The recoil proton polarization for γ n → π − p was measured around the third resonance region. Both momentum vectors of the proton and the pion were determined by the magnetic spectrometers. The proton polarization was measured by means of proton-carbon scattering in the polarization analyzer located behind the proton spectrometer. Below 900 MeV incident photon energy, our data are consistent with the other existing experimental data ( θ π ∗ = 90° ) and the predictions of partial-wave analyses. Above 1000 MeV, however, a large discrepancy was observed between our data and the predictions of the partial-wave analyses. The discrepancy stands out as the pion c.m. angle increases. A new partial-wave analysis was made for γ n → π − p including our polarization data, and the accuracy of the experimentally determined electromagnetic coupling constant of the third resonances were greatly improved. In particular, a finite amount of the helicity 3 2 amplitude for the γ n → F 15 (1688) resonance was obtained against the predictions of the quark models, by Copley, Karl and Obryk and by Feynman, Kislinger and Ravendal but in agreement with the relativistic quark models of Sugimoto and Toya, and Kubota and Ohta.

Results of two spark chamber experiments on A 2 − production in the reaction π − p → K − K S 0 (→ π + π − )p at 9.8 and 18.8 GeV are presented. Decay angular distributions and differential cross sections are given, and the energy dependence of the cross section σ [ π − p → A 2 − (→ K − K 0 )p] is compared with results from π − p → A 2 − (→ 3 π )p.

We have measured inclusive γ and π0 production in multiprong events produced by e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy range 4.9 to 7.4 GeV. We find the π0 inclusive cross section to be consistent in shape and normalization with half the charged-π cross section between x=0.15 and 0.60, with an integrated inclusive cross-section ratio of σ(π0)|σ(π+)+σ(π−)|=0.47±0.10.

We have searched the missing-mass spectrum of the reaction pp→K+K+X for a narrow six-quark resonance in the mass range 2.0-2.5 GeV/c2. No narrow structure was observed. Upper limits for the production cross section of such a state depend upon mass and vary from 30 to 130 nb.

We present proton-nucleus dimuon-production cross sections for masses between 4 and 15 GeV, center-of-mass rapidities between -0.23 and 0.6 and incident energies of 200, 300, and 400 GeV. The data confirm scaling to the 20% level. The dependence of continuum 〈pT〉 on beam energy is also presented.

Precision Measurement of Proton Proton Total Cross-section at the {CERN} Intersecting Storage Rings

Amaldi, U. ; Cocconi, G. ; Diddens, A.N. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 145 (1978) 367-401, 1978.
Inspire Record 131412 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.34944

The measurement of the proton-proton total cross section performed by the CERN-Pisa-Rome-Stony Brook Collaboration at the CERN ISR is discussed in detail. The total interaction rate, the elastic scattering rate in the forward direction, and the machine luminosity were measured simultaneously to obtain three different determinations of the total cross section. Consistent results were found, which made it possible to prove the reliability of the Van der Meer luminosity calibration within +-0.9% and to achieve a precision of +-0.6% in the measurement of the total cross section.

Analysis of Nucleon Structure Functions in CERN Bubble Chamber Neutrino Experiments

Nucl.Phys.B 142 (1978) 1-28, 1978.
Inspire Record 6678 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35031

We present results for the differential cross sections of neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in the energy range E = 2−200 GeV, from the BEBC and Gargamelle experiments. The structure functions F 2 , 2 χF 1 and χF 3 have been evaluated as a function of χ and q 2 . Deviations are observed from Bjorken scaling, which are very similar to those found in electron and muon inelastic scattering. For the Callan-Gross ratio, we find 2χF 1 F 2 = 0.80 ± 0.12 and the corresponding value for 〈R〉 = 〈 σ S σ T 〉 = 0.15 ± 0.10 . Our results are consistent with the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rule; we measure ⩾2.5 ± 0.5 valence quarks per nucleon. Quark and antiquark distributions are given. The Nachtmann moments of F 2 and χF 3 are quantitatively consistent with the predictions from QCD. The value of the strong interaction parameter is λ = 0.74 ± 0.05 GeV without corrections, and 0.66 ± 0.05 GeV including α S 2 corrections. The moments of the gluon distribution are found to be positive and indicate an χ distribution of gluons which is comparable with that of the valence quarks.

Inclusive and semi-inclusive distributions of γ's and π 0 's in the reactions K + p → γ + X and K + p → π 0 + X at 32 GeV/ c are presented and discussed. When compared to the inclusive π − production, the π 0 cross section is found to be significantly higher in low | x | and p T regions. The data are compared with other experiments and quark fusion model predictions.

Observation of a Narrow Resonance at 9.46-GeV in electron-Positron Annihilations

Darden, C.W. ; Hasemann, H. ; Krolzig, A. ; et al.

Inspire Record 130052 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.27447

We observe a narrow resonance in the reaction e + e − → hadrons using the DASP detector at the DORIS storage ring. The mass is found to be (9.46 ± 0.01) GeV and the observed width is compatible with the storage ring resolution of ±8 MeV. The energy-integrated cross section results in an electronic width Γ ee = (1.3 ± 0.4) keV.
