42920

A partial-wave analysis of the diffractively produced p π + π − system has been performed for the reaction K − p→K − (p π + π − ) at 10, 14.3 and 16 GeV/ c using the isobar model. For p π + π − masses below 1.6 GeV, the system can be described by the states with spin-parity 1 2 + and 3 2 − . The dominant state is the 3 2 − S-wave Δπ . No evidence for resonance production can be found here. For higher masses, the states 5 2 + and 5 2 − are present in addition. The 5 2 − constitutes a violation of the Gribov-Morrison rule and its mass shape is consistent with being the D 15 N ∗ (1670) resonance. The peak in the p π + π − mass spectrum at 1.7 GeV cannot be explained by one single spin-parity state. A comparison of the diffractive reaction pomeron + p → p ππ with the formation experiment π p → N ππ is made.

Inclusive Electron Production in Multiprong Events Produced by $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation

Feller, J.M. ; Litke, A. ; Madaras, R. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 40 (1978) 1677, 1978.

We have measured inclusive electron production in multiprong events produced by e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy range 3.9-7.4 GeV. We find the electron momentum spectra are consistent with the electrons coming mainly from decays of charmed particles, with a smaller contribution from decays of the τ lepton. From our data we calculate the average branching ratio for charmed particles to decay into an electron plus additional particles to be (8.2±1.9)%.
