After completion of the data taking for the νμ→ντ oscillation search, the CHORUS lead–scintillator calorimeter was used in the 1998 run as an active target. High-statistics samples of charged-current interactions were collected in the CERN SPS west area neutrino beam. This beam contained predominantly muon (anti-)neutrinos from sign-selected pions and kaons. We measure the flux and energy spectrum of the incident neutrinos and compare them with beam simulations. The neutrino–nucleon and anti-neutrino–nucleon differential cross-sections are measured in the range 0.01<x<0.7 , 0.05<y<0.95 , 10<Eν<200 GeV . We extract the neutrino–nucleon structure functions F2(x,Q2) , xF3(x,Q2) , and R(x,Q2) and compare these with results from other experiments.

A measurement of Λ c + production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a subsample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector, exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in Λ c + to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of 27 GeV, the product σ (Λ c + )/ σ (CC)× BR (Λ c + →3 p ) was measured to be (0.37±0.10(stat)±0.02(syst))×10 −2 , while the values of (1.54±0.35(stat)±0.18(syst))×10 −2 and of 0.24±0.07(stat)±0.04(syst) were obtained for σ (Λ c + )/ σ (CC) and BR (Λ c + →3 p ), respectively.

We have measured the spin structure functions g2p and g2d and the virtual photon asymmetries A2p and A2d over the kinematic range 0.02 < x < 0.8 and 1.0 < Q^2 < 30(GeV/c)^2 by scattering 38.8 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from transversely polarized NH3 and 6LiD targets. The absolute value of A2 is significantly smaller than the sqrt{R} positivity limit over the measured range, while g2 is consistent with the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek calculation. We obtain results for the twist-3 reduced matrix elements d2p, d2d and d2n. The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule integral - int(g2(x)dx) is reported for the range 0.02 < x < 0.8.

We have measured the neutron structure function g$_{2}^{n}$ and the virtual photon-nucleon asymmetry A$_{2}^{n}$ over the kinematic range $0.014\leq x \leq 0.7$ and $1.0 \leq Q^{2} \leq 17.0$ by scattering 48.3 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized $^{3}$He. Results for A$_{2}^{n}$ are significantly smaller than the $\sqrt{R}$ positivity limit over most of the measured range and data for g$_2^{n}$ are generally consistent with the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek prediction. Using our measured g$_{2}^{n}$ we obtain results for the twist-3 reduced matrix element $d_{2}^{n}$, and the integral $\int$g$_{2}^{n}(x)dx$ in the range $0.014\leq x \leq 1.0$. Data from this experiment are combined with existing data for g$_{2}^{n}$ to obtain an average for $d_{2}^{n}$ and the integral $\int$g$_{2}^{n}(x)dx$.

We report on a precision measurement of the neutron spin structure function $g^n_1$ using deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by polarized ^3He. For the kinematic range 0.014<x<0.7 and 1 (GeV/c)^2< Q^2< 17 (GeV/c)^2, we obtain $\int^{0.7}_{0.014} g^n_1(x)dx = -0.036 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.005 (syst)$ at an average $Q^2=5 (GeV/c)^2$. We find relatively large negative values for $g^n_1$ at low $x$. The results call into question the usual Regge theory method for extrapolating to x=0 to find the full neutron integral $\int^1_0 g^n_1(x)dx$, needed for testing quark-parton model and QCD sum rules.

The $Q~{2}$ dependence and the total cross sections for charged and neutral current processes are measured in $e~{\pm}p$ reactions for transverse momenta of the outgoing lepton larger than 25 GeV. Comparable size of cross sections for the neutral current process and for the weak charged current process are observed above $Q~2\approx5000$GeV$~2$. Using the shape and magnitude of the charged current cross section we determine a propagator mass of $m_{W} = 84\ ~{+10}_{-7}$ GeV.

The ratio g1/F1 has been measured over the range 0.03<x<0.6 and 0.3<Q2<10 (GeV/c)2 using deep-inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized protons and deuterons. We find g1/F1 to be consistent with no Q2-dependence at fixed x in the deep-inelastic region Q~2>1 (GeV/c)2. A trend is observed for g1/F1 to decrease at lower Q2. Fits to world data with and without a possible Q2-dependence in g1/F1 are in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule, but Delta_q is substantially less than the quark-parton model expectation.

We have measured proton and deuteron virtual photon-nucleon asymmetries A2p and A2d and structure functions g2p and g2d over the range 0.03<x<0.8 and 1.3<Q2<10 (GeV/c)2 by inelastically scattering polarized electrons off polarized ammonia targets. Results for A2 are significantly smaller than the positivity limit sqrt(R) for both targets. Within experimental precision, the g2 data are well-described by the twist-2 contribution g2WW. Twist-3 matrix elements have been extracted and are compared to theorectical predictions.

Cross sections for deep-inelastic electron scattering from liquid deuterium, gaseous He4, and solid Be, C, Al, Ca, Fe, Ag, and Au targets were measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center using electrons with energies ranging from 8 to 24.5 GeV. These data cover a range in the Bjorken variable x from 0.089 to 0.8, and in momentum transfer Q2 from 2 to 15 (GeV/c)2. The ratios of cross sections per nucleon (σAσd)is for isoscalar nuclei have been extracted from the data. These ratios are greater than unity in the range 0.1<x<0.3, while for 0.3<x<0.8 they are less than unity and decrease logarithmically with atomic weight A, or linearly with average nuclear density. No Q2 dependence in the ratios was observed over the kinematic range of the data. These results are compared to various theoretical predictions.

The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber has been exposed to a quadrupole triplet neutrino beam produced at the Tevatron. The ratio of ν to ν¯ in the beam is approximately 2.5. The mean event energy for ν-induced charged-current events is 150 GeV, and for ν¯-induced charged-current events it is 110 GeV. A total of 64 dimuon candidates (1 μ+μ+, 52 μ−μ+ and μ+μ−, and 11 μ−μ−) is observed in the data sample of approximately 13 300 charged-current events. The number and properties of the μ−μ− and μ+μ+ candidates are consistent with their being produced by background processes, the important sources being π and K decay and punchthrough. The 90%-C.L. upper limit for μ−μ−/μ− for muon momenta above 4 GeV/c is 1.2×10−3, and for momenta above 9 GeV/c this limit is 1.1×10−3. The opposite-sign-dimuon–to–single-muon ratio is (0.62±0.13)% for muon momenta above 4 GeV/c. There are eight neutral strange particles in the opposite-sign sample, leading to a rate per dimuon event of 0.65±0.29. The opposite-sign-dimuon sample is consistent with the hypothesis of charm production and decay.
