Neutron yields from 435 MeV/nucleon Nb stopping in Nb and 272 MeV/nucleon Nb stopping in Nb and Al

Neutron fluences were measured from 435 MeV/nucleon Nb ions stopping in a Nb target and 272 MeV/nucleon Nb ions stopping in targets of Nb and Al for neutrons above 20 MeV and at laboratory angles between 3° and 80°. The resultant spectra were integrated over angles to produce neutron energy distributions and over energy to produce neutron angular distributions. The total neutron yields for each system were obtained by integrating over the angular distributions. The angular distributions from all three systems are peaked forward, and the energy distributions from all three systems show an appreciable yield of neutrons with velocities greater than the beam velocity. Comparison of the total neutron yields from the two Nb+Nb systems suggests that the average neutron multiplicity decreases with decreasing projectile energy. Comparison of the total yields from the two 272 MeV/nucleon systems suggests that the total yields show the same dependence on projectile and target mass number as do total inclusive neutron cross sections. The data are compared with Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck model calculations.

Evidence for Narrow States Decaying Into ($\Lambda \bar{p}$ Pions) at 3.1-{GeV}/$c^2$ With Charges +1, 0 and -1

Evidence for narrow states produced by Σ − interactions in beryllium, and decaying into ( Λ p + pions ), has been obtained in an experiment at the CERN SPS hyperon beam. At 3.1 GeV/ c 2 , the ( Λ p π + π + ), ( Λ p π + π + π − ) and ( Λ p π + π − ) effective mass distributions show an excess of 45, 19 and 62 events above a background of 50, 28 and 187, respectively. The possibility that these three signals are statistical fluctuations is remote. The observed widths of the signals are compatible with the mass resolution of the apparatus, 24 MeV/ c 2 FWHM. We have not been able to find an interpretation of the quantum numbers of the final states, which are baryon number 0, strangeness −1 and charge +1, 0 and −1.

Test of S Channel Helicity Conservation in Inelastic $\rho^0$ Diffraction in 20-{GeV} Photoproduction

The reaction γp→ρfast0pπ+π− has been studied with the linearly polarized 20-GeV monochromatic photon beam at the SLAC Hybrid Facility to test the prediction of s-channel helicity conservation in inelastic diffraction for t’<0.4 (GeV/c)2. In a sample of 1934 events from this reaction, the ρ0 decay-angular distributions and spin-density-matrix elements are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation, the π+π− mass shape displays the same skewing as seen in the reaction γp→pπ+π−, and the pπ+π− mass distribution compares well and scales according to the vector dominance model with that produced in π±p→πfast±pπ+π−.

We have observed the π+π− decay of the ρ′(1600) in the production reaction γp→ρ′p at 20 GeV. Using a calculation which takes into account the interference of the ρ′ with the ρ(770) and a Drell background, we find good evidence that this resonance is a radial excitation of the ρ(770). The background interference strongly distorts the angular distributions predicted by a purely s-channel helicity-conserving production mechanism. We measure m0=(1.55±0.07) GeV/c2 and Γ0=(0.28−0.08+0.03) GeV/c2.

MEASUREMENT OF THE XI- P ELASTIC CROSS-SECTION AT 102-GEV/C AND 135-GEV/C

TheΞ-p differential elastic cross section has been measured in the SPS hyperon beam at 102 and 135 GeV/c. In the range 0.01<−<0.42(GeV/c)2, thet distributions are found to be compatible with the formA exp(Bt) whereB is 7.7±0.4(GeV/c)−2 at 102 GeV/c and 8.2 ±0.5(GeV/c)−2 at 135 GeV/c. The corresponding total elastic cross sections areσel=4.9±0.7 mb andσel=5.6±0.9 mb, respectively. These results are compared with the predictions of phenomenological models.

THE REACTIONS P P ---> P P PI+ PI-, K+ P ---> K+ P PI+ PI-, PI+ P ---> PI+ P PI+ PI- AND PI- P ---> PI- P PI+ PI- AT 147-GeV/c

We have studied the reactionspp→ppπ+π-,K+p→K+pπ+π−π, π+p→ π+,pπ+π− and π−p →π+π− at 147 GeV/c using the 30-inch Fermilab hybrid system. All four reactions were detected with the same apparatus and analyzed in the same way. The energy dependence of the channel cross section was found to beAp−0.6+B for thepp reaction andAp−1+B for the other three. About 90% of the cross section at 147 GeV/c can be accounted for by either beam or target diffraction. Some of the remaining cross section may come from double Pomeron exchange reactions which we tried to isolate. We have tested the hypothesis of a factorizable Pomeron and our data indicates a violation of this hypothesis. We show that the 3π mass enhancement in the mass region 1.2–1.4 GeV is diffractively produced in the π± beam reactions. Fourprong, four-constraint and six-prong, four-constraint cross sections are reported.

Topological, Total and Elastic Cross-sections for $K^+ p$, $\pi^+ p$ and $p p$ Interactions at 147-{GeV}/$c$

The Fermilab hybrid 30-in. bubble-chamber spectrometer was exposed to a tagged 147-GeV/c positive beam containing π+, K+, and p. A sample of 3003 K+p, 19410 pp, and 20745 π+p interactions is used to derive σn, 〈n〉, f2cc, and 〈nc〉D for each beam particle. These values are compared to values obtained at other, mostly lower, beam momenta. The overall dependence of 〈n〉 on Ea, the available center-of-mass energy, for these three reactions as well as π−p and pp interactions has been determined.

ELASTIC SCATTERING AND PARTICLE PRODUCTION IN TWO PRONG PI- P INTERACTIONS AT 8-GEV/C

Results of a high-statistics study of elastic scattering and meson resonances produced by π−p interactions at 8 GeV/c are presented. Large statistics and small systematic errors permit examination of the complete kinematic region. Total differential cross sections are given for ρ0,−, f0, g0,−, Δ±, Δ0, and N* resonances. Spin-density matrix elements and Legendre-polynomial moments are given for ρ, f, and Δ resonances. The results for ρ0 and f0 resonances are compared with the predictions of a Regge-pole-exchange model. Properties of the above resonances are compared and discussed. In particular, we present evidence that the ρ0 and f0 production mechanisms are similar. The similarity of the g0 t distribution to that of the ρ0 and f0 suggests a common production mechanism for all three resonances.

Results from a high-statistics experiment involving an exposure of the SLAC 82-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a beam of 8-GeV/c π− yielding a final state of π−π+π−p are presented. Copious production of ρ, Δ++, and f is found. Considerable quasi-two-body production in which one particle decays to one of the above resonances is also observed. Some double-resonance production involving baryon and meson resonances is also seen. The production properties of ρ, Δ++, and f mesons are well described by a double-Regge model.
